STADIUM INFORMATION AND BACKGROUND FROM DREAM TO CONCEPTION The Galpharm Stadium has been the home of Huddersfield Town since 1994/1995 and is a state of the art facility. It has a capacity of just under 25,000 and is a shrine to modern British architecture. For the first ever home game there was initially only the two touch-line stands open, but the 'away' stand soon followed (December 1994) and in 1998 the Panasonic Stand (from April 2008 the Fantastic Media Stand) was 'born' to create the Galpharm Stadium has it stands today. Standing in what was former disused council land, nothing more than waste ground, the Galpharm Stadium is a "truly special place". The Galpharm Stadium's modern blue and white architecture stands against a backdrop of green, as the stadium appears to rise from the trees. The stadium was one of the first within the UK to feature a concave roof which slopes towards the pitch the curve giving the unique stadium a striking aesthetically and marketable quality as well as character and definition. It was once said about the stadium: "Its McAlpine in name Alpine by nature" - referring to the first name of the stadium, and another commentator has also referred it as a "spacecraft" due to its futuristic and talented appearance. The design of the stadium giving no seat any obstructions to the view of the playing surface. The dream of the stadium began in November 1991 when Huddersfield Town, Huddersfield Rugby League and Kirklees Council came together to begin building the dream, that today in reality is the Galpharm Stadium. In 1995 the Royal Institute of British Architects awarded the stadium the Building of the year, and many new stadiums have been attracted to the Galpharm design/concept including Bolton Wanderers Reebok Stadium and the Sydney Stadium Australia (now the Telstra Stadium) the home of the 2000 Olympic Games. The Galpharm Stadium was opened for the 1994/1995 season and cost around £28 million to build and as hosted many popular music concerts. Events include concerts by REM, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi and other local events and sporting matches. With the addition of a multi-purpose fourth and final stand (the Panasonic Stand) the total cost of the arena was around £40 million. The stadium has hosted Rugby League Internationals, Rugby Union International matches. It also hosted an England Under-21 match. After a period of non-activity on the popular music front, the Galpharm Stadium hosted Elton John for the first time in June 2005 and the year after during the summer of 2006 a second Bryan Adams concert. Rising through the terraced houses, the gasometer and behind a bank of green, the Stadium futuristic look, its white arches - its McAlpine by name, Alpine by nature! Huddersfield Town used to play in their former home of Leeds Road. This was where the history of Town was - the thrice championship, the FA Cup, the Dennis Law's, Frank Worthington's and so on. The spirit and legend of the famous old 'temple' was described by Alan Thompson: "Ah - Leeds Road is the Home of my dreams!" for more information about Leeds Road and the history of Huddersfield Town click here
Just how far the Galpharm Stadium can go to offer Town dreams will be assessed for years to come, the new crop of players to wear the famous blue and white will be analysed. To visit the stadium website click hereNot just a sporting arena, the Galpharm Stadium is a leisure centre and an attractive venue for any type of event in the many banqueting halls. Also on site is a 9 screen cinema (operated by Odeon Cinemas), a public house and a golf driving range with superstore. The stadium is "more than just a football stadium" with facilitates for weddings, banquets, meetings, conferences and other means of celebrations. There is also a fully equipped fitness suite and swimming pool giving everything for the health and fitness client. The Galpharm is also the home of Huddersfield's Rugby League side - the Huddersfield Giants. It is part owned by the football club, the rugby league club and the local council (Kirklees Council). Both Town's and the Giants ownership is with the combined company Sporting Pride, owned by Ken Davy - the owner of both clubs. In May 2005 the current owner of both Huddersfield Town and Huddersfield Giants announced that in order to safe guard the future of both sporting clubs and to enhance the appeal of the stadium, he had transferred both set's of shares into one company called Huddersfield Sporting Pride. In the summer of 2008 (May/June) the scoreboard was replaced with a 29-metre square multimedia video entertainment wall consisting of 28 different High Definition panels, which was positioned within the South Stand - the site of the first scoreboard. This widescreen entertainment wall will ensure that the stadium keeps in touch with the changing media world by becoming digital and will ensure the stadium remains a stadium of choice. The cost of this new addition to the stadium was £250,000. For guided tours of the stadium (for 10 persons or more) please contact 01484 484152 and ask to speak to Linda Myers. A truly special place - "There's nothing quite like the Galpharm". The Galpharm Stadium is more than just a football stadium, it is home to rugby league side Huddersfield Giants, a versatile sports, leisure and commercial/business complex in a close to major transportation routes. The stadium is widely accepted as one of the best sporting and leisure arenas in Northern England. The president of RIBA said of the Galpharm: "It demonstrates the ambition, both of the clubs and the town, not to live off old glories but to create a new building, a new landmark, a new experience". Interests of crowd safety Huddersfield Town asks all away supporters that to assure good crowd behaviour at their matches, they have to address the difficulty of persistent standing of supporters in seated areas throughout a game. Supporters are asked to respect the terms of the Galpharm Stadium sports ground licence, their own safety and that of others and remain seated throughout the game - it is an offence for any spectator to persistently stand in a seated area throughout the game. Remember that if you are attending the match as an away supporter you must use the designated away stand. For the majority of games at the Galpharm Stadium this will be the Pink Link South Stand. |
