S
eason in REVIEWThe 1999/2000 season started with great promise. New Manager Steve Bruce had brought in some experienced players and with the addition of Clyde Wijnhard up-front, Huddersfield had an exciting strike-force. It was to be that the Town front pair of Wijnhard and Marcus Stewart would become a feared force, until the sad departure of Stewart to Ipswich Town.
But as usual Town fans were left disappointed has Town delivered nothing! The Stewart transfer brought about the premature end of Town's season, as Town never recovered from his shock departure. Perhaps Stewart made Chairman Ian Ayre 'Stand and be counted', has he helped to shoot Ipswich into the Premiership, a place he wanted to go with Town.
The season started in poor fashion. Town visited the Capital sun and were inflicted a 3-1 defeat by QPR, has the Huddersfield support basked in the Loftus Road sunshine. But infront of SKY camera's Town recorded an exciting and remarkable victory over Blackburn Rovers. A stunning 7-1 victory followed over Crystal Palace (Wijnhard hat-trick), as the Town fire-power started to 'flex-its-muscles'. Town recorded 8 wins in 9 matches to rise to the top of the table. A position they would be knocked off following their first home defeat of the season by Charlton on December 28th.
Town's start was impressive and explosive, goals galore were scored, 7 against Palace, 4 against Swindon, 4 against Sheffield United, 3 against Ipswich and 3 against Nottingham Forest. But once Christmas came, Town wilted, pathetically at times!
Town's away record still very poor was complied with poor home results. Defeats at home to Portsmouth, Bolton and Stockport, paid price to the play-off hopes and promotion dreams of the Terriers.
The final game of the season at Craven Cottage, Fulham empathised Town's season. It promised so much but delivered so little. Town who had been in the top 6 since September, dropped out of the play-off places on the last day of the season as they lost 3-0.
