Clarke makes summer signing number five!

Despite rumours that defender Jamie McCombe would become signing number five of the summer, that honour has gone to Derby County winger Lee Croft.

The 25 year old winger has agreed a six month loan deal to move to Town until January 3rd offering even further competition on the wings. Croft is well known to Lee Clark having featured in the Norwich City side that Clark was assistant manager to.

A former England International Youth player Croft's pace will excite players as he looks to regain the form that he showed at Carrow Road prompting a move to Derby. He is a former Manchester City junior and has also featured on loan at Oldham before a move to Norwich for £600,000 in July 2006. Featuring in over 100 matches for the Canaries and former player of the season, he made a free transfer move last summer to County following City's relegation from the Championship and the expiration of his contract.

Clark is more than happy to have made the capture of a player he knows and likes very well and Croft himself will be hoping to regain his form having somewhat lost his way during the latter part of last season.

He is what Derby call a "flying winger" and showed excellent Second Tier form whilst at Norwich City and last season he scored once for County in 14 league starts. But he has made just one appearance for Nigel Clough's side in 2010 and the Greater Manchester born player moves north to regain the form that grabbed excellent reports whilst at Carrow Road.

Player updates - big defender on the verge of making move north!

Huddersfield Town is rumoured to be ready to open talks with commanding Bristol City defender Jamie McCombe, brother of former Terrier John, as Lee Clark looks to strengthen his squad which returned for pre-season training yesterday. Also Krystian Pearce has been offer a deal to make his January short term deal longer.

Local Bristol press is confirming that McCombe will become the first of the players to leave under new manager Steve Coppell and claim that the "surplus to requirements, long-serving centre-back is to return to his native Yorkshire after agreeing a two-year deal with League One Huddersfield Town".

McCombe who has a year to run on his Ashton Gate contract will join the Terriers later this week having passed a medical. McCombe has tasted success with City having been their player of the year for their 2006/2007 promotion season.

When confirmed by the Terriers it will become Clark's fifth summer signing. McCombe born in Pontefract has featured in over 100 games for City in a career which has seen the 27 year old take in Scunthorpe United, Halifax Town and Lincoln City. Indeed he played against Peter Jackson's side during the Nationwide League Two Play-Off semi finals in May 2004.

Released striker Tom Denton has returned to College Grove after the tall striker signed a two year deal with former club Wakefield FC. Former manager Stan Ternent bought Denton from Wakefield FC on a three contract two summers ago.

Transfer listed midfielder Michael Collins, a former Republic of Ireland Under 21 star is in talks with Scunthorpe United about making a change to the Iron.

A move confirmed today is that Academy product Joe Skarz has joined League Two side Bury. The details for the 20 year old who was transfer listed last month despite having 12 months left of his contract to run are undisclosed, but should benefit Town in the future depending on how he progresses with Bury.

Skarz who ended last season on loan at Shrewsbury Town and had some time with Hartlepool at the end of the 2008/2009 season featured in 71 starts for the Terriers scoring a single league goal. His only goal will probably be always remembered by Town fans coming seconds into the November 2008 clash at Elland Road which saw Gerry Murphy's men equalise, before a late winner from Michael Collins.

Butler leaves club

Central defender Andy Butler who spent the second half of last season on loan at Blackpool as agreed a deal with Huddersfield Town to have the remaining time on his contract paid up. Butler was under contract until next summer following the agreement of a three year term in 2008.

The defender who became former manager Stan Ternent's third signing in the summer of 2008 was an almost ever present during his first season with the club. But last season he found his game time heavily reduced following the arrival of Peter Clarke and the form of his fellow defenders that in January 2010 Lee Clark loaned him to Championship side Blackpool.

During his two year stint at the Galpharm Stadium he played in 55 matches (1 more as a sub) scoring 4 league goals during his first season.

The player would welcome a move back to Glanford Park as reported earlier this month, with the defender only leaving due to the financial incentive at Huddersfield.

Butler was just one of eight in contract Town players to be placed onto the transfer list following the Play-Off exit at Millwall last month. Of those Simon Eastwood and Tom Denton have left the club with Michael Collins, James Berrett and Joe Skarz all about to join Butler in leaving as well.

Little as been heard of the other two transfer listed players - Jim Goodwin and Lionel Ainsworth.

23/06/2010

Denton departs!

Young striker Tom Denton has become the latest player to exit the Galpharm Stadium after the club and the former Wakefield FC striker agreed a deal to end his Town career 12 months early.

Denton was signed during the summer madness of Stan Ternent when the former Huddersfield Town boss signed 10 players and another on loan before the start of the 2008/2009 season. Denton a Town fan came for an undisclosed fee in August 2008 and given a three year contract by Ternent and his management team.

Born in the Shepley area of Huddersfield and called his signing by Town as a "Dream come true", he came to the Galpharm Stadium full of promise and potential. Town beat off several clubs for the signature of Denton for a fee which many believed to be in the region of £90,000 to £100,000.

But the 6ft 7inch tall striker never really forced his way into the Town first team set up and was farmed out on loan inside three months of joining his boyhood heroes. Perhaps what didn't help Denton was that the manager who signed him left the club inside the opening 15 matches of his career, after which he was never given the opportunity of first team football.

Woking, Cheltenham and twice with former club Wakefield FC saw Denton join them on loan and he leaves Huddersfield Town having never made a first team appearance for the club.

In other news listed midfielders James Berrett and Michael Collins are attracting interest. The former Republic of Ireland players are reported to be in talks with Tranmere Rovers and Scunthorpe United respectively. Whilst defender Joe Skarz is set to join League Two side Shrewsbury Town, a side he had time on loan with last season.

Bennett agrees 12 month deal

Lee Clark confirmed his fourth summer signing, Thursday with the arrival on a free transfer of experienced goalkeeper Ian Bennett. Bennett joins the Terriers like new left back Gary Naysmith from Championship side Sheffield United.

Bennett who agreed a 12 month contract at the Galpharm Stadium and will offer back-up to first choice Alex Smithies following the exit of Simon Eastwood was out of contract following the expiry of his deal at the Blades.

Bennett was a team mate of Clark's at Newcastle United and as played for Peterborough United, Birmingham City, Coventry City, Leeds United as well as Sheffield United. The Workshop born 38 year old will offer competition as well as support to Smithies and will add even greater experienced to last season's squad.

He played 78 times for Peterborough between 1991 and 1993 before making a £325,000 move to the Blues. At St Andrews he made over 350 appearances (a number of them in the Premier League) where he enjoyed a number of promotions across a span of 12 years. Since dropping out of favour at Birmingham City he went on a number of loans before signing a permanently for Sheffield United.

Since Birmingham Bennett has been employed more in a back up role than first choice. Town manager Lee Clark told the club's official website: "I knew I would need to bring another goalkeeper in this summer and Ian fits the criteria for the position precisely."

Butler would welcome Iron return

At the start of the summer centre half Andy Butler was made available for transfer would welcome a return to Scunthorpe United. Butler joined Huddersfield Town from the Iron on a three year deal in 2008 under Stan Ternent's management regin, but following the arrival of Lee Clark the regular under Ternent as played less and less with the 26 year old loaned out to Championship side Blackpool for the second half of last season.

Butler would welcome a call from Scunthorpe United manager Nigel Adkins, who admits it was with a heavy heart that he left Glandford Park and believes that in doing so he has found that "sometimes (in football) the grass isn't always greener on the other side". He does admit in an interview with a local newspaper, that in the summer of 2008 if Scunthorpe United had matched the money on offer at the Galpharm Stadium he would have stayed with his boyhood club.

Butler joined in a wave of new arrivals during the summer of 2008 and like Butler Jim Goodwin who also joined from Scunthorpe United at the same time as Butler as been advised his name is been circulating. That means that only one of Ternent's signings (Gary Roberts) is in Clark's plans for the coming season with the rest either gone or awaiting developments. That was during a summer transfer spree which brought in 10 players.

Butler was just one of eight in contract Town players to be placed onto the transfer list following the Play-Off exit at Millwall last month. Of those Simon Eastwood has already got a new club tied up as he joined Oxford United earlier this month.

-

Stead on his way?

Huddersfield Town as said that they have had no contact with Championship side Ipswich Town about the availability of Tractor Boy striker and former Terrier Jon Stead. The striker who is now 27 years old is under contract at Portman Road and there is speculation he is to rejoin Town.

That as been squashed by Terriers boss Lee Clark who denounces at rumours that Town have enquired about his services.

Following his rise to fame at the Galpharm Stadium, he moved to Blackburn before taking in Sunderland and Sheffield United prior to joining Ipswich. He has played for England Under-21s and Derby County on loan.

Stead looked set to join Coventry City this summer having joined them on loan for the end of last season. However a change in manager looks to have ended all hopes of that. But as Lee Clark says if he was to approach any player under contract, he would speak with the club's manager first.

Stead moved from Huddersfield to Blackburn Rovers in February 2004 for £1.25 million making him the second most profitable transfer fee attained for a Terrier. He has scored 24 goals in 76 games for Peter Jackson's side.

To be fair to Stead, let's hope this rumour remains just that, as he is not the player the club requires at this time. Someone who is big, powerful and experienced (in the Kevin Phillips mould) is what Clark's forward line requires for next season.

-

Terriers to start away from home!

Although the new fixtures for the 2010/2011 League One season sponsored by nPower are not released until next week, Town will be away on August 7th due to the planned Rugby League Challenge Cup Semi-Final between Leeds Rhinos and St Helens to be hosted by the Galpharm Stadium.

Stadium Chief Ralph Rimmer says that the location and experience of the stadium of holding big matches makes it an ideal choice and stated that it is the BBC who will televise both semi-finals make the decision on the date of when the matches are played.

The Football League is said to have already had a Town request to play away from home on August 7th.

Lee Clark doubled his new signing tally in the week taking his summer signings to three with the capture of Scotland International Left Back Gary Naysmith on a two year deal. It is also Clark's second Internationally capped player in a week following the signing earlier in the week of Joey Gudjonsson and all Town's new arrivals thus far are international players.

The highly experienced 31 year old joins Clark's new look side for the 2010/2011 season on a free transfer from Sheffield United after he rejected the offer of a new contract with the South Yorkshire club. Edinburgh born Naysmith commenced his career with Hearts in 1996, and played in the Premier League with Everton for over seven years making 134 appearances. He moved to Bramall Lane in July 2007 in a £1 million deal. He suffered an injury in April 2009, but returned to action for the final two league matches of the season that as just completed.

Lee Clark who told the official site that Naysmith signing is "massive" for the club and that the Terriers worked "very hard" to achieve the signing of the left back, has real experience at the highest level of both the Scottish and English league. With 46 international caps for Scotland whilst at Hearts he was one of their finest asset helped the Tynecastle club to the Scottish Cup in 1998, the first trophy for 36 years and at the end of that season he was named the Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year. A year into his professional career with The Maroons, he had made the left back position his own.

He made 79 appearances for the Blades before deciding to join Clark's side.

His International career began in 2000 in a 2-1 Dublin victory over Republic of Ireland. he became a regular for Scotland and played 14 qualification matches in the qualification campaigns 2002, 2006, 2010 World Cup and a number of European Championships. His only goal came in Iceland in a 2-0 victory in October 2002.

It will give Lee Clark's side additional experience and more quality in a position which as been somewhat problematic in recent years for Town. At 31, Naysmith will also become the oldest member of the Terriers squad.

Easty leaves Town

Former Academy and back-up goalkeeper Simon Eastwood, who was advised at the end of the season he was to be made available for transfer, has been offered a free transfer enabling the young former England International keeper from joining Conference new boys Oxford United on a 2-year deal.

The Luton born 20-year old has signed a two year deal with the Kassam Stadium club and the former England Under-19 keeper who made just one appearance for Town - the final match of the 2008/2009, was loaned out to League Two side Bradford City and played 28 times for the Bantams.

He will become part of Chris Wilders newly promoted side who look to reestablish the club as a league side having gained Wembley promotion via the play-offs.

Eastwood leaves with best wishes from the Terriers and will battle with Bill Turley and Ryan Clarke for the GK shirt at Oxford United. Eastwood, who developed through the Town Academy was contracted with Huddersfield Town until next summer.

League One in figures

Huddersfield Town features heavily in the end of season "League One in numbers". One for the joint record of the number of home league matches lost, 22 the number of times the Terriers struck the woodwork joint with Swindon Town and 24 the fewest number of players during the season.

In addition the Football League have announced that the 2009/2010 season drew record crowds to the Coca-Cola Football League. The league enjoyed a 4.4% increase on last season to break the 17.1 million mark for the number of supporters attending Football League matches - an average of more than 10,000. That's the highest level in 50 years since the 1959/1960 campaign.

The Championship remains the fourth most watched league in Europe behind Germany's top flight, the English Premier League and Spain's La Liga. It is bigger than both the Italian and French top flight leagues. League One crowds are 75% greater than comparable league in Germany, three times the size of that in France and Italy.

As we reported on Tuesday, Town crowds this season have been the highest for some 38 years as an average of 14,893 saw Town's 23 home league matches last season. The highest 1971/1972 - when Town were in the top flight, the last time the club enjoyed such a status.

That's why Lee goes to Iceland!

Huddersfield Town today announced it's second summer signing that of centre midfielder Joey Gudjonsson (full name Jóhannes Karl Guðjónsson) on a free transfer after his contract with Burnley expired at the end of the season and he became available yesterday when the transfer window reopened.

The 30 year old left footer as been given a 2-year deal by Lee Clark, and having passed a medical yesterday he becomes the first ever Iceland born player to join the Town.

He has a reputation for being quality within the middle and comes with the experience of playing at the top level across Europe as well as the top two tiers of English football. Like fellow summer capture Scott Arfield, Gudjonsson is a box to box high energy player who can score goals. His quality in that respect is evident when Spanish club Real Betis paid £3.5 million for him in 2001.

Not only has he played at the highest level in domestic football, he has also been capped 34 times for his country scoring once. He has made a number of appearances in qualification matches for both the World Cup and European Championship.

Lee Clark said he was delighted with the quality he has brought in and will be looking to add another name to the centre midfield position in due course. The manager is pleased with the backing he is getting from Chairman Dean Hoyle in being able to sort out signings so early, which Clark believes is important for the club. Clark wants his squad to be highly competitive, and in the Gudjonsson signing he has someone who is both competitive and classy and not afraid to put his foot in.

Clark wants as many new additions into the club prior to the start of pre-season training on June 28th, which is critical to getting a settled squad. He will also be hoping to offload a number of the players he has made available prior to this date also.

Gudjonsson who turned 30 just a matter of days ago was born in Akranes (a seaport municipality on the west coast of Iceland located close to the national captial city of Reykjavik) and was signed by Burnley for £150,000 from AK Alkmaar in Holland. He has experience with a number of English league clubs including Aston Villa and Wolves. He also played for Leicester City, who during his final year was crowed player of the year and also won the Foxes goal of the season, a strike from the half way line in the 3-2 Walkers Stadium win over Hull City.

At Turf Moor the club regards him as a "string tackling and talented midfielder" evident of his strong battling but cultured work ethic, which should make the dashing midfielder Town's very own 'David Beckham' with his dashing Scandinavian looks, and flowing dark hair.

He made his international debut for his country on August 15th 2001 in a 1-1 friendly against Norway and played a total of seven matches during the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cup Qualification campaigns. He is married with four sons, his father has managed in England and Iceland national side (Gudjon Thordarson) and his three brothers all play professional football.

He is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 11 stone 5 pounds and his previous clubs are Burnley, Leicester City, Wolves (loan), Aston Villa (loan), Real Betis, RKC Waalwijk, Maastrichtse Voetbal Vereniging (MVV) (loan), Racing Genk and starting his professional career with his local side Iprottabandalag Akraness (IA), where is he regarded as a notable former player.

Lets hope Gudjonsson can let his football do the talking and his reputation and pedigree is shown throughout his Town career. Iceland has been known more for it's volcanoes, ash clouds and failed economy recently, but lets hope that Gudjonsson lets its Icelandic brand of football do the talking for him on the field. Forget that frozen food company with the cheesy television advertisements, this is a clear ad for the brand of football Town will give League One next season.

He certainly is coming to the Galpharm Stadium with excellent experience giving Clark what he needs in his young squad (the new signing will be the old boy of the squad) but he remains ambitious and hungry for success.

Average home league attendance biggest in 38 years!

Last season's average home league attendance of 14,893 was the biggest for Huddersfield Town in 38 years since an average of 15,464 saw Town's second and last 1970's top flight season - indeed the last time the club was in Tier One of English football.

Indeed 2009/2010 will go down as the third highest attendance since the 1970's, the highest being the Terriers first season back in the top flight when an average of 23,228 watched Division 1 football down at Leeds Road. It does also beat many throughout Town's history, which is topped by the average for the 1953/1954 season (30,820).

It is also the biggest average attendance of the new stadium with the next highest been 13,618 (1999/2000) when Town at one point topped the now Championship table and narrowly missed out on the end of season play-off's for a right to play in the top flight.

It beats last season's 13,351 by over 1,500 per match or 11.55%.

However, with just 8,500 season tickets sold for next season average attendance's for the first season in the new decade (2010's) could drop quite someway, unless Lee Clark's side can do it on the field and attract sizeable walk up support on matchdays.
