League Cup - First Round Draw

The draw for the First Round of the League Cup, once again sponsored by Carling will be made on Wednesday June 16th, one day prior to the release of The Football League fixtures. The draw will include all The Football League clubs excluding the highest placed two clubs which are Hull City and Burnley.

The draw as per pervious seasons will be seeded and regionalised for the opening rounds. Town will be one of the 35 Northern seeded teams and therefore will play any other Northern team from team 36 down. There will be 70 teams in the hat for the First Round Draw.

Last season Town received a difficult looking all League One tie with Stockport County but the Terriers progressed 3-1, losing in Round Two up at Newcastle United in an epic seven goal thriller.

The season before the one that as just completed Town were given an home tie with Bradford City, who were royally despatched 4-0 before a narrow 2-1 Galpharm Stadium loss to Championship side Sheffield United.

More news on the draw later on thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk.

Reserve team focus for next season

Lee Clark and his management team have decided against submitting a team for the Reserve League next season and as such have withdrawn Huddersfield Town for the totesport.com League for next season. In lieu of regular Reserve team matches Clark and co are planning a series of behind closed doors friendly matches, having already played the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Celtic.

Clark told the official site, that during 2009/2010 he did not feel the quality of the opposition in the reserve format for which Paul Stephenson guided the troops gave his young professionals the test they required and need.

Town are hoping the list of high quality friendly fixtures during the forthcoming season will provide a mixture of behind closed doors and those which supporters will be able to attend. Of course, the Reserve team offered season ticket holders free access to view the action at home matches and therefore if the club makes any of the fixtures public, it will be interesting to see if these are made available for Season Ticket Holders free of charge.

Clark, believes that such an arrangement for 2010/2011 will offer the right level of calibre opposition his young professionals need to continue to develop from the Academy, where the youngsters play at a very high level, right through to First Team football.

Arfield becomes a Terrier

Yesterday Scotland Under-21 and one-cap Scotland B International Scott Arfield (21) became the first signing of what promises to be a busy summer of transfer activity at the Galpharm Stadium. The highly rated versatile box-to-box midfielder delighted Town boss Lee Clark by agreeing to a three year contract in a switch reported to be worth around £400,000 to Scottish League side Falkirk.

Having progressed through the Youth ranks of the Bairns, his impressive form attracted the interest from a number of clubs both in England and in his native Scotland, and Clark and his team (who had had Arfield watched a number of times) moved swiftly after the Westfield's club relegation from the Scottish Premier League.

Although the official fee is undisclosed, it is said to be worth a club record transfer fee for the Scottish side, with the reported fee could rise to in excess of £600,000 should the midfielder continue his excellent progression with the Terriers.

The 11 capped Under 21 International is a excellent well thought of bright prospect and the Livingston born player was in a five year contract having signed a new deal with Falkirk in February 2008 having impressed enough to win the SPL Young Player of the Month prior to him signing a new contract.

Arfield had passed his medical last week, and a deal was struck leading to Arfield signing a 3 year contract and ending his 122 appearance career with Falkirk.

Lee Clark is also said to be chasing former loanee Neal Trotman who has been told he can leave Preston North End and is also linked with a move for Brighton striker Glenn Murphy.

Clark planning major squad reshuffle

Having missed out on the chance of a Wembley final last week down in London, Lee Clark was frank to say he would make a number of changes to his squad to take the club further with the revolving door policy still in place at Town it was always likely players would be made available and others would not have their contract renewed.

And with strewed businessman Dean Hoyle in charge, Town will grow on and off the field, as he still aims for self-sufficiency as crucial in the development of the football club.

Having signed Scott Arfield yesterday, a number of players were joining the likes of Dean Heffernan, Ian Craney, Lewis Nightingale and Spencer Harris in leaving the club. Left back Robbie Williams, Tasar Hassan and Phil Jevons were all released as their contracts had expired. Matthew Glennon, Chris Lucketti and Michael Flynn were three other players the Terriers agreed to terminate the contracts of other the course of the season.

On loan players Danny Drinkwater (Manchester United), Neal Trotman (Preston) and Nathan Eccleston (Liverpool) all returned to their parent clubs.

Other January 2010 capture Krystian Pearce who has featured heavily on the bench since joining until the summer from Birmingham City and featured once in the defeat at Southampton in January is in discussions with the Terriers management over a contract deal.

A number of under contract players have been told by Lee Clark that they do not feature in his plans and thus made available Simon Eastwood, Joe Skarz, Andy Butler, Jim Goodwin, Michael Collins, James Berrett, Lionel Ainsworth and Tom Denton. Last summer signing Robbie Simpson will also be allowed to exit the Galpharm Stadium on a loan deal.

With the numbers Clark is looking to offload this summer, clearly shows, he wants another experienced midfielder, a goalkeeper, a quality left back and an experienced striker. Once again, as with two season's ago, and to some extent last summer there will be a massive interest from HTAFC in the transfer market with Town looking to offload eight players permanently and bring in perhaps another four or five quality players to add to that of Scott Arfield deal concluded on Monday.

Last season Clark who was about to commence his first full season as manager of Huddersfield Town brought in six new players and saw 15 players leave the club in differing circumstances prior to start of the 2009/2010 season. 12 months earlier former boss Stan Ternent brought in nine permanent players and 1 loan deal prior to the end of August.

Of Ternent's nine permanent signings made during May 2008 to August 2008 only one (Gary Roberts) remains in the plans of the current Galpharm Stadium management team.

"Believe in Blue & White", because this young team, this young hungry team will only get better and learn from the disappointment of the Play-Off Semi-Final exit this season and Lee Clark and Dean Hoyle are both primed and ready to ensure that this reborn and progressing HTAFC is "Ready to inspire"

Make sure you are behind the Terriers as they continue to develop on and off the field in 2010/2011 and make sure you and Town are "Together, Forever" and be "Forever Blue".

'Sonic' leaves Terriers

During the January transfer window Dean Heffernan became only the second Australian born footballer to wear the bright blue and white of Huddersfield Town having joined until the end of the season from A-League side Centreal Coast Mariners. The left-back nicknamed "Sonic" made 15 appearances for the Terriers following his debut at the end of January at Yeovil Town.

Heffernan who has just celebrated his 30th birthday will now return to his native Australia, where he will take up his pre-contract agreement with the A-League's newest club Melbourne Heart in the sports mad state of Victoria.

Heffernan who has two international caps for the Socceroos missed out on making the Australia team for the World Cup this summer, enjoyed his time in Huddersfield and set-up home in the Lindley area of the town bringing over his Australian born girlfriend Tamara. The Aussie said he enjoyed this time at a "fantastic club" calling the Town fans "fanatical and brilliant".

The player hailing from Sydney in South West Australia recently wrote an article in top Australian newspaper Sydney Morning Herald, about his rewarding time playing for Town.

Argubally Heffernan's best game came at Leyton Orient where he helped the Terriers to an impressive 2-0 victory. However, he was twice unceremoniously replaced by Lee Clark during the defeats at Southampton and Brentford. He was distraught after the Southampton loss, and you could see what football and the club meant to Dean. He also revealed he received a "rocket" from Clark having lost out in a tussle with Gary Holt which led to Norwich City's second goal at the Galpharm Stadium, in the League One Champions 3-1 win.

Indeed having been replaced as a 83rd minute substitution at Brentford on Saturday April 10th, 2010 proved to be Heff's last action in a Town shirt.

Dean who will go with warm wishes from everyone connected to Huddersfield Town and this website told the local Examiner newspaper "It's a great sporting city, and a wonderful place to live (talking of Melbourne), but I've made some great friends in Huddersfield, and I'll really miss the place."

Heffernan is due to leave for Down Under, next week, all the best with Heart mate!

Robins fightback to secure date at Wembley!

Danny Wilson's Swindon Town will be either Huddersfield's or Millwall's opponents in the League One Play-Off Final on May 29th, after defeating Charlton Athletic 5-4 on penalties at a packed Valley.

Finishing the regular season in fifth place the Wiltshire men had a goal advantage going into the second leg after beating the Addicks 2-1 at the County Ground on Friday evening. That lead was quickly evaporated when Simon Ferry put past his own 'keeper on 27 minutes and Charlton went 2-0 up on the night and in front 3-2 on aggregate when David Mooney scored a late first half goal.

Despite going down to 10 men when they had their captain sent off, Wilson's side fought back and levelled on aggregate on 74 minutes through First Leg hero Danny Ward. Parity in terms of numbers was assured as the game drifted to extra time when Miguel Angel Llera saw red for a lunge on Charlie Austin.

Each side to their credit went to win it inside the 30 minutes of extra time, but in the end after 120 minutes of pulsating football, the sides could not be separated and penalties decided the contest.

Swindon scored all of theirs leaving Charlton's second kick taker Nicky Bailey to be the only one of the 10 players to miss. On loan Liverpool player Stephen Darby scoring the winning penalty to send Danny Wilson and his Robins to the final later this month.

They often say fortune favours the brave and Swindon was just that coming back into the game when they looked out of it, and against a very strong Charlton side on their own patch. Once again the Play-Offs have favoured a side playing away from home second and should Town want anymore omens, when they gained promotion from this level in 1995 via the Play-Offs they did do so by beating a South West club in the Wembley Final!

Arfield set to become a Terrier?

Falkirk Scotland Under 21 midfielder Scott Arfield is set to become the first signing for next season as Town are reported to have had a £400,000 bid agreed with The Bairns for the highly rated talented Scottish International and giving Arfield a medical and agreeing personal terms.

Arfield has progressed through the youth ranks with The Bairns and scored three goals last season. He has made in excess of 100 appearances for the Scottish side since the Dechmont born midfielder made his debut at the start of the 2007/2008 season.

Last summer Falkirk's Scottish rivals Hamilton made an initial £100,000 offer for Arfield, which was turned down as was an improved offer of £300,000. Of the first Academical offer The Bairns were quoted as saying "thought they had missed a zero in the figure they offered". So clearly Falkirk will be resolute to retain the services of their number 10 as they bid to gain promotion back to the SPL at the first time of asking.

The Westfield club's prized asset was being chased by a number of Scottish Premier League clubs and English rivals Southampton, but it is understood that Town have made a deal for the player who wears number 10 at Falkirk.

He is highly regarded in Scotland and it came as no surprised when Hearts, Hibernian and Hamilton all led the SPL clubs attempting to lure Arfield away from Falkirk. Indeed Hamilton attempted to sign the player in January upping their bid from £100,000 to £300,000.

Bairns boss Steven Pressley will be disappointed to see Arfield depart who scored three goals last season (all penalties). His last goal for Falkirk was during their May 1st home game against St Mirren, which gave the home side the lead only for the Buddies to fight back to equalise.

As the Falkirk official website comments "Scott is one of the brightest young talents in Scotland ... Possessing tremendous stamina levels is equally comfortable operating as a box-to-box midfielder, a defensive midfield shield or in a more offensive role off a main striker."

If the rumours and reports are true, it looks like Lee Clark could have lured yet another excellent hungry, progressing young player to his ever-growing ranks of 'Clarke's Babes'.

The brand of football Clarke is bringing to Huddersfield Town and the type of player that interests clearly shows that Town are on the (right) journey and that HTAFC is "Ready to Inspire".

During his second spell which recently as been besieged with injuries he made 16 appearances for the Terriers, his first spell amassed 76 appearances.

His last was a second team outing in April 2009.

Although Jarvis is to officially launch this campaign next month, get in touch now with Sean if you would like to become a 'Knight of the Keep It Up Campaign in 2010/2011'.

Arfield again linked with Terriers

Falkirk's terrific young prospect Scott Arfield is again been linked with a move South following Falkirk's relegation from the Scottish Premier League. Town and Southampton, who have today been made 3/1 favourites for the league title next season are said to be linked with the Scottish Under 21 International.

Both Town and the Saints were linked with Arfield in January however the Westfield club is keen to retain their prized asset and are adamant that if any of their assets leave them, it would be for full market value.

The 21 year old has made 21 appearances for the Scottish Under 21 side scoring once, and signed a five-year contract with Falkirk in February 2008.

Arfield is in a similar mould to the Terriers onloan midfielder Danny Drinkwater from Manchester United. Likelihood is that Lee Clark would decide to buy Drinkwater who is said to be further down his advancement in professional football.

Town have also been linked with young striker Liam Boyce of Northern Ireland side Cliftonville, with Town scouts reported to have visited the home of Cliftonville for a match in February.

Brian Gibson

It is with deep regret that thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk has learnt of the passing of our former fullback Brian Gibson.
Mr Gibson, 82, made some 171 appearances for Town in the 1950's and 60's. A craggy, solid right back who opposing wingers would come up against and think how on earth do we get round this bloke who was built like the proverbial outhouse.

A man who gave me so much pleasure when watching Town as a young bairn as he was someone who epitomised what I wanted from a Town player. Someone who loved his football, loved the club and gave everything he had in every single game.

Most of my later memories are of Mr Gibson with James H. 'Jimmy' Firth, Chairman of the Town Supporters Club and Eddie Brennan in the Pools Office on Leeds Road, next door to the Town Cafe. Every Saturday they would be in there collecting the Pools books and monies to ensure another week of income for their beloved Town from the Pools organisation they so well managed and ran.

Things were so different in those days but the likes of Brian Gibson were still heroes to young boys like me, just as the Jordan Rhodes and Theo Robinson's are today.

On behalf of Town fans everywhere and especially those who can remember Brian and were privileged to have seen him play we send our sincere condolences' to his family.

To his wife, daughters, son & grandchildren plus a great grandbairn we say thank you for Brian.

A true son of Huddersfield.

The Grecians versus The Terriers is a football fixture that as been few and far between. Indeed the first fixture between the two sides did not take place until the 1975/1976 season when Saturday's hosts completed a 'double' over their West Yorkshire rivals. In total there have been 19 matches (with 9 played in Devon).

On Saturday Town's visit to the compact St. James Park will be the first in over 16 years with the home side still not certain of League One football next season looking to avenge the 4-0 loss at the Galpharm Stadium in October. That Saturday afternoon in Huddersfield gave the Terriers "Champagne Moment" for the season when Jordan Rhodes scored the Football League's quickest headed hat trick in history. Lee Novak had opened the scoring for the home side.

Town at the other end of the table, still have a slight mathematical chance of attaining that final automatic place. They will need a major swift in goal difference (therefore need a big win on Saturday) and must see Millwall draw at Swindon, and both Charlton and Leeds lose. It seems a tall order and that promotion will have to be done through the Play-Offs but stranger things in football have happened, and with this Huddersfield Town side nothing ever seems impossible.

The last visit to Exeter City was a 3-2 win for Town. Darren Bullock (2) and Iain Dunn scored the goals in March 1994. Town will be looking to emulate the team of 1980/1981 and become only the second club in Town's history to complete the 'double' over City. In that year an October 1980 4-1 win at St. James Park was followed up in April 1981 with a 5-0 drubbing of the Grecians.

Town hold a slight advantage over the 19 matches played to date with 8 wins to 6 and 5 ties. The Terriers have scored 29 goals to 21 from City. The 9 played in Exeter also favour Town with 5 wins to 3 (1 draw), with Town scoring one more goal that the Grecians with 17.

An interesting point is that Town will be looking to score their 100th goal of the season at St. James Park. They have scored 81 thus far in League One, but in all competitions have scored 99 so at least one tomorrow would give Lee Clark's side a very nice record. A victory tomorrow will see Town record the highest number of league points since 1981. It would surpass the promotion team of 1982/1983 by a point.

Interestingly if Town tie the fixture they would have the same points as the Play-Off promotion sides of 1995 and 2004 - could that be a good omen?

The match official on Saturday for the final match of the 2009/2010 regular season is Wiltshire referee Roger East. It will be East's second experience of Town having taken charge of the 2-1 loss at Charlton in October. East has taken charge of 33 matches this season showing 108 yellow cards (3.27 cards per game average) and three red cards (0.09 card per game average).

Saturday will be his third visit to the home of Exeter City this season. He was match official for the 1-1 draw with Swindon in October and the 1-0 victory over Southend in December - a match he showed 2 of his red cards.

Roger East is in his fourth season as a match referee joining the National Group of referees for the commencement of the 2007/2008 season. During that season he took charge of the 1-1 draw for Town at Brighton in January. That with the Charlton match this season is the only experience East has of Huddersfield Town.

East has more experience of Exeter and recently (April) took charge of Paul Tisdale's side 1-1 draw at Griffin Park.

Ticket News for the home leg of the Semi-Final stage

Although the Terriers still have a chance of automatic promotion during the regular season, the club is making preparations that Town may have to settle for promotion via the Play-Offs. An unbelievable set of results is required on Saturday afternoon and a big swing in goal difference for Town to make the jump into second place.

Although, as Terriers young and old will realise, anything is possible with Huddersfield Town to "Believe in Blue & White" on Saturday that we can score enough goals at Exeter to at least do all what we can do.

That said, the club is aware that the timescales between the end of the regular season and the Play-Offs is short and therefore have announced the ticketing for the home leg.

The dates of the Play-Off Semi-Final are:

First Leg:

Friday May 14th 2010 - 19:45 or
Saturday May 15th 2010 - 12:15

Second Leg:

Monday May 17th 2010 - 19:45 or
Tuesday May 18th 2010 - 19:45

The home tie will be one of the first leg dates should the Terriers finish 5th or 6th, and the second leg if the Terriers should end the regular season in 3rd or 4th. The dates will be confirmed by the Football League once the league table is finalised this Saturday. Should Town play on Friday they would play on the Monday, and if it's the Saturday they would play on the Tuesday.

Admission Price

The home leg of the Semi Final stage is selected as a Category B pricing sturcture.

It match 45 of 46 of the League One regular season tomorrow afternoon and the final match of the season for Lee Clark's side at the Galpharm Stadium. Town secured a place in the League One Play-Offs last weekend at Stockport County and still are mathematically in the hunt for the second and final automatic promotion place.

Intent on continue their excellent performances Lee Clark prepares his side to continue their form as look to go into the Play-Offs full of confidence. They have won five of their last 6 matches, their last 3 at home and kept three clean sheets in those last three matches. In contrast visiting manager Aide Boothroyd has seen his U's Play-Offs dashed with only one win in their last 11 fixtures. The last time United won on their travels was at Yeovil Town in mid-February.

Chairman Dean Hoyle has reduced ticket prices for Saturday's match to £10 for adults and concessions of £5 in a bid to encourage people to come on down to the Galpharm on Saturday to enjoy professional football and the board of the club is hoping for a crowd in the region of 18,000.

Moved by the atmosphere and the spirit of the fans during the last home victory (1-0 against Millwall) and the 3,400 who effectively made Edgeley Park last Saturday a home fixture for Clark's men, Hoyle is looking for the fans energetic and passionate support again as the club hopes for a Millwall-esque atmosphere on Saturday.

16,000 blue and white shirts will be strategically placed in the stadium on Saturday as the club wants the fans to "Believe" and as this website as said all season "Believe in Blue & White"!

In addition in the Fantastic Media Family Stand, Vuvuzela horns will be available as well as clap banners - which appear to be in the mould of those popular used banners in the AFL in Australia. The club in the words of Commercial Director Sean Jarvis wants to create an "electric atmosphere" as they look to dispose of Colchester and gain revenge for the earlier season 1-0 loss at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

An highly talented, respected and experienced referee attends the Galpharm Stadium on Saturday in Keith Stroud (Hampshire). Stroud has officiated matches at the very highest level in England and holds the Hampshire Football Association Referees' Development Manager position, is a former Assistant referee (FIFA listed) and commenced his Football League career in 2004. He joined the top level of English referees (the 'Select Group') in 2007.

Saturday's match will be Stroud's first taste of the Galpharm Stadium and indeed either side this season. A season in which the official has taken 25 Football League matches showing 102 yellow cards (average 4.08 per game) and 10 red cards (average 0.40 per game). Card happy Stroud has failed to keep his card in his pocket at any time this season.

The only occasion that Stroud has been 'man in the middle' was a January 2006 2-0 defeat at Brentford. During that match he sent off two (Richard Newman of Brentford and Town's keeper Paul Rachubka) and booked a further 3 players. His last experience of Saturday's visitors Colchester was in a League One match at the Walkers Stadium when the U's drew 1-1 with Leicester City in March 2009.

Stroud's last match on April 13th was a League Two fixture at Shrewsbury Town during which time he showed two yellow cards, his last League One match was the explosive 1-0 Bristol Rovers home victory over MK Dons on April 5th. He showed 7 yellow cards and 1 red card.

Smile Awhile on the minds!

It certainly is becoming accepted once again as the official anthem of Huddersfield Town and tomorrow the club want the supporters to raise the blue and white banana shaped roof of the Galpharm Stadium in a passionate and stirring rendition of 'Smile Awhile'. It is certainly something that delights this website to learn of this as it's an anthem we are very passionate about and have championed it's cause since the Play-Off era of 2004!

Back in 2004 the Terrier became one of the last sides to win the Nationwide League Play-Offs as the following season it moved to Coca-Cola. Can they emulate that in 2010, and become one of the final sides to lift up the Coca-Cola League Play-Off trophies before the move to utility company nPower?

Perhaps one of the reason's why "Smile Awhile" (the original is called "Till We Meet Again", affectionately called "Smile Awhile") is so powerful for Town fans is the sentimental value it holds. It was used as the 'Town Anthem' the Town cup song for the procession of FA Cup Finals in the glory years of the 1920's.

Smile Awhile, which reflected the great nature of our beloved Huddersfield Town had lyrics which showed the power of the football club, a football club renowned for been successful and for playing the game of football the right way.

Smile Awhile, which as recently just been reintroduced into the minds of the Town supporters was used as the official Town Anthem between the 1920's and the 1960's. In more recent times it as been used before the players entrance and at the final whistle.

The original song "Till we meet again" was a favourite towards the end of the First World War having been written in 1918. At it's heights the song sold five million copies. Richard Whiting wrote the lyrics to the original tune, with the music score by Raymond B Egan.

The tune may be slow, but sung with passion it's meaning and words are so very powerful. I am sure the supporters who sung it at Middlesborough Riverside Stadium home in Brian Horton's day for a Coca-Cola match (in which nearly 5,000 Town fans attended the match), will remember the passion in which they sung it that evening, and the amazing pride it instilled in them whilst singing it. The passion excelled from the 3,400 Town supporters at Edgeley Park last Saturday will need very little introduction to the song, that raised the airs on the back of the neck last Saturday afternoon.

The original words to the more commonly used Town section of the song and the Town words are shown below. If you would like a small downloaded file of the song in it's original format in midi (.mid) format click here.

The Town lyrics are:

All the while upon the field of play,
Thousands gladly cheered them on their way,
Often you could hear them say,
Who can beat the Town today?

Then the bells shall ring so merrily,
Every goal shall be a memory,
So Town play up and bring the cup,
Back to Huddersfield.

The original lyrics:

Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu
When the clouds roll by I'll come to you.
Then the skies will seem more blue,
Down in Lover's Lane, my dearie.

Wedding bells will ring so merrily
Ev'ry tear will be a memory.
So wait and pray each night for me
Till we meet again.

For a PDF version of the Smile Awhile lyrics click here. Click here to listen to the version played at the Galpharm Stadium.

Keep the faith in Lee, Dean and the players, and who knows if the belief is there and the dream is strong enough ... perhaps Smile Awhile will be rung round Wembley Stadium on Saturday May 29th.
