Ternent captures striker on month's loan deal

Stan Ternent has signed former Stockport County striker Liam Dickinson on a month's loan from Derby County. Dickinson who impressed during Stockport's promotion from League Two last season joined Derby in the summer for £750,000 but as failed to command a regular place in Paul Jewell's Championship side.

Town were reported throughout the summer to be interested in the big striker, who should feature for the Terriers on Saturday against MK Dons.

This is a sensational capture for Town and should give the Terriers added strength in offence. Jewell believes that his player will benefit from having this loan spell with Town and Town fans should be excited by the prospect of seeing a striker who many wanted Town to sign in the summer play for us, if only on loan.

Ternent is keen for Town to have a tall target man and the 6ft 4inch tall striker will offer Town a ready-made package to offer additional height to that of Andy Booth's and should at the very least be on the bench on Saturday with new signing Ian Craney set to start.

Neither of the two signings this week, will be at Town to make up the numbers, but will be offering additional competition in a very big squad for Town. Ternent must now offer his thoughts to releasing some players however by full transfers out of loan signings, with Jon Worthington, Michael Collins, Joe Skarz and Malvin Kamara the likely candidates to leave the club either permanently or on loan.

Ternent knows Jewell very well having come to Town from Derby where he was assistant manager, so he knows his young striker will be well coached and well looked after. Dickinson is ideal to give Andy Booth that extra support as the legend as been struggling all week and could be missing for the visit of MK Dons at the weekend.

Reserves defeat Leeds

Mick Docherty's reserves got off to the ideal start with an away win to local rivals Leeds United. The Terriers edged out a strong United side is a five goal thriller with goals from Malvin Kamara and two from Phil Jevons (one a penalty) gave Town the ideal start to their Central League campaign.

Craney becomes number nine!

The capture yesterday of Ian Craney from League Two side Accrington Stanley on a three year deal. The 26 year old attacking midfielder joins Stan Ternent for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the six figure region.

Craney will take the number 5 shirt vacated by David Mirfin's transfer last week to Scunthorpe United. He is the ninth capture by Town in this transfer window.

Town sign Denton with more to come!

Young Wakefield FC striker Tom Denton, a lifelong Town fan has chosen the Terriers over Blackburn Rovers and Crystal Palace in signing a three year deal. Denton a 19 year old born in the Town lists Andy Booth as a hero and at 6ft 7inch tall could just be like his hero in the air!

The latest signing for an undisclosed fee says joining Town is a "dream come true" and will take the number 24 shirt on the first team roster this season. Stan Ternent is delighted to have captured Denton, who he believes has a great feature and is full of potential. Although the eighth summer signing travelled with Town to Colchester United on Saturday he was not part of the team but Ternent has commented saying "I don't think it will be long before the fans see him in a blue and white shirt".

Denton had a week's trial with both Palace and Blackburn, scoring for the Rovers reserves during that time.

Following the weekend's second league draw out of two at Colchester Ternent has said that another player, perhaps as early as today or tomorrow will be brought into the squad. The rumours are that it will be a left sided midfield player, but Ternent has given nothing away other than to confirm that his ninth summer capture will be arriving this week.

The "right thing to do"

Commenting on the £150,000 transfer of David Mirfin to League One Scunthorpe United, manager Stan Ternent believes having six centre backs it was the right thing for everyone to let Mirfin move on.

He said that Mirfin would not be a first choice centre half if everyone was fit and the move to the Iron will give the Town Academy product the opportunity of first team football.

Bantams hammered as Town progress with ease

Match Result | Huddersfield Town 4-0 Bradford City | Carling Cup 1 | Galpharm Stadium | 12/08/2008

Huddersfield Town ran riot against one of their closest rivals with a thumping 4-0 victory in front of the Galpharm faithful. For the large number visiting from Bradford it will have been a hard pill to take, seeing Town score four times without reply in the second period, after their new signing Michael Boulding could have given the Bantams the lead.

Town took control of the match midway through the first half and it was the pace of the counterattack which the City side struggled to contain. Although it remained level at half time, Town finished the half much strong a prelude of what was to come in the second with Luke Beckett and Andy Holdsworth both having decent efforts towards the end of the half.

Any thoughts at half time that it 'could have be one of those games' for the Terriers were quickly squashed, as Town opened the scoring to give their dominance a justified reward. Robbie Williams cross found the head of Jon Worthington who headed the ball home to give Town the lead within three minutes of the restart.

The lead was doubled when Gary Roberts scored his first Town goal 14 minutes later. Picking the ball up on the half way line the former Ipswich winger slid through the Bradford defenders before clinically stroking the ball past City 'keeper Rhys Evans.

The victory was assured and the icing was on the cake when Robbie Williams sublime 75th minute free kick crashed into the back of the net from all of 25 yards out. If Williams goal was the icing, then Roberts second with 10 minutes to go put cherries on the top. Yet another attack with pace from the home side, found City in all kinds of problems. City failed all evening to deal with the pace of the Town attacks in which Danny Cadamateri was often effective. The former Bradford striker was pivotal for the fourth goal, as he raced through the visitors defence, rounded Evans in the goal before sliding the ball across for Roberts to scoring into an empty net as easily as he would have liked.

The scoreline was nothing more than Town's energetic play in the second half-deserved and a big improvement on Saturday. City gave a good account of themselves in the first half showing why they have the 'favourites' tag for League Two promotion. Stan Ternent brought three players into the side, all of whom did well. Luke Beckett, Robbie Williams and Jon Worthington all started.

The manager was quick to praise Danny Cadamateri and Gary Roberts but pointed to a decent performance from the entire team. Ternent told the official website "I'm delighted. I thought we played quite well - much better in the second half ... we scored some fantastic goals ... all in all, it's been a good night's work and now we have the bragging rights!"

Stuart McCall was quick to heap praise on Town calling us "a very good side", who outplayed and outfought his Bantams side. McCall admitted that once the superior play of Town grabbed the first goal and Town upped the temp and efforts in the second half, his Bradford side simply could do nothing to contain Ternent's marauding offensive play. McCall commenting to the official Bradford website "Huddersfield are a division higher than us and a far better side, that's just a fact."

Fair play for an open and honest appraisal of the match by the Bradford manager who was impressed with Town's new winger Gary Roberts, whose paced caused City problems all evening.

But the taste of defeat for City fans will be difficult to take having put in a abject performance on their last visit to the Galpharm Stadium. But what was commendable was the number travelling with Bradford City which ensured a decent atmosphere. But by the time of the Terriers fourth goal, the City fans could not wait to leave in their droves, as they must have felt disheartened by the hammering dished out to them by clinical Town in a lovely second half display.

It is now four wins in the last five matches for Town against Bradford, as they swept City away with some remarkable ease and the gulf in class between the two sides was very evident at the final whistle.

Even Bradford's own website said how Town "embarrassed" City and Town have now not lost to Bradford in four years. Perhaps on the showing this evening, it is a good job that Michael Boulding (a reported Town target in the summer) was not captured by Stan Ternent.

Town must build on this victory and take the performance level and the confidence this 'derby' win will have given them into the next League fixture at Colchester United's new Weston Home Community Stadium on Saturday. If they can follow this victory up with a first league win their and then be given a decent round two opponent, the fans who booed on Saturday will be very much silenced.

Four Season's hit "Oh What a Night!" would be an apt soundtrack for the victory yesterday, more of the same and Town will quickly see excellent results in League One.

Colchester tickets updates

Very little seems to have been made officially to the Town club at the moment, but sources from Essex report that tickets for home supporters have gone on sale and made available for the clash at the new stadium - the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

For Town fans this situation as been a farce, with many wishing to travel but with no away supporter parking available on the stadium campus, many will have problems parking. It is a poor situation and something perhaps Colchester United FC should investigate where their systems and processes have fallen down and issue an apology to our club and it's supporters.

A shuttle bus service will be in operation for the match, details of which should be included with the match ticket. After testing this service at a recent pre-season match Colchester United have announced improvements to it. For details of the Shuttle Bus service click here.

Around 1,750 - 2,000 tickets should be available for the clash, but Town fans will not be able to purchase them from Huddersfield, but will have to travel to Colchester on Saturday and hope they arrive in time to purchase one of the tickets. It is believed that Colchester would not be able to ship the tickets to the Galpharm Stadium in time for the fixture.

For further details click here. The prices indicated on this link are what have been shown previously on Colchester United's official website, whether or not these apply for the Town match Saturday is anyone's guess.

To add further misery to Town fans planning to travel, there is a music concert at nearby Chelmsford which will add to the traffic congestion in the South and fans are warned because of this and the ticketing situation they need to give themselves plenty of time to arrive at Colchester United's new home in plenty of time.

All in all, Town fans appear to have been badly treated by a distinct lack of organisation at Colchester and it is not good enough for travelling Town fans to travel with only a hope of seeing Town for the first time on their travels in 2008/2009 season.

It really is something when the Town club is still awaiting confirmation of the most basic elements of the tickets - the number to be issued and the price with the match just four days away.

Anyone wanting to enquire about tickets should contact the Colchester ticket off on 0871 2262161 but be prepared for a lengthy wait. Apparently United have had issues with their ticketing system including it's e-commerce platform. Once available, Town fans will be able to use the online system to purchase match tickets.

Mirfin leaves Town

Defender David Mirfin has left Huddersfield Town for a fee of around £150,000 joining League One rivals Scunthorpe United. Town will receive a 25% sell out clause of any further sale of the defender by the Iron. The 23 year old has signed a three year deal at Glanford Park.

Sheffield born Mirfin who came through the Academy ranks at Town has dropped down the pecking order this summer following the arrivals of Andy Butler, David Unsworth and Chris Lucketti. Mirf scored 12 times in 161 matches for the Terriers and we wish him all the best.

-

Boothy out!

Andy Booth is out of tonight's Carling Cup clash with Bradford City due to ankle injury that forced him off during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Stockport County. Stan Ternent is confident that Booth will be available for the match at Colchester at the weekend.

Ternent is keeping stun about who is to replace Boothy in the starting line-up. Former Bradford City target Luke Beckett who replaced Booth on Saturday could start, but Ternent could opt for either Keigan Parker or Phil Jevons.

Ternent is promising the supporters an improvement on the performance from Saturday and to ensure the club take it seriously (something Bradford's manager is promising) he will put out a strong side.

The match day programme for this evening's match as been reduced to just £2.00, so make sure you purchase your copy of Town's first cup tie in their centenary season.

Boothy goal not enough to give Town opening day win!

Match Result | Huddersfield Town 1-1 Stockport County | League One | Galpharm Stadium | 09/08/2008

Andy Booth's headed goal was not enough to give Town all three points after a mediocre display against promoted Stockport County. In typical Town fashion, they conceded an equalising goal on the stroke of half-time through Tommy Rowe who stroked the ball past Matthew Glennon unmarked.

A point was perhaps the fair result, as it was the visitors in the second half who would have encouraged their noisy travelling support with a number of efforts on goal. With seconds to go Carl Baker made Glennoin pull of an acrobatic save to prevent County winning the match.

Although Town started brightly and showed some encouraging signs, they seemed to struggle against a well-organised and powerful County side. Indeed Boothy himself found himself over-shadow by a number of County defenders and took a number of kicks in the process. As poor as Town were in the second half, so were the few sporadic boos which welcomed the final whistle.

There is still work to be done by Stan Ternent and his management team and this draw, may just ensure he intensifies his efforts to bring in further new talent to the Terriers squad.

Mirfin interests Scunthorpe!

This summers transfer dealings between Huddersfield Town and Scunthorpe United seems to not want to 'let up', with Town defender David Mirfin attracting interest from the Iron. Irons boss Neil Adkins has admitted that he has approach Town with a view to loaning the Town defender.

Following the arrival of Chris Lucketti, Andy Butler and David Unsworth Mirfin's starting position and indeed match day squad is far from certain and he may benefit from a period away from Town.

-

Unsworth agrees deal

Former England left sided defender David Unsworth has agreed terms with Huddersfield Town and will sign officially for the club on Monday. Although the 34 year old is subject to a medical, he has impressed Stan Ternent enough to secure a deal at the Galpharm Stadium believed to be two-years.

He is available for selection this afternoon against Stockport County (kick off 15:00) due to him signing a non-contract agreement.

More on the news of Unsworth medical on Monday.

Appeal Tickets!

Following an appeal led by Mark Wilkinson and popular message forum datm.co.uk a couple of months ago enough money was raised and 28 tickets have been purchased for use by junior football clubs and 23 tickets for use by disadvantaged groups. For the Stockport County and MK Dons fixtures these have all been issued to a group of young adults who have been in foster care, a child disability unit and three local children's homes.

The generosity of Town fans was amazing and the response to the appeal unprecedented. To find out more about the message forum visit datm.co.uk. This is terrific and very typical of a big number of Town fans and goes towards creating the feeling of "All Together Now".

Gunners defeat Town!

Match Result: Huddersfield Town 1-2 Arsenal | Pre-Season | Galpharm Stadium | 19,044 | 07/08/2008

A bumper crowd including some 3,500 following the visitors enjoyed an entertaining final pre-season match for the Terriers, that despite ending in defeat the home side gave a good account of themselves. To be brutally honest the Premiership side deserved the victory following their second half showing.

Stan Ternent who at times on the Town bench with his right hand man Ronnie Jepson looked animated and during a difficult spell in the second half was off his bench a number of times. Ternent was pleased with the workout and will have been pleased with the display of the side in the first half.

Danny Cadamateri particularly impressed as the former Everton man used his pace and vision to create confusion in the Gunners defence. His lively runs and link up play which will be a benefit to the side in League One next season was quality as he impressed on his way to the man of the match award.

However, despite an excellent fluid first half where Town held the ball well, passed with ease and moved it with skill, the second half was poor as they looked disjointed following 11 changes made by Ternent at half time. Town looked wearier in attack and more fickle in defence.

Of the first half showing, perhaps the only negative point is that of the set pieces. Town secured a number of corners in the first half, and none really materialised although the Arsenal 'keeper Lukasz Fabianski. Matthew Glennon in the Terriers goal for the first half had to be alert twice to Walcott's threat. Once very early in the game, where he blocked for a corner, the second occasion the English international flicked the ball into the area, where the Arsenal attacking player skied over.

In an impressive first half, in which Luke Beckett could have given Town the lead, the Terriers looked composed and energetic. Chris Lucketti also went close with an header, but the ever lively Theo Walcott gave the Town defence an interesting test during a first half Town shaded.

Ternent knows his starting 11 for Saturday's match, although he is still hoping to bring in more players to join the seven new signings. New signing Jim Goodwin was impressive in the centre of the park, timed his runs well, enjoys both the ball at his feet and a tackle.

Town took the lead on 75 minutes through James Berrett's deflected shot, despite Town looking disjointed and lacking any type of real threat in offence. Indeed it was the skill of Arsenal that you felt would grab a goal, even after Town had opened the scoring in the Herbert Chapman Trophy match.

A long Nathan Clarke throw caused confusion in the young Gunners defence and Berrett smashed home. But the lead last just four minutes. Arsenal broke down the flank and a ball into the middle and Sanchez Watt steered the ball past substitute 'keeper Alex Smithes. Perhaps the young Town keeper should have done better with his efforts to save the shot.

The game was there then for the taking and Arsenal took it. With just minutes of the 90 remaining the visitors took the lead. After having two near chances, the Premiership side scored their second and the winning goal through Nacer Barazite's effort. Simon Eastwood, who had replaced Alex Smithes just moments earlier, got an hand to Barazite's shot, but it looped up and went into the back of the net, which delighted the travelling red and white army. The Dutchman showed the class act the Gunners believe he is by turning his Town defender inside out, before unleashing a fierce drive.

In the end Town got what they wanted a decent workout against a good side, with Aresne Wenger particularly impressed by the organisation of the Town side. If Town play like they did in the first half in the league next season they will score goals and be prudent at the back, although the second half display was a little disappointing. Perhaps now the manager must look to allow some of the players to go and intensify his efforts to continue to bring talent into the squad.

Andy Booth and Michael Flynn were left out of the match due to injury, but the club believe they should be available for selection on Saturday. The only concern out of the match, which was played generally in good spirit was a knock to Danny Codman.

Ternent has told the official website that he has made a decision on David Unsworth, after his showing during the Aresnal match, lets hope he is wearing the blue and white stripes on Saturday. Unsworth in a defence of Andy Butler, Chris Lucketti and Andy Holdsworth looked extremely confident, although at times they got caught out by the electric pace of the Arsenal attacks with Unsworth in the first half making one very impressive block.

Town need another winger (on the left) and a striker with 20 plus goals in him. Also they could do with signing Paul Gerrard to give Matthew Glennon some experienced back up, allowing either or both of Smithes and Eastwood to go out on loan for some match experience.

And for the occasion, it was an excellent atmosphere and a decent game. Perhaps more could have been done regarding pre-match entertainment, but there were fireworks after the presentation of the trophy to the Arsenal side.

At half time a replica of the Arsenal Herbert Chapman bust was presented to Town chairman Ken Davy but his Arsenal counterpart Peter Hill-Wood.

Town side:
Matthew Glennon (45, Alex Smithes / 84, Simon Eastwood)
Andy Holdsworth (45, Tom Clarke)
David Unsworth (45, Robbie Williams)
Jim Goodwin (45, Jon Worthington)
Chris Lucketti [C] (45, Nathan Clarke [C])
Andy Butler (45, David Mirfin)
Gary Roberts (45, Danny Codman / 74, Shane Killock)
Michael Collins (45, James Berrett)
Luke Beckett (45, Phil Jevons)

Arsenal squad announced

Premiership Arsenal who this evening (19:00) play a Pre-Season match with Huddersfield Town at the Galpharm Stadium have announced their squad. To view the list click here. Although Arsenal is bringing with them north a youngish squad and one of first team fringe players, reports from London suggest that Arsenal will start with a strong side in a mark of respect to what is a Centenary celebration. To be honest whatever the side the Gunners employ this evening, it will a strong one that will wear the famous red and white shirts.

"A night of celebration" as manager Stan Ternent as put it, Town fans have bought tickets in their thousands for this special fixture with well over 15,000 expected this evening. It promises to be a great night to mark the 100 years history of the Terriers and one of the biggest pre-season gates in the club's history.

Terriers set for seventh summer signing!

Stan Ternent should capture in the next few days his seventh summer signing by acquiring the services of defender David Unsworth on a one or two year contract. The former England international is available on a free transfer following his release this summer from Championship side Burnley.

Unsworth impressed during Terriers 2-1 home victory over Sheffield United and will add extra experience to a relatively young defence. Although he is attracting interest from a number of clubs, it is hoped he will choose Town and will sit down with Ternent early next week.

On trial goalkeepr Paul Gerrard is set to sign as well in the coming week, essentially leaving either Alex Smithes or Simon Eastwood (perhaps both) to go out on loan to gain match experience.

Catering not to be an issue for Town matches

After a well publicised issue with concourse availability at the recent Rugby League Semi-Final at the Galpharm Stadium, the stadium catering company EMC have said that this will not happen at any point during Town's season.

At the semi-final the caterers ran out of larger and beer prior to kick-off and served according to some supporters as "soft drink, which was lukewarm" and some supporters were left very disappointed of their experience with the Galpharm Stadium.

But the Terriers Director of Business Development Sean Jarvis has commented to thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk that he has been given reassurances that this will not happen at the forthcoming Town games.

Lets hope not, and with the increase in match day season ticket holders, the catering company must ensure that they have enough product to satisfy demand and can serve it in a quick fire fashion.

Get there early

The message for those attending the Arsenal Centenary Match, Wednesday (kick off 7pm) is to get to the stadium in plenty of time. A crowd in the region of 13,000 is expected and with that will bring the added traffic problems around the stadium, not to mention the excellent pre-match experience which is planned.

Terriers blunt Blades!

Match Result: Huddersfield Town 2-1 Sheffield United | Pre-Season | Galpharm Stadium | 02/08/2008

Town got their pre-season back onto winning ways with an impressive 2-1 victory over local rivals Sheffield United at home. Fielding 4 former Blades in the squad Town handed United their first pre-season defeat. Once again Stan Ternent took the opportunity to use a big portion of this squad, but there is still work to do ahead of a week today but as Ronnie Jepson told the official site they are building a team the club and the supporters can be proud of.

The Blades took the lead from veteran Gary Speed after 21 minutes, following a great start to the match from both sides. It had however been the Terriers who had started offensively more dangerously and could have taken the lead multiple times before Speed's headed goal. But before the half hour mark the Town were level with Danny Cadamateri restoring the parity with a super finish past Paddy Kenny in the visitors goal.

New signing Keigan Parker, gave the home fans what they hope he will offer time and time again next season, a goal and with that a winning goal. With the game drifting to a draw and just 12 minutes left the former Blackpool man benefited from a poor Blades clearance and Parker swiftly placed a neat volleyed finish into the back of the net. Moments before the goal Town could have scored when Joe Skarz clipped the bar with an effort

Stan Ternent is set to open talks with former England defender David Unsworth with a view to bringing in the highly experienced 34 year old to Town before the big kick-off in a week's time. Trialist Tony Grant left the Galpharm on Friday and will not be offered a contract at Town.

Town side:
Matthew Glennon (75, Alex Smithes), Andy Holdsworth (69, Tom Clarke), David Unsworth (68, Joe Skarz), Jim Goodwin (68, James Berrett), Chris Lucketti [C] (69, Nathan Clarke), Andy Butler (69, David Mirfin), Gary Roberts (69, Robbie Williams), Jon Worthington (65, Michael Collins), Andy Booth (65, Luke Beckett), Danny Cadamateri (65, Keigan Parker), Mike Flynn (68, Malvin Kamara).
