Ritchie reflects on poor night for Town - is it time for the manager to go? Huddersfield Town manager Andy Ricthie, who now must admit even to himself that his play-off aspirations are now over reflected on last night's 2-1 defeat at Hartlepool United with disappointment, admitting that Town "deserved nothing". As the manager of the on-field activity Ritchie must take responsibility for that and ensure that the players that are not turning up on the field of play, deserving nothing for the club, but are getting paid are released or transferred in the summer. This season what started with optimism, hope and aspirations as turned into a damp squid and a total mess. Indeed the club is at a worse point now than when Ritchie took over from Peter Jackson, with thoughts that maybe the manager needs to go in summer. He seems able to influence the players for big matches getting them well prepared and motivated, yet for the lesser teams he seems to struggle. That is why Town have been in recent weeks easily rolled over by the likes of Hartlepool United, Swindon Town and Gillingham. The season is far from over, but it is now a relegation battle rather than anything else. Ritchie said before the match at Victoria Park that his team would learn for the Leyton Orient match - where Town secured an excellent hard fought victory and would continue fighting and battling for victories for the faint remaining hopes of the play-offs. None of that was evident last night. "We didn't come out in the second half and we got what we deserved" said Ritchie who saw his side trail at half time 1-0, and then 2-0 down through a quality second Pools goal minutes into the second. So just what was his team talk last night at half time - not good enough, effective enough or inspiring enough. And that is plain and simply not good enough. There are players not playing with the pride and honour required to don the famous blue and white stripped shirts, and that must be sorted. Clueless the manager seems to be but with it, the club is losing its lifeblood - the fans. "Chalk and cheese" he added after the match - is that himself or the team or both? Maybe Ritchie should take up chalking the whitewash on match days or making cheese and pickle sandwiches in his local cafe as the former Manchester United striker, is not giving the club any attacking impetus, indeed they look scared to attack, and the goals this season have dried up from previous seasons. The manager continued: "But we were all over the place after the break, and while we could have sneaked a draw, we couldn’t complain about losing. In the second half, none of the team got close enough to their players, we didn’t pick up enough second balls and we didn’t react quickly enough in either box."Get it right Ritchie in the remaining 10 league matches of the season and give the club's loyal, passionate and fantastic support hope for next season. Get it right in the summer with your releases, new contracts and squad additions, and if you can't hang your cap on the door and leave. Very simple really, find the desire to manage a team that has the desire to score goals and win football matches, inspire and influence the players to play with passion and pride and give the club its hope back. Stop spouting rubbish in the press, and be realistic in your judgements or inform chairman Ken Davy, it is time for a change and do the hnourable thing and leave! One thing is for sure, things must drastically change, or the hope for decent season ticket sales in Town's centenary season could be one of the lowest for seasons. Home attendance this season are certainly down from pervious seasons. 11,909 was the average for the 2004/2005 season when Town finished 9th in League One, they are down to just over 8,700 this season. The fans are voting with their feet and their money and staying away. And the club could be looking for a new main sponsor. CasinoRed.com signed up to a one year deal with the option of a further two - they were promises a 'new match day experience' for the club, well will they be pleased with the way this season as gone - the only thing red is Ritchie's face! To start with the truth and honour which Huddersfield Town FC deserves and warrants, start by admitting the play-off's are now out of the question for the club. Not mathematically impossible yet, but the way Town are playing will they pick up double-digit points from the remaining 10 league matches - difficult that one! - Loan striker high on management agenda If last night's League One defeat wasn't enough to stomach for the under-fire manager, Andy Ritchie is now turning up the heat on his search for a loan striker, following Phil Jevons calf injury. Ritchie's signing from Bristol City limped out of the Hartlepool match on 11 minutes leaving embattled Ritchie with only Andy Booth and Luke Beckett has his only two fit strikers. Jevons will be assessed today, but leaving on crutches was not a good sight. Perhaps Danny Schofield could be used as a striker if required or will the untried Danny Broadbent and Luke Malcher tbe tried? The manager could also opt to use Lucas Atkins or Malvin Kamara in the striking role. Ritchie, a striker in his playing days could always play himself and show his side how to "deserve something" out of a match - alternatively he could just stay on the sidelines, and devolve himself from all responsibility, he is clearly do at the moment. Ritchie who is looking for a tried and tested striker has revealed how in recent weeks he has missed out on five strikers and the priority remains for a championship based striker, which he is struggling to influence into the club. He wants a striker with pace and not a young or fringe player. But with the current limited striking options the manager may now have to go and find a fringe or young player - but then with a season over, we have a number of young players already in the club - give them a go. - West Yorkshire derby - date changed! Leeds match at the Galpharm Stadium planned for Easter Tuesday (March 25th) has been postponed due to International call up's (three players) for the Whites. It will now be played Tuesday April 15th (19:45). It is planned to be the biggest home attendance of the season with United selling their 3,000 allocation. - Easter at The Shop - happy holidays from thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk Kitbag - Sportswear partner Kitbag is offering visitors one of their best ever deals. Another disappointing Tuesday night away trip - surely now Ritchie must concede the play-offs are over! Match Result | Hartlepool United 2-1 Huddersfield Town | League One | Victoria Park | Att: 3,650 | 11/03/2008 Huddersfield Town can place incentives on home matches all they like but it is winning on the pitch that counts, and sadly Town have failed again this season to do this. Despite Saturday's excellent performance and victory Town have lost four of their last five league matches and that is not good enough. Like last week at Swindon Town, the Terriers gave their travelling support heartache by not turning up until well behind. Last week it was at 3-0 this week at 2-0 and despite a goal back from Nathan Clarke which gave Town hope, Andy Ritchie's men - many of whom are fighting for a new contract in the summer, simply just did not have enough to secure a victory. Pools took the lead on 30 minutes when former Town defender Sam Collins scored for the second game on the trot. His strong header from a corner had enough on it to defy the best efforts of Matt Glennon in the Town goal. Although Town had a chance through Andy Booth (making his 500th league appearance of his great career) missed the effort 8 yards out. An even bigger miss was from Hartlepool striker Michael Mackay who blazed over after excellent work by the nemesis Joel Porter had found him unmarked. The home side came racing out of the blocks in the second half against a Town side that had not conducted a heavy training session in the morning and Mackay made up for his early miss by doubling the lead. His header went past Glennon, giving the Town 'keeper no chance. And moments later with Pools threatening to run riot Glennon made a decent save to prevent Porter grabbing a third. That seemed to spur Town on, and on 64 minutes Nathan Clarke with his second goal of the season headed home an Andy Holdsworth corner. After the Clarke goal it was a pretty even affair and despite the efforts of both sides, no other goals were added to the scoreline. The home side had two excellent chances to add a third, with the second coming right at the death. Town failed to find an equaliser, and suffered a second successive Tuesday night defeat. Andy Ritchie will be hoping to put the current form behind them in the remaining 10 matches of the season, as they face many of the teams eyeing promotion and engulfed in a relegation battle. Could Town be in either, well they could, but it will be more the relegation battle, than the battle for the play-off's. Another disappointing defeat in a largely disappointing season and next Tuesday night could see Town's attendance drop to new lows - surely that can't happen on Saturday against Southend United! * Town are back in this one. It's 2-1 after 64 minutes with the third headed goal of the match. Nathan Clarke gives Town hope following an Andy Holdsworth corner. Just like last Tuesday evening it as taken Town to go well behind before they start to play. They were the better side against Swindon Town last Tuesday at the County Ground, but can this goal push them on? It's the home side that race out of the blocks first and Town who did not train this morning having left West Yorkshire for the North East at 14:00 this afternoon find themselves 2-0 down. Having failed with a gilt-edged chance in the first half Michael Mackay makes no mistake placing his header past Glennon and doubling Pools lead. Moments later Joel Porter could have made it three, but Glennon this time saved. At half time it is the home side that has the lead 1-0 following a 30 minute header from Sam Collins. Former Town apprentice Collins (who scored in the last Pools home match on Saturday) produced the goods for Danny Wilson's side following a corner after Ritchie Humphery's (the former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder) sharp shot was blocked for the corner by Nathan Clarke. Town goalkeeper Matt Glennon attempted to prevent the thunderbolt header going into the back of the net but was powerless as Collins gave the home side the lead. A worrying note for Andy Ritchie was the 11th minute injury for Phil Jevons. Town have yet to make an impression on this game, and a defeat will finally seal the nail in the play-off coffin, which even the manager must admit. Ritchie said before the game "we need to take our chances" and they have failed to do that with home 'keeper Arran Lee-Barrett beating away a Chris Brandon effort. Both sides missed glorious chances to score in the first half. Andy Booth just before half time smashed the ball over from 8 yards whilst Pools striker Joel Porter (who always seems to do well against Town!) made a fool of Nathan Clarke in a 50/50 but Michael Mackay made a mess of things unmarked - a second Hartlepool United goal then, would have just about killed off the game. Match Details Hartlepool United Goals: Collins (30), Mackay (50) Huddersfield Town Subs Not Used: Young, Hardy, Berrett. Goals: Nathan Clarke (64) Attendance Referee Mr M Russell (Hertfordshire) - Boothy's 500th game this evening! Living Town legend striker Andy Booth racks up his 500th league career appearance tonight as Town travel to the North East to face Hartlepool United. Town defender Robert Page is also making headlines with his 400th league appearance. Meanwhile Town have announced that for season ticket holders you can upgrade your seat to the Executive Club for next Tuesday night's match against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Galpharm Stadium. After a number of poor home attendance's, the club is hoping this incentive will ensure that season ticket holders attend the match. This is on a limited basis, so contact the club as soon as possible to reserve your place. Not only will you get a exclusive lounge, you will also receive a free match day programme and enjoy elevated seating in the Direct Golf UK Upper Tier. - |

Double delighted for Terriers at League Awards! Although the Terriers look highly unlikely to be challenging for end of season honours in the league, they have taken away two awards from The Football League's season awards. Off the field initiatives to bring in children and families has been recognised with Town winning the League One Family Club of the year as Town work diligently on the Fans of The Future campaign. Town have also run schemes with local schools, the Sporting Pride scheme and have for many season's had the Young Terriers in operation. And the club retains the divisional Apprentice Award with 18 year old Daniel Broadbent winning the category following Joe Skarz being named as the League's outstanding potential. Broadbent celebrated his birthday with the award! Striker Broadbent who wears the 32 shirt has made just one appearance this season coming off the bench during Town's dismal 3-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers in October. - Town target missed Andy Ritchie has revealed that Town missed out on Charlton Athletic striker Izzy McLeod. The 23 year old pacey striker was wanted by the Town boss on loan, but the former MK Dons striker wanted to remain in the second tier and opted for Colchester United instead. Missing his target has left the manager frustrated as he also spoke about other missed targets and knock-backs. - Town in the West Country tonight! The Terriers are in action tonight down in the West Country to face Swindon Town. It is little over 4 weeks since Town hosted the Robins at the Galpharm Stadium. The only goal of the game coming from former West Country based Phil Jevons (Yeovil Town) who scored inside the first minute of the match. Captain John Worthington returns for the Terriers, whilst defender Robert Page is our suspended (he was harshly sent off by rookie 22 year old referee Michael Oliver during the Swansea defeat on Saturday) and should be replaced by David Mirfin. Although with news that Aaron Hardy is back in the squad, it could see Frank Sinclair move into the centre and Hardy could play at right back. James Berrett is injured for tonight's match at the County Ground. Andy Ritchie still believes that with 13 matches remaining Town can still make the play-off's but they require 10 wins from those matches. But following their third defeat in four league matches Town are closer both in position and points to the relegation zone, and they must start to score goals on a consistent basis something the manager believes Town are sadly lacking this season. Former Town defender Jamie Vincent is missing for Swindon who have a number of selection headaches going into the match which kicks-off at 19:45. - Centenary match date with the Gooners released! The friendly match with Arsene Wenger's Premier League Arsenal side will take place on Wednesday August 6th with a 19:45 kick-off. Town could be welcoming both the Premier League and European champions. Arsenal's visit will be their first to the Galpharm Stadium, and their first since a 5-0 Leeds Road victory in a League Cup match in 1993. 14,275 packed into Leeds Road that evening for the first leg and to be fair it was all over at half time when the top flight side went into the break 2-0 up. Ian Wright's hat-trick in the second half gave Arsenal a big lead. The return trip to Highbury ended 1-1 with Iain Dunn scoring the Town goal. Alan Smith recorded the 6th Arsenal goal of the tie. - Schofield update - move for "personal and professional" reasons Danny Schofield has revealed that he wants to leave the club at the end of the season for personal and professional reason's and the talented winger who lost his brother a few months back, as talked of the delight he felt when Town fans chanted his name as he was brought on for Malvin Kamara (81 minutes) during Saturday's 1-0 defeat at home to Swansea City. In 10 years at the club Schofield who has never reached his full potential was a favourite with many sector of the Glapharm crowd will be giving his all from now until the end of the season. Town turned down an approach for the skilful player in July 2007 which delighted the former Brodswoth Miners Welfare player The 27 year old is backed in his decision by the Town management team and his family. Schofield is out of contract at the end of the season along with a number of other players Lucas Akins, Mitchell Bailey, James Berrett, Andy Booth, Chris Brandon, Danny Broadbent, Matt Glennon, Aaron Hardy, Luke Malcher, Rob Page, Danny Racchi, Frank Sinclair, Joe Skarz, Alex Smithies and Matt Young, so there is plenty of hard negotiation work for Ritchie and the board to complete from now until the start of next season. - |
