Ritchie finally gets his man!

The on-off transfer saga of Barnsley defender Robbie Williams has finally ended with the player who can play at left back or left midfield joined his former manager Andy Ritchie at the Galpharm Stadium. The 22 year old was due to sign just before pre-season commenced but he fractured his shin during a Barnsley training session.

That injury is progressing quicker than normal and although Williams will not be fit to play for 2 weeks, Ritchie is delighted to have finally captured the signature of a player he rates highly and confirm his fourth signing of the season. Williams will give excellent options on the left for Town and is also very useful in dead-ball situations.

Although the fee as been undisclosed by both clubs involved it is understood to be modified on the original deal with the Terriers paying nothing until Williams plays a certain number of matches.

With left back cover at a premium the Williams signing will be a tonic for both the defence and left side of midfield where he can also play. The manager has labelled Pontefract born Williams "just what we are looking for". For more statistics on the player's career including his 78-match spell at Oakwell click here.

Williams found first team matches at the South Yorkshire club a premium last season and spent a successful loan period with Blackpool helping them to play-off final success and scoring a stunning free-kick at Wembley.

Williams performed well on loan at Blackpool last season and becomes Ricthie's fourth summer signing.

Terriers fined for ill discipline!

Town are one of the 10 premier league and football league clubs to face the wrath of the authorities for poor discipline shown last season. Town have been fined £7,500 and given a suspended fine of £20,000 following a poor season last season under former manager Peter Jackson.

Town ended the season with 95 yellow cards and 8 red cards - 2 for former left back Danny Adams who is now playing for league two side Morecambe and was booked on the opening day of the season. Indeed poor discipline on the field was a characteristic of the Peter Jackson second era as manager.

2003/2004 - 98 yellow cards, 14 red cards
2004/2005 - 69 yellow cards, 6 red cards
2005/2006 - 74 yellow cards, 7 reds cards
2006/2007 - 95 yellow cards, 7 red cards

Total for the Jackson second stint at management of Huddersfield Town a near four season period ended with 336 yellow cards and 34 red cards in all competitions.

This is clearly something Andy Ritchie must put right however of the three matches played so far nothing much appears to have changed. In the Carling Cup Town had no cards shown but in the two league matches Frank Sinclair, Chris Brandon were shown yellow during the Yeovil victory and Jon Worthington and Joe Skarz saw yellow during last Saturday's 1-0 victory at Bournemouth.

If Town want to avoid having to pay the suspended sentence of £20,000 at the start of next season they will have to ensure that they improve the discipline on the field.

Akins scores in reserves point

The Terriers second string grabbed a point in their away match at Shrewsbury Town with Lucas Akins grabbing the Town goal. The draw follows an opening round victory over Tranmere Rovers.

Collins features in Irish Under 21 draw

Town midfielder 21 year old Michael Collins has made his predictable first apperance for the Ireland at Under 21 level as a half time substitute against Germany as the Irish drew 2-2 in Furth, Germany.

Ireland went a early goal behind but two goals from Wolves midfielder Stephen Gleeson put the Irish into the lead, but Germany grabbed a point with just 5 minutes remaining prevented an historic Ireland win.

Terriers maintain 100% League record

Match Result | AFC Bournemouth 0-1 Huddersfield Town | League 1 | Fitness First | Att: 5,606 | August 18, 2007

Luke Beckett's second goal of the season on 43 minutes was the difference between the two sides as Town continued their impressive form against Bournemouth and move to joint top of the League One table on 6 points - behind only Leyton Orient on goal difference.

For the second week running Town won 1-0 courtesy of a Beckett goal and for the second week running Matthew Glennon kept a clean sheet with only the midweek Carling Cup defeat to blot the impressive Town start. The Terriers make shift side held on for the three points despite missing the defensive duo of Frank Sinclair and David Mirfin and midfielder Danny Schofield - Malvin Karama took over as the makeshift striker with Andy Booth still only fit enough for the bench.

Town weathered the early and late storms forced onto them by a plucky home side, but it was Town through Beckett who broke the deadlock. Four minutes before the Town goal, Beckett had struck the base of the post with a powerful header but he did better on 43 minutes, when Matty Young floated in a free kick and the unmarked Beckett made no mistake from 6 yards out.

Town had the better of the majority of the second half and despite the occasionally chances for home striker and former Town target Jo Kuffour they had precious little as end product. But the Town 'keeper made a strong save late on as the Cherries tried to steal a point. Both Kamara and Jon Worthington had chances for Town well saved by the home 'keeper as Town had shape and composure during a better second half and tried to add to the Beckett goal.

"We have to make sure communication is better"

Andy Ritchie has pointed to improving team communication on the pitch as an improvement to Town despite seeing his side produce a 1-0 League One winning start yesterday. Town who dominated the first half having gone 1-0 inside the opening quarter of the game saw Yeovil Town come back into it in the second and it was the visitors who then dominated possession.

Ritchie was pleased with the way in which Luke Beckett took his goal and it was pleasing to see Andy Booth come on as a late substitute. Danny Cadamateri missed the game through injury, and Jon Worthington was not selected to start something that Ritchie will change on Tuesday evening at Blackpool.

Ritchie showed concern at the way his side hung on in the second half, and felt Town defended too deeply at times, but it's three points a decent start and as Ricthie says "something to build on". Nathan Clarke pleased his new manager with the way he handled the immense threat of Lloyd Owusu - who for once did not score against the Terriers.

Improvements Ritchie has identified following the 1-0 home victory:

- Improved defending and move up more
- Improved on the field communication
- Improved responses to tactical changes
- Kamara could have been more positive
- Collins could have got forward more

One thing that will shine brightly however for Ritchie is that for all Yeovil's second half possession they never really threatened an equaliser, and although Town did not have that many chances the one they did was clinically dispatched by Beckett who in those situations will score time and time again and during tight affairs like the opening match that is just what Beckett is required to do.

Opening day success for Town as Beckett off the mark

Match Result | Huddersfield Town 1-0 Yeovil Town | League 1 | Galpharm Stadium | Att: 9,876 | August 11, 2007

A Luke Beckett goal in 17 minutes was enough to give Town an opening day victory over Somerset visitors Yeovil Town, only the seventh time in 26 years have the Terriers won on the opening day of the season. It was an hard fought victory for the Terriers who hung in towards the end to hold on for a 1-0 win.

Frank Sinclair captained a side which included both Chris Brandon and Danny Schofield and it was there interchange that saw the latter float the ball over for Beckett to score the only goal of the match with a clinical headed finish from six yards. Up until that time it had been the visitors who had threatened to score, but Town defended well.

Following the Town goal it was all the home side for the remainder of the first half with Beckett having a couple of decent chances. In the second half it was Yeovil who came out the more hungrier but as the Somerset side attempted but failed to find decent efforts on goal the game became less balanced and disjointed and Town held on for only their seventh opening day victory in 26 years.

A late chance for Yeovil to secure a point and perhaps even more in a game that Town last season would so easily have rolled over in fell to Lloyd Owusu. Good work by former Terrier Marcus Stewart found the former Brentford and Sheffield Wednesday striker in space, but Owusu's tame shot went straight into the grateful arms of Town 'keeper Matt Glennon.

There is work to be done for Andy Ritchie and his coaching team, but will take positives out of a clean sheet and the way in which Town held on for three points against a tricky opponent. Whether the 'hanging on' was more about misjudgement from the visitors than the efforts of Town will be something the manager needs to work on and ensure they are firing on all cylinders come the visitor to Championship side Blackpool on Tuesday evening in the League Cup.

Collins in double Friday joy

Town hot prospect Michael Collins had double reason to smile today. The talented midfielder followed up his call up to the Republic of Ireland under 21 side by signing a contract extension with the Terriers. The under 21 is now contracted to the club until 2010 and he is now aiming to help Town to an opening day victory against Yeovil tomorrow.

Andy Ritchie who has only been at the club for a matter of four months as moved quickly to extend Collins' contract, as he knows he is hot property who is developing extremely well. Collins is set to start tomorrow's League One match alongside fellow former Town academy player Andy Holdsworth in midfield with club captain Jon Worthington on the bench.

Both Malvin Kamara and Danny Cadamateri will be given their Town debuts with Chris Brandon getting the nod at left wing over Danny Schofield. Striker Andy Booth is the only injury doubt for tomorrow despite him returning to training. Nathan Clarke is set to captain the side tomorrow and joining him in defence will be David Mifrin, Frank Sinclair and Joe Skarz. Luke Beckett will partner Cadamateri in attack.

Referee for tomorrow is card happy Darren Drysdale, who officiated three town matches last season. Drysdale's record of 59 yellow cards and 5 red from his 19 matches will be a worry for Andy Ritchie who is looking to drastically improve Town's poor disciplinary record from last season which saw Town pick up 82 yellow cards and 8 red cards.

Performances against Yeovil in 2006/2007

Home: Lost 2-3 (16/09/06)

Away: Lost 1-3 (05/01/07)

Yeovil Town finished a credible 5th last season and lost to Blackpool in the play-off final having disposed of Nottingham Forest in the semi-final, following a spectacular turn around in the second leg at the City Ground.

History is also in favour of tomorrow's visitors. Yeovil have won four of the six meetings (including the double last season) to Town's two with the Somerset side having the better of the goal difference. In Huddersfield Yeovil have secured 2 wins to the Terriers 1. Therefore an opening day victory for Town against a side that will feature former Town great Marcus Stewart is on the cards, with the club knowing that they "owe them one", after the hurt of the two defeats last season.

Thumping victory signals pre-season end!

Match Result | Mansfield Town 0-4 Huddersfield Town | Pre-Season Friendly | Field Mill | Att: 1,363 | August 04, 2007

Huddersfield Town end their pre-season campaign with an excellent victory at Mansfield Town and ensured supporters go into the new League One season with increased optimism. Two decent performances in a week, which yielded two very good results have left the club excited and ready for next Saturday's opening League Match with Russell Slade's Yeovil Town at the Galpharm Stadium.

The home side who have beaten Premiership Derby County in pre-season fielded former Terriers Martin McIntosh and John McAliskey in their starting line-up, and it would be the big Scottish defender who would have one of the best efforts for the home side in the first half which Town 'keeper Matthew Glennon would do well to push away. McAliskey also had a chance just before Beckett's opening goal on 22.

A bright start to the match at Field Mill in which both sides had chances to open the scoring indeed Luke Beckett thought he had opening the scoring inside 10 minutes but his 'goal' was claimed by the match referee not to have crossed the line. But the inform Beckett who has scored an hat-full of goals in pre-season did not have long to wait for his goal and the games opening goal on 23 minutes. Moments later Glennon made an excellent save to deny the home side grabbing an equaliser

To be fair, the home side had had a decent first half and had a number of decent efforts, forcing Glennon into a number of smart saves to keep his clean sheet intact. If Town leading looked a bit harsh on the home side, Michael Collins second was very harsh. Having had a 'goal' ruled out for off-side Collins added Town's second on 38 minutes and that is how the scoring remained until half time.

Following the restart Billy Dearden's men again came out all guns blazing and the impressive former Aston Villa striker Michael Boulding had yet another effort on goal. The game was made safe for Andy Ritchie's visitors as second half substitute Lucas Atkins scored his first senior Town goal on 60 minutes just minutes of having entered the field of play.

Town through Marvin Kamara added a fourth goal with 16 minutes remaining and only desperate home defending prevented a late fifth goal as Town threatened to run riot with minutes remaining.

Town's travelling army will have been as delighted as manager Andy Ritchie and his coaching staff following this positive performance and clean sheet with Ritchie pointing to the way in which the first team has finished pre-season as confidence boosting.

Now the hard work begins again in the following week up to the big kick-off at 15:00 on Saturday August 11. The Galpharm Stadium which should be bathed in sunshine will be filled with expectant Town fans hoping to start the season off with a victory. Ritchie, his management team and the players must do their preparations well in the next week, as the positive end to pre-season will not mean a great deal if they lose against Yeovil Town next weekend.

2003/2004 play off final repeat!

Huddersfield Town make the short journey to face League Two Mansfield Town this afternoon with manager Andy Ritchie looking for the same performance that beat Blackburn 2-1 rather than a repeat of last Saturday's debacle.

In what is effectively the final pre-season contest before the start of the season next Saturday, Ritchie will be fully aware of the challenge Town's opponents this afternoon will fare, given they have beaten Premiership Derby County 2-0 this pre-season.

The match is a repeat of the epic 2003/2004 play-off final which the Terriers won on penalties under the second Peter Jackson era in Cardiff.
