Jackson targets home victory

Manager Peter Jackson is looking forward to the home tie with AFC Bournemouth this afternoon as they look to convert their recent away form into home form.

The Terriers have picked up a valuable four points from two tough away games in a week and will be looking to end a run of three league matches at the Galpharm Stadium without a victory by giving the managerless visitors a even longer trip back home.

Bournemouth set part with their long time manager Sean O'Driscoll recently and the South coast club is beginning interviewing possible candidates to take the role on at Dean Court. Jackson is confidence of reversing the Yeovil Town defeat at home by beating the Cherries this afternoon but know that with the likes of James Hayter in the opponents lineup it will not be an easy task.

The Terriers will welcome back former midfielder Marcus Browning to Huddersfield, whilst once Town target James Hayter will be the key man for them looking to add to his 4 goals this season. Former England midfielder Darren Anderton looks likely to miss the clash in Yorkshire through injury

Jackson to be forced into changes?

Peter Jackson is likely to have to make at least one change to the side that drew 2-2 at Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday night with left winger Danny Schofield struggling with the groin injury which forced him off after just 29 minutes of the Tuesday night match.

He could be replaced by Matt Young who replaced him in midweek although Jackson may opt for the experience of Chris Brandon who has returned to fitness following playing the full 90 minutes of the midweek reserves loss at home against West Brom.

Brandon is likely to play some part in the contest this afternoon as Jackson prepares for the interestingly set West Yorkshire derby with Bradford City next Saturday. If Jackson starts with 20 year old Matt Young it would be only his second full start.

Back in contention for a starting place is Nathan Clarke. Clarke was left out of the reserves clash in midweek and was on the bench at Tranmere. But with David Mirfin struggling Clarke may get to partner captain Martin McIntosh in the centre of Town's defence.

McIntosh will keep the captain's armband unless club captain Jon Worthington returns to the centre of midfield. Worthington came through 70 minutes of the reserves tie with West Brom following an hernia operation that has kept him out of action since August. If fit he is likely to start on the bench, but should he start Tom Clarke or Michael Collins will make way for him.

The match as come a week early for Adnan Ahmed who is back to fitness and took part for 45 minutes for the reserves. The injury list at Town which looked at one point to be increasing in magnitude over the recent few months looks to be having some relief at the moment, with only David Mirfin from the previously match fit players struggling to make this afternoon's clash

25 years since the passing of a great name!

It is 25 years today since the passing of former Town and Liverpool manager Bill Shankly. The fitness fanatic Scot was brought to Leeds Road (which would later see it's boot room renamed the 'Shankly Boot Room') by friend and then Town manager Andy Beattie.

Shakly came to Huddersfield in 1955 to coach the reserves side but following the resignation of first team manager Beattie, 'Shanks' was promoted to first team manager in November 1956 just 11 months after joining the Town. Town had been relegated the previous season and many of Shankly's reserve squad found themselves playing first team football.

In December 1956 Shankly gave a debut to another famous name connected with Huddersfield Town - Denis Law. Law a Scottish born striker had been spotted by the first team management and Shankly promptly gave Law his debut.

Due to increasing frustrations with the Town board who constantly wanted Shankly to sell the better players (including Ray Wilson) Shankly found it necessary to end his four year association with the club he joined from Workington Town to leave for the glory heights of Liverpool. After 129 matches with 49 victories, Shankly decided to move on.

Ron Yeats and Ian St John two players Shankly wanted to purchase for Town were quickly bought up at Anfield where Shankly would manage for 15 years winning three first division championships, two FA Cups and the Uefa Cup in 1973 - beginning the living legend of Liverpool FC. He was so loved on Merseyside that they named the famous Anfield Gates after him, and in 1997 erected a bronze statute of their former great manager - of which must surely move with the Reds when they move to their new stadium.

Shankly who knew how to get the best from his players and was renowned for his motivational abilities once said a quote which as long lived with football supporters through the years:

"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."

The rest as they say is history!

Result: Tranmere Rovers 2 (2)-(0) 2 Huddersfield Town, Coca-Cola League One, 6,702

A stunning fightback saw Town come back from 2-0 down at half time to draw 2-2 against Tranmere Rovers who could have gone top of the league.

Prenton Park is never the best of hunting grounds for the Terriers and after conceding yet another early goal on their travels the writing looked to be on the wall for another disappointing result. Following the Calvin Zola 10th minute strike, Tranmere put Town on the back foot and with Chris Shuker causing the Terriers all kinds of problems it looked only time Rovers would score a second.

The second came on 37 minutes through Chris Greenacre again the former Barnsley man Shuker was involved in the build up. The home side thought that they had gone 3-0 up just before half-time but the goal was chalked off for offside.

Que the half time team talk, que the fightback!

His passion may have wandered in recent weeks but whatever Peter Jackson said to his players during the half time break it had the desired effect, because the Town side in the second half was a totally different outfit, and took the game to Tranmere and dominated the second half.

Jackson changed to formation to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation bringing on Pawel Abbott for Tom Clarke. But it was the lively Shuker who almost put the game to bed with a rasping drive that hit the Town post. If the home support felt that Tranmere was going to run away with this game, seconds later they were made to think again.

Having twice survived going 3-0 behind, just before and just after half time, Andy Booth scored his first goal of the season prodding home after Tranmere 'keeper Gaving Ward had fumbled Matthew Young's cross. Perhaps not one of Booth's more conventional goals, but enough to put him third top goalscorer in Town's history with 126 goals in all competitions.

The game opened up more, and the Terriers looked more like the side that defeated Swansea at the Liberty Stadium at the weekend. Matthew Glennon made a couple of smart saves to prevent a third Rovers goal, but it was the away support that would welcome the game's fourth goal on 78 minutes.

With just 12 minutes remaining of a pulsating game inform Gary Taylor-Fletcher secured a point for Town with his seventh goal of the season. Rampant Town almost grabbed the lead their second half performance deserved but substitute Luke Beckett denied Beckett.

Result: Swansea City 1 (0)-(0) 2 Huddersfield Town, Coca-Cola League One, 12,202

Town successfully ended a barren run with their first league win in seven matches. It came courtesy of two Gary Taylor-Fletcher goals. A late flurry from the home side which resulted in former Town striker Leon Knight grabbing a lifeline, could not prevent the Terriers travelling back to West Yorkshire with all three points.

Under fire manager Peter Jackson made a change to the formation. Jackson opted for a 4-5-1 with a return to the starting lineup for Martin McIntosh and Andy Holdsworth. Tom Clarke moved into midfield to make room for the fit again Holdsworth whilst Andy Booth was a lone striker for the Terriers with both Pawel Abbott and Luke Beckett on the bench.

It was a solid victory for Town, as they put to bed the disappointing defeat last week and the supporter protest that endured after the match. Town deserved the victory and held on after Knight's 6th goal of the season following two goals from Taylor-Fletcher on 50 and 60 minutes. Taylor-Fletcher is now the Terriers leading scorer with 6 goals.

Fletch's first came after a good interchange with Mark Hudson to beat the Swans 'keeper from close range. The second on the hour mark was equally well constructed by the rejuvenated Terriers. Town broke and it was Danny Schofield clever through ball which spilt the home defence. Fletch outpaced the defenders before side-footing Town into a two-goal advantage to stun the home crowd.

Swansea pulled one back, but Andy Booth almost scored a late third as Town held firm with the five minutes of injury time played. But to be fair to the Terriers the Swans never threatened and never looked like scoring until nine minutes from the end when the diminutive Leon Knight, does what he does best and scored a clinical goal from nothing.

A good response to Jackson's midweek plea for the club to stick together and the performance and the manner of the Town boss Peter Jackson was in total contrast to the last seven days. A torrid time for all connected with the club follow the indifferent start to the season and with fans barracking the board last week, this victory will offer some relief to everyone at the Galpharm Stadium.

Jackson felt that his side played well under the pressure and he said he was "proud" of the manner of the victory over tough opponents. In another strange Jackson move Martin McIntosh was made captain following his return from loan at Grimsby Town in midweek following the injury to Nathan Clarke.

Jackson wanted all his players to take credit from the performance. Jackson confirmed that double-goal Taylor-Fletcher was brought off with 20 minutes to go as he was feeling sick. Jackson also gave credit to Tom Clarke who he pushed up into midfield and performed well.

They now need to follow the up on Tuesday night at Prenton Park to face second placed Tranmere Rovers. Jackson said he and his players are looking forward to the trip to the Wirral to face Ronnie Moore's pace-setters who drew with leaders Nottingham Forest 0-0 at home today.

One back, one out!

Martin McIntosh has returned to the Galpharm Stadium after his loan deal at League One side Grimsby Town expired. It is thought that the Mariners had wanted to keep the 35-year old Scottish born defender but with injuries and pressure mounting on Peter Jackson he choose to bring back the player ahead of the difficult trip to Swansea City.

Meanwhile young striker John McAliskey has joined League Two side Wrexham and played their Carling Cup defeat match at St Andrews. The Welsh side lost 4-1 after extra time, and McAliskey played for 120 minutes before coming off.

Town fans are reminded that tomorrow's match is all ticket, whilst Tuesday's trip to high flying Tranmere Rovers is pay on the day

Jackson issues "stick together" plea

Having seen their side's indifferent form around 100 Town fans staged a protest after last Saturday's match with Yeovil Town. The Terriers lost that home match 3-2 with the Town supporters not tasting a victory in 6 league matches (7 including the 2-0 Mansfield Town cup defeat).

The protest is said to have been against the board but Jackson vehemently supported his board saying that the "buck stops with me"

Result: Cheltenham Town 2 (1)-(0) 1 Huddersfield Town, Whaddon Road, Coca-Cola League One, 3,720

Huddersfield Town's poor away form and form against Cheltenham Town continued as they went down 2-1 at Whaddon Road. Despite a host of chances it was the home side that went into a commanding lead after an early opener. Town threatened a storming finishing with Pawel Abbott giving the Terriers hope with four minutes to go.

There was a change in formation for the Terriers ravaged by injury. But the enterprising looking 4-1-2-3 formation was quickly on the back foot after Grant McCann (who enjoys scoring against Town) scored his fourth of the season on 10 minutes. A lovely pass from Kayode Odejayi opened up the Town defence which the Northern Ireland international made no mistake in executing a fine drive past Matthew Glennon.

The home side had the ball in the net on 23 minutes but the referee disallowed the 'goal' for offside, as they threatened to rub salt into the Town wounds. Danny Schofield replaced Matthew Young at half time on the left of midfield, a midfield that contained Michael Collins who overcame injury to start the match.

Town pushed the home side back for the first 15 minutes of the second half but despite an host of chances could not find the equalising goal. Perhaps an away goal at that time would have secured more later on. It was the home side that doubled it's lead on 71 minutes. Former Town defender Craig Armstrong went on a positive attacking run, the ball eventually found it's way to John Melligan who made no mistake to put John Ward's team in command.

Straight after the goal Peter Jackson brought on Pawel Abbott for Luke Beckett and despite Cheltenham pressure for the five minutes after the Town change, it would prove the catalyst for a Town fightback.

On 77 minutes Abbott broke clear and put a shot just wide of the goal, but nine minutes later a Gary Taylor-Fletcher pass found Abbott clean through who went round the impressive Cheltenham goalkeeper to give the travelling Town support a lifeline. Deppe into injury Mark Hudson should have levelled the matters for Town but he dragged his shot wide when it was easier to score.

At the moment the Hudson finish is weighing up the Town season so far, and the away form is alarmingly inept. Jackson changed the shape at half-time which gave the Terriers enough to get at the home side and attack from the beginning. More of that type of pressure is required, but the side need to turn pressure into goals.

Despite the result the Town boss felt that they had done enough to win the match, but he continues to be disappointed with the soft goals Town are conceding. Town are conceding goals which will give Jackson a worry ahead of the Yorkshire derby on Tuesday night, but he did give Abbott praise for a fine finish that brought Town back into the match.

John Ward was very pleased with the manner of his Cheltenham side's performance and victory but gave credit to Town saying that Jackson's side will be "put there at the end of the season". He was thankful to see Hudson miss the chance when he felt the Terriers would equalise.

Terriers ravaged with injuries

Peter Jackson's injury headache seems to be growing and growing at the moment with Andy Holdsworth the latest player to be struck down. With Jackson preparing his side for a tough away match at Cheltenham he now has 6 injured players two of which are defenders. Town will be looking to secure their first victory against Cheltenham and a first clean sheet at Whaddon Road.

Holdsworth is ill with shingles, whilst fellow defender John McCombe has hurt his toe. That is further impacted with central defender Martin McIntosh out on loan at Grimsby Town.

Midfield quartet of captain Jon Worthington, Michael Collins, Adnan Ahmed and Chris Brandon are also all missing for the eighth league match of the season with John Ward's side at Whaddon Road.

Jackson who is looking for his side to bounce back after a disappointing 2-0 defeat last Saturday at Crewe has said that all his fit players will travel to the West Country for the match. The defensive injuries could mean that Tom Clarke could partner brother Nathan in the centre of defence with David Mirfin moving to right back. Jackson could also start James Hand or Aaron Hardy in the centre of midfield following the illness of Collins.

Town fans will want reminding of the last time the two sides met. It was on the final day of the 2003/2004 season when a victory would have been enough to send Town up. It was all going to plan when Andy Booth scored to send the travelling army of Town fans into delight. But with 15 minutes remaining a poor Pawel Abbott back pass enabled Cheltenham to equalise and put Town into the play-offs - which proved fruitful for the Terriers in Cardiff!

Of the four matches played to date there have been three draws and a defeat. Two matches came in the 2002/2003 season the next two in the Terriers promotion season of 2003/2004. The only non-draw came at Whaddon Road in November 2002. A Paul Brayson goal on 71 minutes was enough to give the Gloucestershire side the lead.

At Huddersfield there have been two matches. One a six-goal draw the other a no-score draw. In February 2003 Town drew 3-3 with Cheltenham. The visitors went into two goal lead just before half time. But a pulsating Town fightback 14 minutes after halftime had turned the match around with the Terriers leading 3-2 but a Grant McCann second made it 3-3

-

Jacko going nowhere!

The circling rumours surrounding Huddersfield Town boss Peter Jackson have proved unfounded as Jackson remains the Town boss. Some Doncaster Rovers websites had touted that Rovers were ready to launch a bid for the Town manager.

However, Doncaster have appointed Bournemouth manager Sean O'Driscoll as their new manager following the departure of Dave Penney. O'Driscoll ends a 23 year association with the Cherries to move up to South Yorkshire. It was muted that Jackson was on the 3-man short list for the vacant Doncaster position, with one Rovers website even claiming that Jackson was interested in the job.

Brighton are looking for a new manager after they parted company with manager Mark McGee. The Seagulls kept faith with McGee following last season's relegation from the Championship but have struggled so far this season in League One and are currently in 17th position with just two victories.

In last night's League One action Tranmere Rovers kept up their early season form with a 1-0 home victory over Bristol City. That victory courtesy of an 85 minute strike moves Ronnie Moore's side into second place level on 16 points with leaders Nottingham Forest

Reserves win point

The Town reserves through goals from James Hand and John McAliskey achieved a draw in their recent Pontins League match with Birmingham City.

The Town side put in an decent performance but had to come from behind before snatching the lead. Hand scored the equaliser on 38 minutes and 14 minutes after half time McAliskey put Town in the lead. It looked like the Terriers would be travelling back to Yorkshire with all three points before City scored a late equaliser.

Pawel Abbott who featured in this match with a young side has staked his claim for a return to the starting lineup having missed the 2-0 defeat at Crewe on Saturday

-

"No more cash" says Jackson

Town boss Peter Jackson has said he is happy with his current squad and the backing he is receiving from the club after stating that he has no more money for player purchases. The August 31st transfer window came and went with no involvement from the Terriers and Jackson will need to motivate his current squad after a stuttering start to the new campaign.

Jackson knew at the start of the season money would be tight, nothing as changed as the Terriers stick to a budget to maintain the balance sheet

-

Tosh to return as pressure mounts on defence

Big central defender Martin McIntosh will be back at the Galpharm Stadium as soon as his loan deal at Grimsby Town on Saturday. Manager Peter Jackson cannot wait until September 17th to welcome the big Scot back to Yorkshire.

With the Town defence struggling for form, clean sheets and ravished by injuries the form of McIntosh since joining the Mariners on loan to gain match fitness has pleased the Huddersfield boss.

In the four matches since McIntosh was allowed to go out on loan the Terriers have drawn 2 and lost 2 and in that time conceding seven goals. Jackson was highly critical of the defence during the 2-0 defeat at Crewe Alexandra last Saturday and is keen to get back the immense presence of McIntosh who can also score goals.

McIntosh who has played three matches for Grimsby must have thought his Town career could have been at an end after Jackson allowed him to go out on loan following a disappointing showing for the defender during the 2-1 defeat at Gillingham on the opening day of the season.

Town have a difficult trip to make this Saturday to Cheltenham then face two tough home matches against Doncaster Rovers and Yeovil Town. The news of McIntosh's recall will delight the Town fans who are dreaming of a defence with composure, togetherness and understanding as Jackson aims for only the second clean sheet of the season
