Result: Swansea City 2-2 Huddersfield Town Huddersfield Town are up to second in the League One table after a battling draw at the Liberty Stadium. Fellow promotion hopefuls Swansea City went in at half time 2-0 and despite the home side starting the better in the second half, goals from Martin McIntosh and David Graham grabbed Town a point. It was a wonderful advertisement for League One football, with both teams playing excellent enjoyable football at a terrific pace throughout the 90 minutes in South Wales. At 2-0 down, Graham's trickery won Town a penalty but Chris Brandon missed it. Top scorer Pawel Abbott was missing from the squad due to a back injury. The match was beamed live on SKY was started well by the visitors who could have scored in the opening minutes of play, as Chris Brandon almost slipped through. But Swansea star man Lee Trundle (who signed a new contract before the match) showed his strength to wriggle through to slip in the Swans opener on 19 minutes. That came moments after the outstanding Phil Senior made his first of many excellent saves from Trundle's effort. A quick throw-in caught the Town defence napping and the impressive Leon Britton doubled the Welshmen's lead just before the break. It was poor defending from the Terriers and it is something that is costing the team unnecessary goals. Before the Swansea second goal, they had had numerous chances to double the lead. Former Swindon Town man Rory Fallon guilty of heading over when he could have scored (he also placed a shot over in the second half from 6-yards out when well placed) and Garry Monk was denied by an instinctive save from Senior. Swansea threatened to run riot at the start of the second half, but Town stood strong as Britton and Monk had decent efforts to score the third Swansea goal of the evening. Town with their first advancement in attack saw Swans 'keeper Willy Gueret flick over Town striker Graham and a penalty was awarded. Brandon crashed his effort against the bar and saw it bounce agonisingly on the line. That brought great cheers of relief from the home support, and a wry smile from French goalkeeper Willy Gueret who protested his innocence and claimed he never touched the marauding Town striker. It was Graham who almost score Town's opener on 54 minutes but saw his effort well stopped. The Terriers perhaps should have had a second penalty when Schofield's cross appeared to strike the hand of a Swansea City defender. Despite Town's claims, the referee waved play-on. But the Town spirit and desire was evident and they went for the lifeline. That came on 70 minutes. Martin McIntosh who headed home his third goal of the season met a delicate sweeping corner at the far post. It was a stylish header from the Tosh who played well at the heart of the Town defence. The Scottish born defender rising unmarked to head home Town's first goal. Tosh then set-up striker Andy Booth who failed to control his shot. As the game wore on it only looked like the Terriers who score the next goal. And so it was. Substitute John McAliskey could have scored Town's equaliser but could not get the ball from under his feet to find the power and was well tackled in the end by a Swans defender, but it was fellow substitute Danny Schofield who was causing Swansea the problems. Just before Town's equaliser Robinson placed a lovely long-range effort onto the top of the bar. It perhaps deserved more, luckily for Town it hit the frame of the goal. It was Schofield's low centre, which found Graham who had ghosted in to the are, he stroked home the ball for his fourth Town goal in six matches, which silenced the previously noisy home support ending their jibes at Town manager Peter Jackson and ended their "Easy, Easy!" chanting. It then looked like only Town was playing the enterprising football and looking for the victory. Schofield who was playing well and pulling the strings floated in close to goal, but the home defence did well to clear. With minutes remaining of the contest the lively McAliskey could have secured all three points for the Yorkshiremen, but his header did not have the power to beat Gueret in the Swansea City goal. It was a stunning fight-back from the Terriers who could have been a number of goals behind before the first goal for Town. The Terriers defence looked shaky against Swansea's quick attacking play which entangled with plenty of power and effort. Britton, Kevin McLeod, Trundle and Andy Robinson who caused the problems, carving Town open time and time again. But in an amazing contest after Town drew level it was the home side that was left hanging on for a point. Town let Swansea have too much dictation of the play in the first half and for the first five minutes of the second half, but after the missed penalty, Town played more like the promotion causing side they are and caused enough problems to put themselves into a match winning position. Manager Peter Jackson wanted his side to play well and go out for a win. For 50 minutes they were very much second best, but for the final quarter of the match could have won it. Jackson was incensed with the ball-boys at the Liberty Stadium, who time and time again thwarted a quick Town move by throwing on an additional ball. Once the referee had stopped that little action from the home side, the speed of the Swansea City play had gone, and Town found the rhythm. As expected Town manager Peter Jackson - who was abused by the City fans throughout the match - commended the attitude and spirit of his players. Jackson maintained the same side that beat Milton Keynes Dons 5-0 last weekend, but changed it to a 4-3-3 formation towards the middle of the second half. Jackson agreed that Town should have been more down at half time and pointed to his 'keeper Phil Senior for some "outstanding saves" that kept the Terriers in the match. But as Jackson rightly says there are not many teams who will come back from 2-0 down, being totally dominated then almost force the win itself. That is credit to the spirit that Jackson has in his young team. It was some inspired substitutions that changed the game in favour of Town. At half-time Jackson brought on Schofield and Andy Holdsworth for Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Michel Collins, then just before the second Town goal John McAliskey came on for Jon Worthington. Result: Huddersfield Town 5-0 Milton Keynes Dons A five-star performance over bottom club Milton Keynes ensured that the Terriers promotion campaign was put well back on track with three wins from three in the last week and no goals conceded. A stunning first half showing from Terriers left the visitors floundering and in the end Town turned on the style as they ran riot. Clinical Town finishing left a delighted Town boss Peter Jackson stating that Town was "due a win like that". They scored five goals in a match for the first time since a 5-3 victory over Stockport County in March 2005 - a match which had five different goalscorers for the Terriers. It was also the biggest margin of victory for a league match since Town beat Crystal Palace 7-1 at home in August 2000. Town promotion rivals Swansea City on Friday at the Liberty Stadium in a match that will test both clubs promotion credentials - but it does look like Town are coming good at the right time. Town never looked back after the opening attack when influential Chris Brandon had a speculative strike from distance. Although it flew over the bar and would have had fans wondering if it was going to be one of those games, those fears were doused when Martin McIntosh's well-executed volley on 19 minutes opened the scoring. David Graham and Jon Worthington were involved in the build up for McIntosh's first league goal since the late equaliser against Scunthorpe United and for his first at home. Moments later and Town was two up. Again some excellent interplay in the build up led to an exquisite centre by Dan Smith and Gary Taylor-Fletcher who is impressing as every game goes on, came from the right to clinically head home. Captain Jon Worthington scored for the second time in a week on 36 minutes. Fletcher-Taylor's through ball met the advancing Graham who placed a well judged pass to Worthington who slipped the ball into the back of the unguarded net. It was nothing more than the dominant, rampant Terriers deserved. They were playing some wonderful passing football and opened up the poor visitors at will. Indeed Andy Booth could have scored just before the half hour mark after he connected with Taylor-Flecther. Graham also missed the simplest of chances just before half time, putting his shot wide. Town had to wait until 13 minutes from time to register their fourth goal of the afternoon despite controlling the game against Danny Wilson's side. It came from defender David Mirfin. Substitute Danny Schofield's corner was flicked on by McIntosh where his colleague defender tipped home the ball. Town scored five goals in the league for the fist time since October 2001, with seconds remaining as the improving Michael Collins scored his first goal for Town. Once again some neat interplay saw start man Brandon and Schofield connect to supply Collins with the ball who made no mistake in scoring the fifth goal of the game. Phil Senior a virtual spectator for much of the game, kept his third clean sheet of the week and will continue to keep out Paul Rachbuka. So a 5 goal thrashing of MK Dons could be just what everyone connected with Huddersfield Town needed. It goes without saying that the 2-0 lead thrown away in the away fixture in Milton Keynes was the catalyst for the sticking spell Town have gone through, but lets hope that is now behind the club and they can go onwards and upwards and gain promotion their football at so many times this season deserves. Teams: Huddersfield: Senior, Mirfin, Nathan Clarke, McIntosh, Smith, Taylor-Fletcher (Schofield 45), Worthington (Holdsworth 79), Collins, Brandon, Graham, Booth (Abbott 81). Subs Not Used: Rachubka, Tom Clarke Booked: Smith, Worthington. Goals: McIntosh 19, Taylor-Fletcher 24, Worthington 36, Mirfin 77, Collins 90. Result: Huddersfield Town 2-0 Colchester United Goals from Jon Worthington (14) and David Graham (68) gives Town the victory at the Galpharm Stadium over inform Colchester United. For the second successive match, Town's opponents saw a man sent off, this time it was Garry Richards on 49 minutes for a foul on Graham. Town ended Colchester remarkable club record running run that catapulted them up the table, but the visitors gave an excellent account of themselves and especially in the first half found the luck against them - they hit the post on 3 minutes. Phil Parkinson's second placed side went on to dominate the first half but it was nervous Town that took the lead. But Town could have scored on 10 minutes when Nathan Clarke went narrowly wide with an header. On 14 minutes Jon Worthington deflected in a Gary Taylor-Flecther shot, but despite the lead Town remained cagey and Phil Senior was forced into a number of excellent saves, as Town defended deeply against the fluid attack minded visiting outfit. Richard Garcia's mazey and intelligent forward play caused Town all shorts of problems, but the Australian found Senior in cracking form in Town's goal and as the game drifted towards half-time it looked only a matter of time until the visitors would equalise. Colchester United must have been wondering how they went in at half time losing after having plenty of chances and hitting the woodwork. In the second half the sending off changed the game. Town striker David Graham was brought down by Richards who was shown the straight red card (the only card of the match) and it was time for Town to create chances and hold possession as the visitors failed to recreate the attacking flow of the first half. Graham doubled Town's lead on 68 minutes. Big striker Andy Booth put him through on goal and the on-loan Sheffield Wednesday striker put the ball passed Adian Davidson in the U's goal for his third goal in Terriers colours, when through one-one-one with he former Bradford City stopper. Colchester also had two goals ruled out. One for offside the other for a foul, both came from 16 goal leading goalscorer Chris Iwelumo. Town will need to use this victory to kick-start their promotion campaign after this narrow victory kept them in the hunt for promotion. Town rode their luck in the game and had to defend eight corners, but it is goals that win football matches, and it was Town who scored twice without reply. Peter Jackson made a number of changes to the starting line-up from the one that was beaten at Tranmere Rovers last Friday evening. David Mirfin returned to the defence in place of Andy Holdsworth who was suspended. Chris Brandon returned to the left side of midfield. Danny Schofield was on the bench after illness and Andy Booth replaced Pawel Abbott in the starting line up, Abbott dropped to the bench. Once again Phil Senior continued in the goal with American born Paul Rachbuka on the bench. This will perhaps feel a little like payback for Town from last season when United's late equaliser (in injury time) ended Town's winning ways and ultimately stopped Town from getting into last season's play-off's by a single point. Jackson called this a big "three points" but he is aiming for all three against Blackpool (away) on Tuesday evening. He felt that David Graham and Gary Taylor-Flecther had excellent matches, and said that he continues to be in discussion with Danny Schofield over a new contract. Jackson also pointed to the bit of luck his side had in the first half as a measure of his side's victory. The decent Galpharm Stadium crowd was the fourth highest for the season. It was also the first match in which the re-branded away stand was occupied. Teams: Huddersfield: Senior, Mirfin, Nathan Clarke, McIntosh, Smith, Worthington, Taylor-Fletcher, Collins, Brandon, Booth, Graham. Subs Not Used: Rachubka, Abbott, Schofield, Ahmed, Tom Clarke Goals: Worthington 14, Graham 68 Colchester: Davison, Halford, Duguid, Brown, White (Elokobi 87), Danns, Watson, Yeates (Baldwin 54), Richards, Iwelumo, Garcia (Williams 77). Subs Not Used: Gerken, King. Sent Off: Richards (50). Stats: Ball Possession: Town: 53%, Colchester: 47% - South Stand in re-brand! KSDL (owners of the Galpharm Stadium) today announced that the South Stand of the Galpharm Stadium as received new sponsorship and will now be known as "The Pink Link" stand. The stand, more commonly referred to as the 'away end' or the 'scoreboard end' was previously known as the "TravelWorld" Stand a former company of Terry Fisher - a past Town Chairman. This sponsorship further illustrates Town commitment to Yorkshire companies. The Pink Link is a Yorkshire based transportation company and has purchased the naming rights to the South Stand for five years. Stadium Managing Director Ralph Rimmer said of the sponsorship deal "We are very excited ... we are looking to build a long lasting relationship". The Pink Link have also spoke of the benefits to them of achieving this "unique" marketing opportunity. Established in 1981, The Pink Link are based at Netherton and is a family company. Evans forced to quite game Former Town left-back Gareth Evans (24) ha been forced to quit the game through injury. It is a serious knee injury which has forced him to quit, and Blackpool officials are unsure whether or not it will stand up to the pressures of non-league football. Result: Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Huddersfield Town David Graham's second goal in his second Town appearance was not enough for Town to defeat Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park. Town fought back from a goal down at half time to level only to concede with 6 minutes remaining. Town went behind after just four minutes when Carl Tremarco put the home side into the lead. The game turned tasty on 20 minutes when Tranmere player Calvin Zola was shown a straight red card for a studs showing tackle on Town midfielder Michale Collins. Then within the space of five minutes a player from either side made their way into the book. After the break Town brought on Andy Booth, who returned from injury in place of Pawel Abbot. Immediately the big man's presence made the change for Peter Jackson's side. Just three minutes into the second half David Graham equalised for the Terriers. With the blue and white army pumped up and being backed by a noisy Town support in a crowd of 8,300 Town went for the winner. But no matter what they threw at the 10-men on Tranmere Rovers 'keeper Dino Seremet. But you could sense a third goal in the match, and it was the home side who grabbed it. Former Town striker Delroy Facey charge through a breakaway chance for Rovers and he drilled the ball passed Phil Senior, who for the second time in a week conceded two goals, but made some excellent saves as well. An underlying note from the match was a fifth yellow card for the season of Andy Holdsworth he will miss next Saturday's match at the Galpharm Stadium against high-flying Colchester United. The Town defeat was further impacted with news that Swansea City had beaten Bournemouth 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium to move into second place. Peter Jackson was delighted that the return from injury of Andy Booth gave his side the lift to get back into the game at 1-1. However he was disappointed with the bad start and that Town lost the match. He felt at 1-1 Town was the only side going to win it. Jackson also felt the referee made the correct decision in the red card for Rovers Congo striker Calvin Zola. Improving Tranmere who scored their first goals in four matches (after successive 0-0 draws) to record their first win since January 2nd. It moved Brian Little's side up to 11th in the league table, but the Wirral side had onloan Luton goalkeeper Dino Seremet to thank after Town upped the pace in the second half. The Slovenian was in inspired form preventing Town from taking the 2-1 advantage and late in the match from equalising a second time. Little was worried about the possession Town had, but felt his players worked hard for the victory. He was delighted that one of his subsitions in Delroy Facey paid off, and also agreed with Peter Jackson that referee Howard Webb was correct to send off Rovers player Zola on 20 minutes. The game on February 21 will pit the under-21 from the English Football League against their Italian counterparts. Taylor will whittle the squad down to 16 for the match, but Holdsworth's selection hallmarks the excellent season and prospects the academy product is - Hudson and Booth out for Friday Mark Hudson is a major doubt for the tricky trip to the Wirall on Friday evening. Hudson who was a second half substitution against Oldham Athletic on Saturday lasted just 25 minutes before picking up an injury. Although Andy Booth is stepping up his training from injury and manager Peter Jackson is hopeful that he can include his big striker, Booth looks also highly unlikely to be fit to face Tranmere Rovers on Friday evening - January 2006 news archived |
