Result: Huddersfield Town 1-0 Tranmere Rovers

For the second home game on the trot Huddersfield Town left it late to secure victory at the Galpharm Stadium. With Peter Jackson's side looking to keep up the pace with Swansea City and Southend United the 87 minute winner from Danny Schofield came as great news for the manager.

After missing a first half penalty through Pawel Abbott, it threatened to be 'one of those nights' for Town who perhaps deserved all three points after dominating an entertaining tie with Rovers and gleaming Terriers boss beamed "don't write us off".

Jackson was delighted with the way his side kept battling until the final whistle and shows how improved his side are from last season. Jackson was also happy with the clean sheet, the second of the month and was happy with his defence and goalkeeper.

It is the third time this season Town have produced a victory in the closing minutes of a match (all coming at home), which is a massive indication of the improvement in Town this season, which has Jackson believing they are playing some "very good football" at the moment.

The Terriers have now scored in the last 21 league matches and are playing some entertaining football, as the League One top three open up a five point gap on fourth place. The goal when it came was a sweet one from Schofield who ghosted into the Tranmere area and put the ball past the visitors goalkeeper.

Jackson said before the Rovers match that he wanted six from the next two home matches, he has three now Town need to go break a 73 year old record by scoring in 22 league matches by beating Bournemouth at the Galpharm on Saturday.

Tranmere boss Brian Little believes the goal his side conceded was a "silly goal" and is aiming for his side to cut them out. Although Tranmere offered very little and did not look as good as last season when they beat Town 3-1 in Huddersfield, they made it difficult for Town to break them down and defended wonderfully well.

Little believes that his side had chances to clear the ball before Schofield scored, but Schofield when he is on the waltz is an hard measure to stop. It was also Schofield who won the penalty for Town when he put the Tranmere defender under pressure - the referee spotting a hand to ball infringement, but Town top scorer Abbott will have been delighted with Schofield's fifth goal of the season, after the Pole saw his spot kick saved by John Achterberg

Match Report: Huddersfield Town 1-4 Scunthorpe United

Manager Peter Jackson admitted to feeling "flat" after seeing his side's unbeaten home record in 2005 (14 matches) shattered by a well drilled exciting looking Scunthorpe United side. Town was also replaced at the top of the league one table by United, who hammered Town with some well placed finishing in front of the season highest crowd of over 14,000.

Pawel Abbott's sixth goal of the season on 66 minutes will have given little comfort to the Terriers after the curse of the manager of the month award hit Jackson and hit him hard. It was also the Irons first win in Huddersfield for 43 years! But Town seem to make an habit in recent season's of losing heavily against Scunthorpe and every recent season seem to have one or two heavy defeats.

Things did not start well for the Terriers who fell behind after 8 minutes to a controversial penalty. As the quick pace of United striker Billy Sharpe took him into the box, the Town 'keeper Paul Rachbuka was alleged to have brought down Sharpe, but with very little contact appearing to have been made, the decision looked harsh.

Former Bradford City winger Peter Beagrie delighted the 1,500 travelling supporters by placing the ball past Rachbuka to give United the lead.

With Town looking to keep the score to just 1-0 against the worst possible end to the first half happened. With just seconds of the first half injury time remaining Scunthorpe scored again. It is fair to say that the visitors were having the better of the attacking play as Town just failed to tick.

A slip by Tom Clarke on a greasy surface let in Andrew Keogh who made no mistake one on one with Rachbuka.

After the break Town looked more inspired and should have pulled a goal back minutes after the restart when Gary Taylor-Fletcher - who scored twice last season against Scunthorpe whilst a Lincoln City player - missed a glit-edge chance to score. With Town pushing Scunthorpe back and finally finding some assertiveness in the match, Taylor-Fletcher shot wide with the goal at his mercy following an Abbott shot.

A neat interchange between Andy Holdsworth and Chris Brandon saw Brandon drift into the box. His tricky was too much for the well drilled Scunthorpe defence - who led by skipper Andy Crosby looked highly effective - and Barraclough brought down Brandon for a Town penalty.

Abbott with his sixth goal of the season made no mistake and on 66 minutes he scored for Town giving them hope. But any hope the big Terriers crowd had was quickly quashed by some smart attacking again by the visitors.

With Town pushing for a leveller, Scunthorpe broke. Cleveland Taylor took the ball down field, and having ghosted past a number of poor Town challenges struck the ball towards the goal. Rachbuka did well to palm the ball onto the crossbar, but since it was one of those night's, it was a United player following-up and Matthew Sparrow made no mistake in heading the ball into the back of the net.

With the game drifting away from Town, Jackson who failed to make any substitutions in the game. Why that was when he could have brought on the pace of Junior Mendes, the skill and nonce of Tony Carss or simply just some fresh legs with fresh ideas, only Jackson can answer that one.

And with time running out, and the Terriers looking shell-shocked the salt was certainly rubbed into the already gaping wound as Scunthorpe added a fourth goal seven minutes from time. Once again the two best players on the pitch and some of the best strikers seen at Huddersfield for a long time Billy Sharpe and Andrew Keogh - again combined effectively and Keogh headed in his second of the night.

Sharpe quickly broke following a Town corner, and his pace took him away from all the blue and white stripped shirts, the former Sheffield United man's cross was inch perfect for Keogh to head in his second. Keogh was unmarked, the Town defence was not aware and the despairing efforts of Paul Rachbuka could not keep the ball out.

The referee was booed off the pitch by a disgusted Town faithful, whether some of those boos were for an inept Town performance only those doing the booing would be able to answer that one. Maybe if the overhead kick from Pawel Abbott on 2 minutes had had gone in after Town made a bright start, or the Taylor-Fletcher one on 47 minutes had settled into the back of the net - who knows? But then again those are footballing type queries and the who knows? never matter in a game in which goals do.

But keep this result in perspective. Yes it's a bad defeat, and at home even worse. The manner of the hammering also will not have endeared many of the 'additional' Town support at the Galpharm Stadium to think about coming back in an hurry.

It is an amazing statistic but it was a former Bradford City player in Beagrie who put Scunthorpe on the winning ways, it was Bradford City who on December 18, 2004 last won at the Galpharm Stadium!

But this is September, and it is just one defeat. As going to the top of the league got Town fans excited, perhaps prematurely, they must keep this one in perspective and hope that Town bounce back next Saturday at Oldham. Comments from manager Peter Jackson like "It's gone all flat" will not help - he is the main person that must keep positive.

One thing is for sure, Town will bounce back, and they will bounce back stronger.

Across the middle is Danny Schofield, Jon Worthington, Michael Collins and Chris Brandon. The two strikers are hot-shot Pawel Abbott and Gary Taylor-Fletcher.

Jacko scopes top award

After orchestrating Huddersfield Town to top position after six matches of the season Peter Jackson has rightly being awarded the accolade of "Manager of the Month" for August.

With four victories, one draw and a single opening day defeat, Town sit proudly on top of League one and made an impressive start to the Carling Cup with a 4-2 round one victory at fellow League One side Chesterfield.

Jackson who is proud of his players achievements so far this season and announced that the club is not looking to sell any of it's promising young players is delighted with the award but dedicated it to his young players who have won 13 points from a possible 16 in the opening six matches of the season.

Jackson is thrilled with the start the Terriers have made to the 2005/2006 season and beams with delight at what the club as achieved in the short two years since his return. The success of the Terriers has been helped by five league goals from League One's top goalscorer Pawel Abbott, who has now scored 37 goals in just 67 appearances.

Taking the manager of the month award - his first since March 2004, Jackson believes that his side are getting better and better with each match and on giving the award former Bradford City manager Chris Kamara said "Huddersfield look a very good side who have set the standard".

Having seen the darkness of two years away, the Terriers have progressed as a young unit through play-off success in Jackson's first season back in charge, then narrowly miss promotion last season. Town who were tipped as one of the favourites this season, have not disappointed in the first month of the season, lets just hope the success of Peter Jackson's era can continue for a good number of years
