Bill McGarry dies Former Town favourite defender Bill McGarry has died aged 77 at his home in South Africa. McGarry won 4 England caps during his playing career with the Terriers. The man who was Stoke born, joined the Town from Port Vale, and rightly became a legend in his own right. An old fashioned wing-half he was part of the unchanged Town defence of the 1952/1953 season that won promotion for the Leeds Road club. He played 381 times for the Terriers scoring 26 goals. McGarry went onto management when he hung up his boots and with Wolverhampton won the English League cup and also won promotion for Ipswich Town. McGarry also managed AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle United His funeral takes place on the day Town play Stockport County at the Galpharm Stadium. Our thoughts are with his family |

Remember to ... Vote and Win Town a player! On paper this is really one the Terriers could and maybe should have won, but with thoughts from the travelling Terriers support "What's it like to win away?" ringing in their heads, the 7th consecutive defeat on their travels must be hard to take. The Terriers cause was not made any easier as both Chesterfield goals came from the spot by Shane Nicholson. Equally less impressive was Town's discipline as Tom Clarke and Efe Sodje both saw red. Clarke junior was harshly sent off for a so called professional foul on Jamie McMaster which led to the first of Nicholson's two goals. At that stage the Terriers were doing fine in the game with the recalled Andy Booth (Pawell Abbott was dropped to the bench) was making use of his physical ability in the air. Big Efe Sodje - looking to impress for a new contract in the summer - came on as a second half substitute just 3 minutes after Chesterfield had took the lead on 3 minutes was booked on 69 minutes, and the thoughts immediately went to how long will Sodje senior remain on the pitch? Nicholson doubled the home side's advantage again from the spot on 78 minutes. McMaster who was quality throughout for the Chesterfield side tricked Town defender David Mirfin into a rash challenge, and Nicholson stuck the resulting spot kick past Town keeper Paul Rachbuka - where was the penalty saving form of the Play-Off final Rabs?! Although looking down and out with a man down and 2 goals to nil down, the Terriers failed to buckle and within 90 seconds Town were given a lifeline. David Mirfin rose well to meet a Tony Carss free-kick which found it's way into the back of the Chesterfield net and the thought's of a first point away from home in 2005, was back on! But then again, the so-called experienced defender of the side, the so-called former Nigerian World Cup defender, does what sadly he does best and found his way into the referee's notebook for a second time, resulting in another red card for Efe Sodje. Perhaps not the best thing Sodje could have done. With matches running out this season, and him looking for a new Galpharm Stadium contract in the summer, it is unlikely that manager Peter Jackson will feel empowered enough to give Sodje a new contract. The Town nemesis Jamie McMaster (who himself was booked, by a card happy referee) was involved as the Town defender rashly brought down the Chesterfield player and rightfully booked by the referee - Sodje who came on as a 53rd minute sub, was sent off just over 30 minutes later - not good enough for a player of his experience. With the Sodje red card the young Town side could not find any way past the home side's defences and for former Town player Lee Richardson (who is a coach at Saltergate) this home victory all about secures their survival and pushes them closer towards making a last ditch effort for the play-off's. It also ends a poor run at home for Chesterfield. As with Bradford City last Saturday, Town seem to be the best club to face if you are in the crux of a poor home form! For Town following on from week's of if and maybe's from manager Peter Jackson, the realism is this. The play-off's are gone, perhaps were since the start of the year and the debacle that's called the 2005 away form. Now they seriously need to start looking towards the relegation zone. Town need to start picking up points consistently. They have never found the consistency in winning this season, but at the moment there is no form on picking up points from matches. The Terriers are now just 8 points above Torquay United who currently occupy the fourth relegation spot. With just 9 to play or 27 points to play for, the Terriers know that they need to find the form to secure at least four victories (or 12 points) to secure safety in this division. Starting with a 'double' over bottom club Stockport County with a HOME win on Saturday would be an ideal tonic, as the 2004/2005 season fizzles out to a season of development and learning for Jackson's young players The Terriers have now had 5 red cards in all competition this season and the red card for 17 year old Tom Clarke for an alleged "professional foul" was the first card shown to the Town youngster in his short Town career HUDDERSFIELD TOWN P Rachubka, D Mirfin, T Clarke, N Clarke, A Holdsworth (66 P Abbott) , C Brandon, A Ahmed, T Carss, M Collins (54 E Sodje) , A Booth, D Facey Goal: Mirfin (79) Booked: Booth, Sodje (E), Brandon Sent Off: Clarke (T) - straight red, Sodje (E) - second booking CHESTERFIELD M Fulop, A Bailey, S Blatherwick, I Evatt, S Nicholson, M Allott, M Hudson (16 W Allison) , D Niven, A O'Hare, J McMaster, M De Bolla (87 G Davies) Goals: Nicholson (53, 78 both pens) Booked: Allison, Nicholson, McMaster Sent Off: - Referee: Mr B. Curson STATS Ball Possession: Town 49%, Chesterfield 51% Town last 6 league matches: L L W L W L Currently Town have won just 7 points when coming back from losing, but have lost 20 points when winning and failed to win the match! The current form table when looking at the last 8 matches puts Town third bottom, with only Wrexham and Oldham below them |
