Pre-Season Result: Rochdale 2-2 Huddersfield Town

Peter Jackson saw his side defensively put in the "worst performance" in pre-season as Town twice came from behind to gain a 2-2 draw with League Two side Rochdale at Spotland. Both Andy Booth (16) and Pawel Abbott (penalty on 55) ensure that when the home side went ahead the lead did not last for long.

Although Town boss Jackson admitted that the Terriers should not be conceding two goals against teams like Rochdale the first of the two home goals was a sweet direct free-kick effort. The second Dale goal was another defensive mistake in pre-season this time by Nathan Clarke - who allowed the Dale player in to place the ball into the back of the net.

The first Town equaliser came from the trusty head of Andy Booth after a well executed Danny Adams cross. And although Town had efforts to take the lead in the first period, it was Dale who took the lead on 50 minutes following the Clarke mistake.

The equaliser for Town came from the penalty spot. Polish star Abbott converted it after Andy Holdsworth was bundled down. Holdsworth was again in the wars, as he took a thigh injury.

Jackson talking to the official site conceded that Town "need to get tighter at the back". And with under one week to go until the big kick-off at Nottingham Forest on Saturday Jackson and his coaching staff clearly have a little bit of work to do to tighten up the Terriers defensively

Jacko warns would be purchasers

The excited Town boss Peter Jackson has stressed one day before the closure of the current transfer window and just one week ahead of the start of the new football season, that it would take a "very, very big bid" for any would be club wishing to purchase any of Town's bright young stars.

With many of the Town players attracting attention during last season, Jackson has stressed that Huddersfield Town is not a selling club and has no reason and no need to sell any of the quality youngster's on the Town books

Kemal is the latest person to be evicted from the Big Brother house

Irritating crossing-dressing idiot Kemal has become the ninth and latest housemate of Big Brother 2005 to be evicted by the public. He was up against Orlaith in last night's eviction facing his first ever public eviction.

With 51.5% of the vote Kemal was evicted, but Orlaith who claims to be desperate to leave is contemplating leaving the house anyway - drama, drama drama!

Pre-Season Result: Wakefield & Emley 1-1 Huddersfield Town

A Town side captained for the first time by Michael Collins needed a second half equaliser from John McAliskey to prevent defeat at Belle Vue in the Mick Green Memorial Trophy match after Wakefield had taken the lead.

Town could not find the way past the Wakefield 'keeper in a first half in which Town boss Peter Jackson felt his side could have scored "six goals". The best effort from the visitors came when new boy Gary Taylor-Fletcher struck the post.

Within seconds of the re-start Wakefield took the lead. A terrible mix-up between Town 'keeper Paul Rachbuka and defender John McCombe and the home side's James Nestor promptly stroked the ball past Town's American keeper.

The Wakefield goal seemed to stun Town into life, and they hit back with some meaningful attacks. But despite numerous attempts Town could only find one goal. That came from youngster John McAliskey who confidently finished with an excellent strike.

Both sides shared the Mick Green trophy, but it will be the Wakefield side who will have been the happier

Pre-Season Result: Mansfield Town 1-2 Huddersfield Town

Goals from Andy Booth and one in stoppage time from Junior Mendes grabbed the Terriers the victory after the hosts had equalised. It continued Huddersfield's winning ways on home soil in pre-season matches as former Mansfield player Junior Mendes came off the bench to secure the victory for Peter Jackson's side.

Town dominated the first half, but the hosts came back into the match in the second. During an eventful first half the Terriers had a goal chalked off for off-side then Pawel Abott saw a penalty kick saved.

Andy Booth scored the opening goal of the match on 70 minutes, with Brown of Mansfield equalising. With time running out Jackson put on former St Mirren and Mansfield town player Mendes (whose introduced was greeted by a chorus of booing from the Field Mill faithful) and it was the Terriers introduced striker that secured the winner in injury time.

It was another decent run out for the Terriers and another victory. But Town manager Peter Jackson once again demanded that his side cut out stupid goals, which he fears could cost the Terriers dearly in league matches.

Huddersfield Town side: Paul Rachubka, Any Holdsworth, Tom Clarke, Tony Carss (Danny Adams 70), Martin McIntosh, David Mirfin, Chris Brandon, Andy Booth (Junior Mendes 78), Pawel Abbott (Gary Taylor-Fletcher 64), Jon Worthington (Danny Schofield 70), Mark Hudson (Michael Collins 64). Science is the latest person to be evicted from the Big Brother house

Science has become the eight and latest housemate of Big Brother 2005 to be evicted by the public. He was up against Orlaith, and with Science facing his third possible eviction, it was third time unlucky.

There should now be some peace in the house following a torrent of angry exchanges in the house with Science the main catalyst. The reaming housemates - mainly Derek are hoping that there will be peace in thine house following the eviction of noisy Science.

But Science was evicted with only 50.5% of the total public vote - but he admitted afterwards that he was behaving in house "just like he really is".

And the man from Yorkshire was disappointed that he was not in the house still but he believes that people in the house are changing as the final approaches and that people are starting to dislike one another.

Pre-Season Result: Rossendale United 0-4 Huddersfield Town Reserves

Huddersfield Town reserves secured a 4-0 pre-season victory at Rossendale United last night, after an impressive performance destroyed the Unibond League side.

Goals from Mark Hudson (1), Junior Mendes (46), Tom Clarke (48) and Matthew Young (88) secured the victory for Town. Injured midfielder Adnan Ahmed came on at half -time, as Lee Fowler who looks unlikely to be leaving Town to Grimsby Town warmed the bench

4-Star Pav secures big pre-season win

Pawel Abbott scored all four Town goals, as a decent run out against Harrogate Town ended with a 4-1 victory for the Terriers. It was a comfortable victory for Town in their first pre-season match on English soil.

Abbott started the rout at Wetherby Road on 13 minutes having beaten the home keeper in a one on one situation after been put through by Martin McIntosh. Paul Rachbuka then made a tremendous save to preserve the lead after an Harrogate player had a overhead effort.

Following the hectic 5 minutes from the first goal, Abbott chipped in Town's second and the Polish star then grabbed his hat trick 3 minutes before the break.

The third following excellent work by Andy Holdsworth after the home side had failed to clear their lines from a corner. On 50 minutes it was 4-0 to Huddersfield as Abbott's neat finish capped off a very good personal display from the Polish player.

The Terriers however conceded with just 4 minutes to go. They had fought back commendably in the second half after the visitors had dominated the first period. But Chris Coupe grabbed a consolation for the Wetherby Roaders with a goal on 86 minutes. Coupe was well set-up by Bradford City on loan player Sam Denton

Terriers return with injuries

Town who are in action against Harrogate Town (away) tonight, have returned from Ibiza with a number of injuries. Danny Adams, Pawel Abbott, Nathan Clarke, Andy Holdsworth and Andy Booth all received knocks whilst playing in the Copa De Ibiza.

Particularly concerning for the Town management team is the left thigh strain for central defender Nathan Clarke - although he has been under intensive treatment he has not been able to shake off the injury.

Town physio Lee Martin said that the week in Ibiza was a very good workout for the squad as they had fantastic facilities and were able to vary their working patterns.

The injured players join midfielder Adnan Ahmed on the treatment table - he did not travel to Ibiza, but Holdsworth should be OK to face Harrogate Town tonight

Orlaith and Science are up!

After a week of bickering and fighting, and following a day of heated discussions Science finds himself up for the public vote with Orlaith. Orlaith who joined the original housemates with Eugene just a few weeks ago will not be happy going against Science who has being up for eviction twice before and survived.

Anthony is now odds on favourite to win with Science 3/1 second favourite. Although the housemates seem to have tired of Science's obsession with food and turkey mince, will the public also show the Yorkshire lad the way? Science who saw off a previous favourite Maxwell also survived last week's six-way option.

Orlaith meanwhile who is constantly sunning herself and stunning the viewers with her looks and body is beginning to get housemates backs up. She is 33/1 favourite to win Big Brother with the bookmakers, and she is favourite to go.

Science was favourite to leave when he went head to head with Maxwell will the books turn head up or will Science finally go, making it a lucky third time for the housemates?

Who goes you decide?

Terriers take third place

Huddersfield Town beat an Ibiza 11 last night 2-1 to secure third place in the 2005 Copa De Ibiza. In a below par performance Peter Jackson's side came from behind to secure the victory.

It was a much better performance from Ibiza and a stronger side, that took Town all the way having lost to QPR 5-0 on Monday evening. Miguel Ramon powered home a header on 11 minutes to give the Island team the lead, placing his header well past Phil Senior in the Town goal. This was after Tom Clarke had had a decent effort and Tony Carss deflected shot off Chris Brandon was disallowed for Brandon was in an off-side position.

It was a terrible mistake from Town defender David Mirfin that led to the Ibiza goal.

Although the Terriers dominated the home side still had enough attacking flair to cause them problems, but Tony Carss levelled the scores with a goal on 41 minutes. Seconds later new boy Mark Hudson almost put Town in the lead but his long range shot went just wide.

Although the second half was disappointed and disjointed, the Terriers won the match thanks to an effort from club captain Jon Worthington. It was another long range effort which smashed into the back of the net from Worthington, who followed up Carss' wonder goal from the first half.

Before the Worthington goal, that ended been the winner, Gary Taylor-Fletcher almost scored his first goal in Town colours, but saw his shot strike the post, and with time running out the Island 11 team almost grabbed an equalising goal but a late strike hit the Town post.

Captain for the match Andy Holdsworth was retired from the match suffering an injury and although he will return to the UK with the injury it is not thought to be bad one

Town beaten in Ibiza

Huddersfield Town lost 1-0 to Coventry City in yesterday's Copa De Ibiza match despite an impressive performance from a young side. Town went down to a 44th minute goal from the Sky Blues Gary McSheffrey.

Town had Martin McIntosh and Mark Hudson making their debuts from the start, whilst Gary Taylor-Fletcher replaced McIntosh on 55 minutes to make his debut in the blue and white stripped shirt of Huddersfield Town.

Town will now face the Island 11 team who lost 5-0 to Queens Park Rangers. City and Rangers will contest the final.

The Terriers started the better forcing multiple chances and corners as the Championship side were slow out and pushed back by a forceful Town start.

City came into the game as half time approached and a neat interchanged left McSheffrey clear on goal and with only Paul Rachukba to beat he placed his shot past the American's right hand to put City into the lead.

Both Jon Worthington and Chris Brandon had great efforts on goal during a lively first half.

With 10 minutes of the match to go Tony Carss saw a shot cleared off the line. During the second half neither side really had many clear chances, but it was still probing Town that had the better ones.

Town ended the match much the better but could find no way past the City defence, and at the death Tom Clarke's effort was headed out for a corner.

It was disappointing that with half-time approaching Coventry took the lead with their first shot on goal.

Both manager's were pleased with what was shown during the match. City boss Mickey Adams called Town "fantastic" after seeing his side snatch a fortunate victory. Adams was quick to praise the young Town side calling them a "credit" to Huddersfield Town.

Although disappointed with the defeat, Peter Jackson was delighted with the performance and pleased with the fitness levels his players showed during the pre-season match.

The Terriers had a decent following in the SD Portmany stadium.

Coventry: Day (Paston, 46); Watson; Hall (Duffy, 46); Hughes (Osbourne, 46); Page (Whing, 46); Shaw; Scowcroft; Doyle; Adebola (Wood, 46); McSheffrey (Barrett, 46); Jorgensen

Town: Paul Rachubka, Andy Holdsworth, Danny Adams (Anthony Lloyd 55), Mark Hudson (Tony Carss 55), Martin McIntosh (Gary Taylor-Fletcher 55), Nathan Clarke, Chris Brandon, David Mirfin (Tom Clarke 70), Pawel Abbott (John McAliskey), Jon Worthington (c) (Michael Collins 70), Danny Schofield. Six up for the chop!

After deciding to vote, after Big Brother had told the housemates it was optional this week, Craig, Anthony and Kemal have been saved from the week's public vote.

That means the remaining six housemates - Orlaith, Science, Makosi, Vanessa, Eugene and Derek ALL face the public vote.

However in another twist of fate for the housemates, they will have to decided who goes from the two housemates who collect the most votes with the public - stunning stuff from Big Brother - Ok, maybe not!

Summer of Cricket - Ashes 2005

NAT WEST CHALLENGE MATCH
(2 of 3, Series tied 1-1 with 1 to play)
(Lord's)

Australia 224-3 (44.2 overs) beat England 223-8 (50 overs) by 7 wickets
Australia won the toss and elected to field first

Australia tied the Nat West Challenge one day International series after an empathic victory over England at a sun drenched Lord's. It takes the series to an exciting climax at this Tuesday's third and final match at The Brit Oval.

Australia cruised to victory with over 5 overs to spare as the English batsman failed to post a considerable total on a very good wicket. The three pronged strike attack of Glenn McGrath, Simon Kasprowicz and the inspired performance from Brett Lee ensured that the Australian batsman were always going to have a simple looking task of getting the runs required for victory.

Australia did what England should have, make batting look easy on a decent wicket. Darren Gough's first over went for 13 and the Australians never looked back. Opening batsman Adam Gilchrist set the scene as he raced to 29 from 20 balls before becoming the first of the three wickets to fall. The Australian innings followed the same pattern as previous matches going off very very quickly with 32 runs on the board with just 4 overs gone.

It could have been so much different for England as Gilchrist had his stumps knocked out in Gough's first over, but the Yorkshire born fast bowler had stepped over and conceded a no ball - that pretty much summed up the game for England in the field.

Any thoughts of England winning the match pretty much ended there on, as a decent and steady partnership between captain Ricky Ponting and the recently called-up Simon Katich took the score to 96 before Katich skied Ashley Giles to Steve Harmison when on 30.

England's bowling and fielding was toil some, as they failed to make any impact on the Australian batting, making it look far too easy and relaxed for all the Australians. The England batting stuttered in the early stages and for far too many stages of the match as the Australians dominated a very one-sided Lord's contest.

England's strike attack was poor. Darren Gough went for 43 runs off just 6.2 overs - although he took the prize wicket of Ponting - albeit far too late in the Australian reply to make the crowd wake up. Simon Jones was cleaner and had a better line that Gough but he took failed to ask many questions of the batsmen.

The Calvary from England was also off-key today with Harmison, Andrew Flintoff and Paul Collingwood all struggling to check the Australian run chase romp. In fact Collingwood was dealt with severely by Ponting who clipped him so narrowly for four's on far too many occasions.

Harmison now regarded as England's premier bowler was hit for 11 runs off one over by Ponting and the same batsman hit Flintoff for a huge six.

Spinner Ashley Giles was the pick of the England bowlers with 1 wicket for 38 runs from his 10. And it was a Gough no ball that sealed the inevitable victory for England.

Ponting's fine captain's innings of 111 off just 115 balls had him stating that this was a "commanding victory", in stark contrast Michael Vaughan was out for 1, his field placings were far too simple for the Australian's to navigate although he remains upbeat.

Ponting was well supported after the dismissal of Katich by Damien Martyn who shared in a 120 run third wicket partnership as Martyn remained under beaten on 39.

Once again the England top order struggled and at one stage England was 28-3 then 45-4, with the bowlers well on top. Andrew Flintoff was England's saviour making 87 before he was one of Brett Lee's five wickets. It was Flintoff's highest ever total against the Aussies, and he had good support from Paul Collingwood (34) and a fine late surge from Geriant Jones (27 from just 33 balls).

It was the returning Michael Kasprowicz who did all the damage for Australia in the early stages of the match taking both opening English wickets and he finished with fine figures of 2 for 40. Lee bowling with intensity and pace checked the England innings as the middle order once again fought back well for the home side, Lee finishing with figures of 5 for 41 from 10 - the best from an Australian at Lord's.

Lee's fifth wicket, sealing his fourth one-day international five-wicket haul came thanks to a super catch from Australian captain Ricky Ponting. At one point in the match Lee was bowling at nearly 100 miles per hour!

Jason Gillespie once again struggled, and with figures of none for 42 from seven overs, he must be thinking long and hard about his place in the Ashes test team, which starts very soon. Andrew Symonds also claimed no wickets today

The 103 partnership between Flintoff and Collingwood that took England from 45 to 148 could have helped give the English bowlers a target to creditably defend, although on a good wicket Adam Gilchrist and the Simon Katich could give the opening bowlers much to think about.

Lord's in the nations capital stands to observe a one minutes silence in memory of all those who died in Thursday's London bombings. Both sets of players as a mark of respect are wearing black armbands.

Vikram Solanki is once again the England substitute as the new rules in international cricket take affect in this compeition. England is an unchanged side from the one that beat Australia convincingly in Yorkshire.

Australia on the other hand ring the changes as they look to keep the series alive. Opener Matthew Hayden is left out with Simon Katich starting. There was also a start for Michael Kasprowicz who was favoured instead of Brad Hogg as the Australian's played 4 seamers. Brad Haddin is the substitute for the Baggygreens - a big hitting wicket keeper who will replace Glenn McGrath in the Australian batting line-up.

Michael Vaughan the England captain said that he felt the total posted by England was competitive, but felt that England needed to take early wickets - they did not do that and the fielding was off-key badly. He spoke of his disappointment at the early pressure his side was put under early on in the contest. With half the overs gone England were well under 100 runs.

Against the World Champions that is simply not good enough - although Vaughan remains positive for what should be a very good final. Cricket Australia's head coach John Buchanan feels that his side on right on track for the start of the Ashes with the Australian ship just starting to travel briskly in the right direction now. The coach also gave his support to under-fire fast bowler Jason Gillespie who was again targeted by England's batsman for plenty of runs.

Australia's Brett Lee was man of the match for his 5 wickets which restricted the England fightback to just 223 runs. But once again the England top order as failed and they will need to improve on that if they are to win on Tuesday and for the impending Ashes test series

Neither side employed the use of the 'super-sub'.

The final match of the three match series takes place on Tuesday in Surrey.

The start of the Ashes are now just 11 days away ...

British and Irish Lions Tour of New Zealand, 2005

RESULT: New Zealand 38-19 Lions

The New Zealand All Blacks powered to victory in the third and final 2005 test match against the British and Irish Lions to complete a 3-0 white-wash over the Lions. They have expertly and professionally followed up the victories in Christchurch and Wellington with an empathic 38-19 victory in Auckland.

In yet another powerful performance from the All Blacks, the victory was clinical. Although the Lions took a 6-0 lead early in the first half and looked to have started positively and energetically, they missed the opportunity to go further into the lead and the home side powered through.

With two tries from man of the match Tana Umaga, New Zealand was always in control of this Auckland test and Umaga the All Blacks captain becomes the 10th captain in the history of the All Blacks to lead his side to a test series victory over the Lions.

There was another five tries for the home side, with the Lions having to settle for four Stephen Jones penalties second half consolation try from Lewis Moody try that Jones converted, but the All Blacks were far too superior in every department to the Lions in not only this test match but the whole series.

Despite indiscipline by the home side (twice had a player sinbinned), the Lions despite all their energy and passion could not find a way past as the rain poured down on the Eden Park turf. The Lions looked stronger in the forward play by behind the scrum they promised much but offered little, and far too often the Lions were forced into terrible mistakes.

The All Blacks tries came from Conrad Smith, Ali Williams, Umaga (2) and a last second one from Rico Gear, all supported well by the boot of All Black debutante Luke McAlister who scored 13 points. There could have been another try from Sitiveni Sivivatu, as the quick New Zealander crossed the line on 53 minutes, but the touch judge Stuart Dickinson had seen a late reckless challenge by Jerry Collins, who became the second All Black to be sinbinned.

As the Lions whittled under the pressure in the vain hope that the All Blacks had had enough of scoring points in this series - the battle stained and well beaten Lions sank to their knees for the fifth time as Rico Gear latched onto a long kick to run through for a terrific fifth try for the All Blacks.

Credit to all supporters in Eden Park, the minute's silence to honour the memories of those who lost their lives in the London bombings on Thursday was magnificently observed. But despite Jones putting over a penalty on three minutes to give the Lions the lead, there was nothing much else to cheer from a Lions perspective other than marvel in the wonderful rugby played by the All Blacks.

This was dominant by the All Blacks, this was clinical as they killed off the Lions hopes of not only winning but of scoring points. The Lions try on 58 minutes was mere consolation on a tour that progressed in the test arena so badly for Sir Clive Woodward's men.

The try to be fair to the Lions came after a sustained period of pressure as moments before the Lions were held up from the try line with the video ref giving a 5 metre scrum. But the plain facts are that the Lions made wrong choices, going for the corner rather than kicking for penalties. They also did the little things wrong.

This was only the third time in Lions history of a cleansweep for New Zealand. The 2005 side as joined the 1966 and 1993 sides in adding a disappointing chapter in the Lions record books. Again the Lions will look on missed opportunities against a side that looked quicker and fitter and one step ahead. The Lions once again allowed the All Blacks cheap points straight after they had scored points.

And against the might of New Zealand you have to do everything top drawer, or as the Lions have found the All Blacks will maul you. Licking their wounds, looking to restore pride the Lions will need to console then bounce back on their 2009 tour to South Africa.

But before that in 2007 there is the simple fact of the World Cup in France - New Zealand after this showing look clear favourites to take England's crown.

- The Power of Four and New Zealand national anthem are played, as the Lions support competes admirably as the All Blacks perform the Haka

Preview

It is the third and final test of the 2005 tour, and brings the curtain down on the Lions 2005 tour to New Zealand.

With the Lions got only pride to play for, coach Sir Clive Woodward will be using all his qualities in the tactical sense to prevent an embarrassing white-wash.

Outclassed in the test matches in Christchurch and Wellington, the Lions will be hoping that they can produce the heroics required to claim a victory in Auckland.

But any hope of the All Blacks taking it easy should be minimal because Graham Henry's men will be hoping to add to the Lions test misery and win the series 3-0.

The Lions test will go ahead despite the bomb attacks in London, but there will be a minutes silence before the start of the match.

Gareth Thomas is fit to lead the Lions, as Woodward makes changes to the side that lost last week. England's Mark Cueto makes his Lions test debut, whilst Ireland's Geordan Murphy is also called up. The pair getting their chance after impressing Woodward during the midweek matches and both played well against Auckland, Tuesday.

The Lions pack was due to be unchanged after a better showing a week ago until Steve Thompson was a late injury for the Lions. The England forward is suffering from illness and will be replaced by Ireland's Shane Byrne

Johnny Wilkinson and Gavin Henson are both missing through injury, whilst Will Greenwood gets his first chance on the tour.

Due to injury the All Blacks will be without fly-half sensation Daniel Carter who destroyed the Lions hopes last Saturday with a scintillating performance in Wellington. There will therefore be an All Blacks debut for British born Luke McAlister

Big Brother 2005

Maxwell is the latest person to be evicted from the Big Brother house

Maxwell has become the sixth and latest housemate of Big Brother 2005 to be evicted by the public. Although the bookies favourite up against Science the recently shaven headed Londoner faced and got the public boot.

Maxwell will be packing his bags after Yorkshireman Science saw him off. It was the second week on the trot that Maxwell faced the public eviction. Last week was his stay of execution has his lover Saskia got the boot, this week Maxwell joins her in leaving the BB house.

In a twist of fate Makosi decided to pack her bags to spoof the other housemates that it was her who was facing the eviction tonight - but silly girl, we all know that it was not, and you even failed to convince Vanessa!

She then turned her attentions to Anthony, who had packed his suitcase before been told that it was just a big joke - just like the 3 Amigo's new haircuts. Perhaps the trusting Anthony will be less taken in by Makosi and her team of cronies.

There is more arguments brewing over the grocery list. Craig is thought to have changed some of the order for beer for his chum Maxwell (silly boy!), and if this is found to be the case Kermal is going to confront cry-baby Craig. Kemal has told Big Brother that "he is going to tell him [Craig]" if he has replaced fruit with beer.

Banana's to the fore please! - perhaps not, as they have been replaced by lagers by Craig - wait for the fireworks, it's cider-gate part two simmering away.

So Maxwell is out - what will the house do without his dirty habits, his one-liners and his general bad manners?

Will the BB house be the same without Maxwell and his "Jog on, Jog off", whatever that meant, we don't know, but it sure was funny.

Maxwell received 57% of the vote and looked genuinely shocked when his named was announced. But towards the latter stages of his stay in the 2005 house, his pranks and ladish ways began to get on everyone's nerves and he simply had to go.

Goodnight and goodbye Maxwell!

Oh and get the tissues ready for drip Craig, he is bound to need them

Craig certainly needed those tissues on the with the news that Maxwell had gone, whilst Maxwell was reunited with his lover Saskia on his Big Brother exit, and the crowd gave him a decent welcome back to the real world.

A former favourite to win this year's Big Brother as gone, is it now Makosi all the way for the title?

Summer of Cricket - Ashes 2005

NAT WEST CHALLENGE MATCH

Australia 219-7 (50 overs), England 221-1 (46 overs)
England won by 9 wickets
(Headingley)

England has cruised to a 9 wicket victory with 24 balls to spare as the old enemy Australia was beaten once again this summer in the first of three Nat West Challenge matches.

It was the sporting lift the country needed after the devastating terrorist bombings on our nations proud capital.

Set 220 to win, England knocked them off with ease as Marcus Trescothick scored 104 off 134 balls (not out), captain Michael Vaughan scored some much need runs grabbing a half century on his home pitch.

Trescothick shared in a 101 opening wicket stance with Andrew Strauss who posted a very good knock of 41.

Earlier Australia had scrambled to 219 with 30 of those coming off the last 2 overs. Mike Hussey was once again the nemesis for England has he posted a rapid fire 46. Once again the opening pair for the Aussies gave their team a good platform but they like Saturday where out in consecutive overs.

Australia had scored 58 runs in the first 15 overs of the contest, but their batsman soon found the bounce of the pitch telling as the England bowlers began to get on top. Although he failed to grab a wicket Simon Jones finished his 10 overs with fine figures 28 runs were all that came off his 60 balls - he was then replaced in the field after his bowling his allocation.

Martyn added a useful 43 before he became one of Paul Collingwood's 4 victims. Dangerman Andrew Symonds again went cheaply this time scoring just 6 runs.

Australia's 219 looked likely to be enough on a difficult seaming wicket at Headingley. But Vaughan once again won the toss for England and put the tourists into bat first. Australia's total was restricted by England during the middle of the innings. Australia started off like a train and with just 12 balls to spare were on 189-7.

Once again Hussey and Brett Lee came to the rescue late on for the Baggygreens with some much needed late runs.

There was a little bit of luck for England with Trescothick being caught from a no-ball with him on 5 runs and Andrew Strauss was almost caught by Adam Gilchrist early on in the England innings. With the England run chase starting slow - just 26 runs coming off the first 10 overs, England needed someone to get their head down and that's just what the England opening pair did.

England went after the bowling of Jason Gillespie who went for 66 from his 10 overs, and the only other bowler to use all 10 was Andrew Symonds who went for 32. Brett Lee was uncharacteristically expensive 48 runs from his 9 overs, whilst Glenn McGrath went for only 26 from 8 overs.

Brad Hogg continued to live up to his reputation with the wicket of Strauss in his first over, but after that wicket the Australian bowlers toiled as Trescothick and Vaughan despatched them to every part of the Yorkshire pitch.

For England Collingwood's 4 wickets provides further evidence that he is a very good international all-rounder, Steve Harminson was again tight with his figures. 17 off the final Andrew Flintoff over (the second to last of the Australian innings) spoiled his figures, whilst there was no wicket for former Yorkshire bowler Darren Gough - whose last over (the last of the Australia innings) was expensive 13 runs coming off it.

There was also a first for cricket in England with the inclusion of a single substitution in the match for both sides and new fielding restrictions. England used Vikram Solanki for Simon Jones after 31 overs, with Australia replacing Matthew Haydon with Brad Hogg after 22 overs.

Big Brother 2005

Bad mannered and love sick Maxwell and loud mouthed in your face Science will both contest Friday's public eviction after receiving the most nominations.

Maxwell received 6 votes. Coming from Derek, Eugene, Kemal, Orlaith, Makosi and Science - whilst Science got 4 nominations these from Anthony, Craig, Maxwell and Vanessa.

Fellow housemates are now getting to a point where they are tired and irritated of Maxwell's ladish and crude behaviour and manners, with pretty girl Orlaith stating of meathead Maxwell "rude lazy slob". Science received votes for his demanding and not give an inch stance and some find him irritating.

Who goes you decide.

British and Irish Lions Tour of New Zealand, 2005

Result: Auckland 13-17 Lions

The Lions produced a spirited display to see off the strong challenge from Auckland in a close game at Eden Park. Leading 14-3 at the break thanks to three penalties and a late Lions try through Martyn Williams.

The Lions knew they were in a game during a combative first half in which Auckland could have gone for goal but played a traditional tap penalty on three occasion's. In a tough first period, Charlie Hodgson had to leave the pitch injured, but the Lions held onto a big lead at the break.

However, they were made to hang onto the lead during the second period as the hosts stormed back, but the Lions midweek coach Ian McGeechan was delighted that the Lions continued their winning ways over the provincial sides.

Isa Nacewa scored the Auckland try. With 5 minutes to go Irish kicker Ronan O'Gara ensured the Lions maintained their midweek winning ways with his third penalty (the Lions fourth) of the game. But once again the Lions disappointed in discipline and gave far too much ball away.

The Lions under intense pressure towards the end of the contest could have gone behind but Brent Ward missed, and on 21 minutes the home side was unlucky not to score the opening try but Lions try scorer Matyn Williams and England's Matt Dawson combined well to keep Auckland prop John Afoa from grounded the ball in the try area.

This was a decent result for the Lions who were tested all the way by the strongest provincial side on this 2005 tour. Whether the unbeaten midweek stat will mean much with the Lions facing a white-wash test score in the face time will only tell.

Although not ruled out of the tour just yet Johnny Wilkinson could feature in the final test despite being replaced following a reoccurrence of his shoulder injury during the 48-18 second test defeat.

The Sides:

Auckland
Brent Ward, Isa Nacewa, Ben Atiga, Sam Tuitupou, Joe Rokocoko, Tasesa Lavea, Steve Devine, Angus MacDonald, Daniel Braid, Justin Collins (captain), Bryce Williams, Brad Mika, John Afoa, Semisi Telefoni, Saimone Taumoepeau
Replacements: John Fonokalafi, Chris Heard/Nick White, Kurtis Haiu, Jerome Kaino, Taniela Moa, Isaia Toe'ava, Gavin Williams/Ben Atiga

Lions
Geordan Murphy, Mark Cueto, Will Greenwood, Gordon D'Arcy, Denis Hickie, Charlie Hodgson, Matt Dawson, Michael Owen, Martyn Williams, Jason White, Ben Kay, Simon Shaw, John Hayes, Gordon Bulloch (captain), Graham Rowntree

Brown moves to Lincoln City

Nat Brown has finally made his move away from the Galpharm Stadium joining Lincoln City in a one year deal. Brown who came through the ranks at Town was given the chance of a move by Peter Jackson, has the utility man who can be used in a number of positions was not in Jackson's first choice squad.

The Town boss was delighted that the 24 year old who began his career with the Terriers as a striker has got himself fixed up with a new club that should give him a better chance of first team football. Although Jackson calls the attitude of Brown great, he made just 7 appearances last season for Town in a career with Huddersfield that spanned 83 appearances.

It's good new personally for Brown who will be at a club close to his Yorkshire home, and after the disappointment of the failed move to Shrewsbury Town last week.

The academy product has become the Imps 10th summer signing at Lincoln hope to gain promotion after two failed attempts in the play-off's for the past two seasons. Last season they missed out on the final to Southend United, the season before that Town beat them at the semi-final stage.

Brown still had a year of his contract to run but Jackson was fair in giving the player the chance to get fixed up with another club. He has never scored for the Terriers but always shown enough hunger for the first team shirt.

Jackson said of Brown's move: "The only problem is I cannot guarantee him first team football" has he spoke warmly of Brown's attitude and his ability.

Brown will no doubt be one of a few of the first team fringe players to be shown the exit door, with third choice 'keeper Jacob Giles likely to be joining him very soon.

Big Brother 2005

Today is nomination day, but who have the remaining housemates nomad? Following the tension filled Holiday Reps task, will the holiday reps exact revenge on the housemates who tired them out? Or will the pinning Maxwell get to see Saskia sooner than maybe the cocky Londoner thought he would?

Are new boy Eugene's strange stories - the latest about the insides of a dishwasher, finally boring the rest of his housemates! Typical of Eugene he told of how he and his friends placed a camera device in a dishwasher then turned it on - oh dear Big Brother, should Eugene ever have made it to the main house? - Bring back bubbly Kinga!!

Having been ordered around by Maxwell, being told to obtain cider and having her uniform soaked, mild-manner Irish girl Orlaith is starting to get annoyed with Maxwell - the love sick puppy! There should be some fun this evening with the task as the house holds a beauty pageant.

Yet again the boys showed they could fight over the least little thing with Science, Anthony and Maxwell trading vocal blows over the size and artistic qualities of their sandcastles - yes that is right sandcastles!

Anthony and Craig are finally friends again after their love-tiff (after Anthony called love sick Craig ugly), whilst the other housemates discuss what a relationship Orlaith and Maxwell would make in the absence of Saskia. Although Anthony is making moves towards African Makosi after the pair shared a passionate embrace in the pool - as dimwit Craig and luscious Orlaith looked on.

Both Makosi and Anthony declined to make any comment, using amnesia as the excuse - if only!

Meanwhile it looks like Orlaith has a thing for hairdressing housemate Craig, who was told by Makosi that now that Orlaith realises that Craig and Anthony are not an item (yeah right!) she "really likes him". But all that seems to be on the mind of Craig is ... yes you guessed it ... Anthony.

Both Craig and Maxwell have shown tears showing that the male housemates are not scared to show emotion. For Kemal and Derek, well Kemal is just Kemal - the foolish and strange cross-dressing idiot, whilst Derek wants an housemate on his same level - Don't think John Major would be interested in joining you in the house Derek!

Team Maxwell - the rebranded group following Saskia's departure - probably best referred to as the 'Three Amigo's' are back up to their teasing best as they recommence the late night tricks - oh boys!

Scroll past the cricket news for the Lions test match report. On a day of dramatic sporting events. The Lions were mauled by New Zealand who took an assailable 2-0 lead in the three match series in Wellington, whilst at Lord's England Australia tied the Nat West final after a last ball thriller in the capital.

Read both match reports below in thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk's SummerSpecial

Summer of Cricket - Ashes 2005

NAT WEST FINAL

Australia 196 all out (48.6 overs), England 196-9 (50 overs)
MATCH TIED
(Lord's)

A dramatic end to the final of the Nat West final which went to the very end was tied after a low scoring but entertaining game in London. England at one point was 19-4 then 33-5 but great determination from Geriant Jones and Paul Collingwood, then some late knocks from Darren Gough and Ashley Giles tied the game.

It may have been gloomy and overcast at Lord's, but the match was played with passion and determination and right up to the final ball of the match the result and the tournament title could have gone either way.

Ashley Giles needed 3 from the final Glenn McGrath ball to win the match for England, but Giles and Harmison ran a dramatic two to level the scores and tie the final.

It was sensational stuff from Collingwood and Jones who steered the rocky England ship to dry lands. They put on a remarkable 116. It was a very patient partnership that put England on the recovery road and back in contention to win the match.

England had threatened an embarrassing collapse as they set in pursuit of the Australian total. Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss, Michael Vaughan (again failing with the bat) and Kevin Pietersen had all gone before the score was past 20. Andrew Flintoff offered brief hope with a couple of boundaries but he too went, ensuring that none of the England top 5 batsman got into double figures.

Glenn McGrath got both Vaughan (bottom edged onto the stumps off) and Trescothick (catch to slip) with balls which tempted the English batsmen to both play poor shots. The other three batsman in the top 5 were out to brilliant balls on a pitch that was a seamers playground.

But the England batting rallied thanks to the heroics of Collingwood and Jones. Collingwood made 53 before he was run out in bizarre circumstances then in the very next over Jones went for 71 from 100 balls. With the light fading and many feeling the hopes of an England victory going with it, Giles and Gough steadied the English ship again after Simon Jones had gone for just one run.

Australia posted 196 in their innings despite a blistering start. Australia was in command as England toiled early on. At one stage England seam bowler Simon Jones was hit for four successive fours from Adam Gilchrist. But as the innings progressed Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison checked the Australian batsman back and ensured that the English bowlers got on top.

Throughout the middle of the order Australia failed to score a run off 28 balls and with Flintoff (3 for 23 off 8 overs) and Harmison (3 for 27 off 10 overs) gave England a great chance of winning the Nat West trophy. And Australia found themselves under the cosh as wickets were falling and runs were not coming - Australia crumpled to 93-5, needing a valiant 54 run partnership between Andrew Symonds and Mike Hussey

It was a fine knock from Hussey who was unbeaten on 62 whilst openers Matthew Hayden and Gilchrist had given Australia a fantastic start putting on 50 for the first wicket from just 6.3 overs. Both however went quickly together after the first wicket had gone and if it had not been for Hussey's knock and a 29 from Symonds, Australia would have been in total disarray.

England had won the toss and Michael Vaughan was quickly active in putting Ricky Pointing's side into bat.

Nothing could spilt the two sides throughout the series and if this entertaining match is anything to go by, the 2005 Ashes series is set to be an excellent match up between two very good sides. This was a thrilling way to end a great series that included Bangladesh.

The tied runs (2 from the last ball) came after Harmison and Giles ran a brilliant two after the ball came off the boot of Giles. There was also a no-ball in the last over, as well as another one that looked well over the waist. Gough had been run-out the ball earlier by McGrath who turned as cool as you would like to hit the stumps.

The big crowd that packed into Lord's both supporting the Baggygreens and the hosts showed just how much they were entertained by giving great vocal support to their charges. Although England had fewer wickets down the rules of this competition state that it is the number of runs scored and nothing to do with having fewer wickets lost in the event of tied scores.

Andrew Symonds was the man of the series

British and Irish Lions Tour of New Zealand, 2005

Result: New Zealand 48-18 Lions

New Zealand has clinched the 2005 test series with the British and Irish Lions following a record victory against the Lions, and record points for Daniel Carter in what was a mouth-watering performance. The Lions who battled hard were blown away by wonderful rugby from the hosts in the second half.

The Lions dreams of levelling the 2005 test series with the All Blacks was shattered into many little pieces by an inspiring performance by the New Zealand side. The many large pockets of Lions supporters that packed the West Pac "Cake Tin" Stadium in Wellington was treated to a masterclass of rugby by the fearful All Blacks.

The Lions started sensationally well and gave a much much better performance than 7 days ago. Within the first minute the Lions had scored. Gareth Thomas with the try and Johnny Wilkinson - who later went off injured with that same shoulder injury - converted. But by the time the All Blacks had gone into the lead on 17 minutes, the Lions were simply brushed aside by a rampant New Zealand side that outclassed Clive Woodward's men.

Wilkinson could have put the Lions further in command with a 10 points to nil lead, but his penalty on 5 minutes clipped the post, and from then on the juggernaut called the All Blacks was released as the Lions were blown away. Wilkinson also missed a penalty just before adding 3 an attempted drop goal on 29 minutes.

Daniel Carter was sensational for the All Blacks who typified their inspirational performance. Carter grabbed two tries, 4 conversions and 5 penalties for a personal points tally of 33 showing why he is quite simply the world's best number 10. Carter was also at the centre of the first All Blacks try on 17 minutes, feeding Tana Umaga to cross the try line.

The Lions battled hard and tried to perform heroics with inventive rugby, but the All Blacks simply battered them. It was an immense performance from the All Blacks in both attach and defence and the stunned and shattered Lions tried hard to prevent try after try as the All Blacks went on wave after wave of attack.

The All Blacks scored 5 tries to the Lions 2, but this was a spirited performance from the Lions who even 48-18 down tried to cross the line with minutes left. But the strength of the All Blacks defence kept them out time and time again. Although the Lions took the lead the scoreline never looked back once New Zealand had taken the lead.

It was relentless stuff from the home side who went in 31-13 at half time. The second half score of 27-5 showed just why New Zealand are regarded as the best in world rugby. With the Lions needing the first score of the second period, it was Carter who sank the hearts of all Lions players, management and supporters with a penalty seconds into the half.

Moments later Carter with a sublime piece of play scored his first of two tries, both of which he converted. Although Simon Easterby claimed a Lions second half try on 65 minutes (he missed the conversion - Wilkinson had been replaced through injury on 57 minutes), it was the masterclass show from New Zealand that gave the home side more entertaining tries with 2 tries in seven minutes.

The passion and hunger the Lions showed was commendable and Gavin Henson did really well to prevent Gear scoring the first New Zealand try on 12 minutes. The Lions made far too many tactical errors that allowed Graham Henry's side to clear their lines when the visitors were in prime positions. This was all too evident on 27 minutes. The Lions had just got to within 3 points of their hosts, only for O'Connell to give away a penalty from the re-start that man of the match Carter put over to put New Zealand 16-10 in front.

Although the Lions tried to salvage something out of the game and keep the test series alive with victory, it was New Zealand who powered their way to yet another impressive victory.

The Lions will now travel to Auckland for next week's final test series, preparing to prevent a New Zealand All Blacks white-wash

Wilkinson kicks-off to begin the must win games for the lions

Today is the day of the second test between the All Blacks and the Lions, with the Lions needing to win in the Westpac Stadium. This really is the last chance saloon for the Lions to salvage some pride. A defeat would leave a Test defeat in the wake of the 2005 tour.

Once again the Lions support is big and noisy, backing the British and Irish Lions with full valour and effect - lets hope they can do it on the playing pitch! It is a much changed team from the one that lost last week 21-3 in Christchurch.

It is a totally different side that coach Sir Clive Woodward has chosen to face the All Blacks making no fewer than 11 changes.

The Lions have visited the "Cake Tin" already in this series when they beat the Provincial side Wellington in it - although today's opponents are a little bit different to Wellington!

Big Brother 2005

Saskia is out and the fifth evicted person, leaving just 3 females in the house!

Saskia became the latest person to be evicted by the public and was given a harsh welcome back to the real world by the noisy crowd.

The pathetic love-triangle of Saskia, Maxwell and the Big Brother cameras is finally over, with fellow housemates delighted that the Queen of 'Team Saskia' is finally out.

Visit the official site to find out why Anthony as been warned by Big Brother, and why the Orlaith thinks both him and Maxwell are just "little boys". Vanessa's food exclusion is finally over with BB finally allowing the dippy and boring Londoner to finally eat again.

From the bookies Maxwell is the favourite to be evicted next week and Derek is the new favourite to win Big Brother 2005 at 3/1 and is the top male at 2/1.

The loveable outspoken Tory has also ruffled the feathers of fanciful Craig by telling the hairdresser that he would not mind being up for eviction with him.

It looks odds on that next week's eviction will be between Craig and Maxwell who's plots in the house seem to be diminishing since the exit of their leader Saskia.

There are now just 3 females left in the Big Brother house with 7 males - Maxwell really needs to get at least 4 votes from his fellow housemates and face the eviction next week.
