JON STEAD IS GOING NOWHERE!

Town have rejected the offer from Blackburn Rovers. Blackburn upped the offer for Stead three times, the last one coming this morning - all were rejected! The offer for the 18 goal 20 year old striker is believed to have been well in excess of £1 million, with some reports stating as high as £1.7 million.

Blackburn found the ambitious Town Directors and Management under the guidance of owner Ken Davy, uncompromising as they rejected all offers for the popular former Academy player. Town fans will be delighted at this news and will sing the praises of both Stead (who Town highly rate) and the Town board in been able to keep the quality prospect in the blue and white of Huddersfield Town.

-

A piece of trivia between Huddersfield Town's young players and Black Rovers makes interesting reading. A player who just joined Chelsea from Blackburn for £17 million was on the verge of signing a first ever professional contract with Huddersfield Town.

The player in question is Damien Duff, who is now playing international football with Republic of Ireland, was brought to Town by Gerry Murphy and was a popular and hardworking junior with the club. Duff who was plying his trade with Town from the age of 14 to 16 was seen during a Youth Cup tie between Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers and was seen and liked by then Rovers manager Kenny Dalglish, who signed him on professional terms before Town had the chance to offer Duff the best contract Town would have ever offered to a junior player

Head to Head: versus Bristol Rovers

The last two match against Bristol Rovers have both ended in a 2-1 victory for Town, although there have been many draws between the two sides, with Town's only victory at Bristol Rovers coming back in October 1960 when Town triumphed 2-1. The last match was this season at the McAlpine Stadium, when an improving Town side hung on for a 2-1 victory, despite a late goal and late pressure from Rovers - Rob Edwards and Jon Stead secure Town's first win of the new season back in sunny August.

The other 2-1 victory came at Wembley in the 1994/1995 Play-Off Final when Town overcame a Marcus Stewart inspired Bristol Rovers to win promotion. Goals from Andy Booth and Chris Billy secured the win for then manager Neil Warnock.

There have been 29 matches in total with 79 goals. Town have secured 38 goals with 9 victories (the best a 4-1 home win in October 1961). Rovers have secured 11 wins scoring 41 goals (the biggest a 5-1 Twerton Park demolition of the Terriers in the 1988/1989 season).

At Bristol Rovers, Town have won only once (the West Country as never been the best of hunting grounds for Town) in 1960 with Bristol securing 6 wins (6 draws). Town scoring 12 goals, half of the goals that Rovers have put past Town.

This season could be a first for Town - securing a 'double' over the Rovers. Bristol Rovers have secured this on five occasion's!

With under a week left of the January transfer window, Town are bracing for a torrid of activity over star striker Jon Stead. 20 year old Stead whose has bagged 18 goals so far this season, as been watched by a plethora of top sides, has his form as put Town within touching distance of the leading three teams.

Although Town are set to make significant losses at the end of this season, Chairman Ken Davy says there is no pressure on manager Peter Jackson to sell Stead. Davy said that if a serious offer came in for Stead then Town would look at it, but if not, he is quite happy for him to continue pushing Town towards promotion.

Commenting on tonight's Survival Trust meeting to be held at the McAlpine Stadium (19:30), Ken Davy said that it would benefit the club if the Trust decides to put all the collated money thus far into the club.

Ken Davy said: "We have a balance of responsibility because, while we all want to see the club progressing and moving upwards, we have to recognise at the same time the need for long-term development from a strong foundation"

Last Match: York City 0-2 Huddersfield Town (result)

Two late goals from Danny Schofield and a first senior goal from David Mirfin won Town a thoroughly deserved three points at Bootham Crescent. The win, the sixth in a row for Town, propelled Town to a season best fifth in the division and edging ever closer to those important automatic promotion places.

With the game heading towards a draw manager Peter Jackson put on young David Mirfin (for Jon Newby) with 10 minutes remaining and in those five minutes, Mirfin created one and scored the other, which delighted the 3,375 Terriers in a decent Sunday crowd at York.

After a goaless even first half, Town took command and the late goals were full deserved for the McAlpine men. With six first team players missing, including the club captain, goal-keeper and two top goal scorers, the win and clean sheet delighted the happy Town boss - the only blip was a yellow card for Steve Yates.

A stubborn York City outfit who don’t lose nor concede many at home were finally worn down by a persistent Town, whose second goal from David Mirfin ended a sweet and competent Town move
-

The Teams: York City 0-2 Huddersfield Town

-

After the empathetic scoreline victory, which brought the Terriers a battling three points delighted manager Peter Jackson in what he called a "typical Yorkshire derby". The three points took Town to a season best fifth place in the league and revenge for the August 1-0 defeat at the hands of Chris Brass' side at the McAlpine Stadium.

Jackson wants his players to continue performing in the manner they are and with Town in contention Jackson wants his team to carry on because there is still a long way to go this season. The message to his players is "to keep on going". Jackson heaped praise again onto Nat Brown and his new striking partner Jon Newby and called goalscorer David Mirfin "a terrific prospect"
-

Jackson wanted before the game the travelling Town army to make as much noise as possible, well he will not have been disappointed as the Terriers in the crowd made an effort all afternoon and lifted the roof when Schofield put Town into the lead. Town fans turned fortress Bootham Cresecent (Town's victory there is only York City's third home defeat) into a home game and really spurred the Town players on
-

One thing that appears to be on Town players minds is the competition for places and that really appears to be stirring on the Town players. With so many players out injured, the Town players have rallied together to send the Terriers on the best winning run since the days of Steve Bruce in 1999 - on that occasion Town went to the top of the table!
-

Hull City and Doncaster Rovers have been joined by Huddersfield Town with the longest winning run. As Hull City won their sixth on the trot on Saturday, Town followed that up with a 2-0 win on the Sunday. Hull City lead the current form table (and the league table) with Town in second place. It is Hull first, Town second in the attendance tables to carry on the table theme, although Town are in fifth place in the overall league table
-

22/01/2004

Fans favourite Andy Booth should be back in the team to face York City on Sunday. Booth who has suffered in recent weeks with a hamstring injury will be on the bench as Town go on a revenge mission at Booth Crescent. Booth who has scored 10 goals this season will be looking to add to this, with manager Peter Jackson saying he "is a major part in taking this club forward"

Manager Jackson also said he would be starting with a unchanged squad who have been entertaining Booth on the sidelines
-

Only 40 tickets remain for the match with York City out of Town's allocation of 3,400 with the Town army set to have more than half the crowd at City's Bootham Crescent ground. Town who will be hoping yet another large following will be vocal in taking Town to a seventh consecutive victory. Jackson wants his team to just continue what they are doing, but is delighted that so many will be making the short journey to North Yorkshire.

Jackson commenting on the tremendous army of blue and white said: "Our away fans have been excellent all season", with Town taking a big following to Darlington, Boston, Rochdale and Bury already this season

Andy Booth, Ian Hughes, Rob Edwards and Jon Stead could all be missing for the match with York City on Sunday. Stead is the latest onto the injured list with a sore hamstring. Head to Head: versus York City

Huddersfield Town will be looking to revenge the 1-0 home defeat at the hands of York City, earlier this season with a win at York on Sunday. If Town secure the win, they will record their sixth straight win and move ever closer to their promotion rivals.

Town have won the lion-share of the matches over City. Of the 15 games played, Town have won 7 times, with three draws and five victories for the North Yorkshire club. Town also have scored the most goals (23) of the aggregate goals scored of 39.

There have been seven matches at York City, where Town have secured three wins scoring 11 of the 18 goals. There have been 2 defeats for Town including Town's last visit to Bootham Crescent. That game was during the Neil Warnock promotion season of 1994/1995, when an off-par Town went down 2-0 on November the fifth - a match remembered for the wrong reason, as a firework was thrown onto the pitch, resulting in a injury to Town's Iain Dunn.

The biggest win at York, ironically another promotion season for Huddersfield Town, from the corresponding division as the one Town are in now, saw Town run out 4-0 winners, during the exciting 1979/1980 season.

The last win for the Terriers coming 10 years ago, when Town secured a 2-0 win

Following the latest victory Town manager Peter Jackson was leading the praise on his young side. Jackson felt that Town was awesome during what he called a difficult game. Boston had come to the McAlpine Stadium happy for a point and made it difficult for Town to break them down. Peter Jackson felt the only disappointing part of the 2-0 win was the yellow card for Lee Fowler
-

17/01/2004

The statistics from the 2-0 victory over Boston United show just how much Town dominated and were on top against Boston. The only blip was the late yellow card for Lee Fowler, which was needless and will not do his chances of staying in the starting line-up any good, it clearly dissatisfied manager Peter Jackson.

The Terriers had 26 shots to United's 8 with Town having 15 on target as they plummeted the Boston goal towards the end of the first half and throughout the second period. Town had many more corners, many more attacks and much greater possession in the opposing half.

An all round terrific team performance with man of the match Nat Brown impressing again
-

Manager Peter Jackson will be again a delighted man following another victory for his side following some attractive penetrative attacking football
-

Town move up to 6th in the league following the 2-0 victory over Boston United. With Town winning it was good to see other teams around them losing. First placed Hull beat third placed Oxford United, second placed Doncaster Rovers also won - giving more indication of a Yorkshire 1,2,3 at the end of this season.

On better news for Town, Yeovil Town, Lincoln City, Mansfield Town all lost heavily whilst Swansea City managed only a 0-0 home draw with Cheltenham Town
-

Last Match: Huddersfield Town 2-0 Boston United (result)

Two goals in the second half sealed a fifth win on the trot for Huddersfield Town, as Town dominated and looked impressive as Efe Sodje and Anthony Lloyd scored the goals, their first for the club as Town ran out easy 2-0 winners at the McAlpine Stadium.

It took Town a long time to break down a stubborn Boston United side but after 71 minutes Town took the deserved lead. Fourteen minutes later Town extended on that through left-back Anthony Lloyd who scored following good work from Jon Stead.

In truth Town were on top with Peter Jackson's side stamping their full authority on the game, and it was one way traffic as the home side dominated the game. It was a good game at half time, with Boston United starting the better, but Town ended the better team towards the end of the half. However, that could have been very different if Boston midfield general Neil Redfearn had hit the back of the net rather than the woodwork after 10 minutes.

Town were exciting when attacking and the link play between Jon Stead and man of the match Nat Brown was quality. With Andy Booth still on the side lines Brown empathised keeping the striker position he has, and it was Jon Stead who was substituted for the returning Jon Newby from injury.

It was just what Peter Jackson wanted from a potential banana-skin match as Town made it five wins from the last five matches with the McAlpine men once again saying to the rest of this division… the boys from Huddersfield are back in Town!

The Black Cat's supremeo has said that they have money to spend on the right player. Fickling also said: "In the case of a player like Stead, you are investing in the future as well as the present. He is a player Mick believes could come in a make an immediate impact and we can see him having a bright future. We are allowed to bring in eight loan players over the course of the season and that is also an avenue we can seek to pursue. We are not resting on our laurels just because we have had a good run"

MATCH PREVIEW

Huddersfield Town v Boston United

Manager Peter Jackson will hope that Town's recent win of 4 matches can be extended upon when Boston United visit the McAlpine Stadium on Saturday. It will be Town's first ever home game against Boston and United's first visit to the McAlpine Stadium. The only other match between the two side's was earlier this season back in August when both sides drew 2-2 at York Road.

Jackson is hoping the side can continue their good defensive showing - a key the manager feels to the recent good form - in what he is predicting will be a tough battle against Neil Thomson's side who will feature Dewsbury born Neil Redfearn in midfield.

Boston United currently sit in 15th place in the league on 31 points, but have won only 8 points away from home (2 wins and 2 draws). Last time out they beat Macclesfield Town 3-1 and in their last away match beat Scunthorpe United 1-0. Boston have played many of the forward runners of the division on their travels but have lost to most of them. Hull City, Yeovil Town, Mansfield Town and Doncaster Rovers are all among their 9 away defeats. The only other win was at Southend United (2-0) with a point from Macclesfield (0-0) and York City (1-1). They were knocked out of the FA Cup 3-0 at Macclesfield Town.

Town are firm favourites to continue their winning ways and with Jon Newby in fine form for the reserves, coring both goals in a 2-1 victory at Bradford City provides a major boost for Jackson who still has Andy Booth struggling on the side lines.

A Booth-less Town may prove to be a tonic for Boston United, as it was Booth who came on a substitute and helped to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead for the Terriers. It is also likely that club captain Rob Edwards will have to be replaced, likely to be replaced by Lee Fowler (returning from suspension) due to an injury to Edwards, and Town will certainly be without Paul Scott and Tony Carrs.

New signing goalkeeper Paul Evans will be on the bench, with Phil Senior expected to be passed fit for the game, that means no place for junior keeper Jacob Giles. It also means that first choice keeper Ian Gray will be missing again through injury. Also missing through injury will be defender Ian Hughes.

Boston United have the worst away scoring record of the division with only seven goals scored, whilst at home Town have one of the best records for scoring goals and also not conceding them. With Boston United shipping 21 goals away from home, manager Peter Jackson must be hoping for a clean sheet and a few goals from his rapidly improving Town side.

Boston United who won the conference title in 2001/2002 will be hoping to improve on their away form in order to not risk dropping towards the relegation zone.

The last four games for both sides have not seen many goals in any of the matches. In total Town have scored 7 goals, with just 2 conceded in a tally of 12 points, Boston's record is scored 5 goals, with 4 conceded and six points.

It is going to be a tough game a fact acknowledged by Peter Jackson, but if Town can pull up their sleeves and battle hard, it should be another three points for the Terriers and continue their recent run

Jon Newby scored twice last night as Huddersfield Town reserves secured a 2-1 victory over Bradford City Reserves at Valley Parade. Newby was in exciting form for the 80 minutes he played which would have delighted watching first team boss Peter Jackson. David Mirfin, John Thorrington and Lee Fowler all played the full 90 minutes with no fresh injury worries recorded.

Peter Jackson said of Newby that "he impressed me" has the former Bury man returned to competitive football following a long layoff with injury. Paul Evans who ha just returned to the club showed positive signs of quality and could find himself pushed into the first team to face Boston United on Saturday should Phil Senior not recover fully from a knee complaint.

Newby scored on 48 and 58 minutes, and was set-up for the first by Chris Holland and the second Dwayne Mattis, he was subbed in the 80 minute for youngster John McAliskey. The City goal was scored late in the game by Michael Standing

Bradford City Team: Davies, Edds, Jacobs, Kearney, Reid, Folkes, Standing, Wolleaston, Branch, Forrest, Emanuel. Subs: Penford, Sanasy, Bentham, Flynn, Swift

Report from the official Bradford City internet site following the reserve win for Town:
Michael Standing scored a late stunner but Huddersfield Town again took the derby honours in the Pontin’s Holidays League clash at the Bradford & Bingley Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Huddersfield had the first chance after seven minutes but midfielder Dwayne Mattis was squeezed out by two City defenders. But after that the first half was all the home team.

Tom Kearney drifted a cross shot over the bar before Huddersfield keeper Paul Evans kept out Michael Standing’s free-kick with a fingertip save.

Evans continued to frustrate City first saving low from Kearney and then pushing a Branch effort over the bar after a lovely run and pass from Danny Forrest.

City continued to press but Evans did the trick again to deny Rob Wolleaston before saving once again from the livewire Branch at his near post.

Little had been seen of Huddersfield since their opening burst but just before the break Lee Fowler sparked a promising counter attack and from John Newby’s cross Adnan Ahmed shot straight at keeper Clint Davies.

Right on the half time whistle City went back on the attack and Forrest headed wide from Lewis Emanuel’s cross.

City swapped one Tom for another with Penford replacing Kearney in midfield but two minutes in found themselves a goal down. A long clearance from Evans took an awkward bounce, the defence mis-read it and Newby was there in a flash to steer the ball past the stranded Davies.

It was against the run of play but City had a good chance to respond in four minutes. But Standing made a complete hash of a free header and sliced it wide from a couple of yards out.

Wolleaston was taken off after 57 minutes as Kevin Sanasy was thrown on in the search for an equaliser. Fellow sub Penford immediately went close with a long-range drive, which Evans saved.

Lee Fowler jabbed wide on another Huddersfield counter before Tom Penford went close to an equaliser nearly turning home a scramble at the far post.

City won a free kick in a good position but Emanuel’s shot hammered into the wall and Paul Reid fired the rebound into the empty Carlsberg stand.

And with nine minutes left Huddersfield made it 2-0 as City again failed to deal with a long ball allowing Newby to coolly slot home his second of the night.

That stung City into an immediate response and from a corner Standing let fly from 25-yards into the top corner of the net

Huddersfield Town supporters should be proud and honoured of themselves after receiving massive credit from Cambridge United's Programme sales controller David Gray. Gray said that the fans that followed Town were a credit to the club and hoped that Town won promotion for the way the supporters behaved during the Terriers 2-1 victory over Cambridge at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday. This comes after Town fans got credit from Darlington following the Boxing Day visit to the Reynolds Arena.

The full text sent to the club by David Gray is:
"I have the some what dubious task of being the programme sales co-ordinator at Cambridge United.
This season, due to lack of sellers, also sees myself as a programme seller. Therefore, I had a lot of inter-action with your travelling support on Saturday whom I must complement your club on.
Over the last 15 or so years that I've worked at United, I have never encountered a group of fans so courteous, friendly and who showed a genuine interest in an opposition side.
It was indeed a real pleasure to have your fans at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday. It seems strange then, to wish that hopefully you won't be back soon as the promotion your fans richly deserve will (fingers crossed) be claimed in May.
They are not only a credit to your club but to the Division and Yorkshire. All the best for the rest of the season"

Joining Boro as the front runners for Stead is now first division play-off pushing Reading. Reading it is rumoured but be willing to do a part exchange deal for the striker with Shaun Goater offered to Town manager Peter Jackson or even recent Royal's signing Dave Kitson.

Town's next match with Cambridge United to be played at the Abbey Stadium is pay at the turnstile.

There is both seating and standing available. Seating is £15 for adults, with concessions of £10, standing is £12 and £8 in the South Stand and the southern section of the Habbin Terrace Stand.

It is around 191 miles to the match, as Town look to extend their recent good winning run against John Taylor's mid table side. Taylor's men lost 2-0 at Hull on Saturday, but drew 2-2 with Huddersfield Town on the opening Saturday of the football season. Jon Stead scored both Town's goal's on that afternoon.

It is worth pointing out the Cambridge have only won twice at home all season and have lost 6, and have a much better away record than they do at home - with Town's away record lets hope the stuttering U's at home continues when Peter Jackson's side visit!
-

With the January transfer window now opened Peter Jackson is expecting phone calls for leading goalscorer Jon Stead. Jackson who saw Stead score two more goals against Doncaster, create another in a all round impressive display by the number nine, who has now scored 15 goals this season, knows that interest will come in for Stead
-

A delighted Town manager Peter Jackson believes that Saturday's match, which was a pulsating and entertaining Yorkshire derby was a great "advert for third division football". The smile on Jackson's face showed what this third win on the trot meant to him and the players - and take this latest home win following a terrific performance more consistently away from the McAlpine Stadium
-

Peter Jackson felt it was a good performance from his young players, who "gave everything for the shirt". The inquest after recent games must have done the trick for the festive period but Town will need to take this recent winning formula into a tricking set of away fixtures beginning next Saturday at Cambridge United
-

Defender-cum-striker Nat Brown, who had a terrific game and caused Doncaster so many problems in a striker's role, feels that Town have a "good chance of getting promotion".

Town are back in the play-off zone following the 3-1 victory over Doncaster. Town also have a 2 goal positive goal difference sit in 7th place and are just nine from a automatic place. Oxford United's position at the top of the table was enhanced with Doncaster (who were in second) dropping to third. Hull City are now second. In the play-off's are Mansfield Town, Yeovil Town, Lincoln City and of course Huddersfield Town. Just below the Terriers are Swansea who have a game in hand (they did not play yesterday) and are a point behind Huddersfield. Martin Haythrone gave the overall match of the match to Huddersfield goalkeeper Phil Senior who he said was in "inspired form"
-

Huddersfield Town 3-1 Doncaster Rovers (result)

Impressive Town started 2004 in style with a bumper victory over South Yorkshire neighbours Doncaster Rovers infront of 13,044 supporters at the McAlpine Stadium.

It was a positive performance from the Terriers who attacked with flair and passion ended the festive period with nine points from a possible of nine. There was another two goals from Jon Stead and a late goal from Jon Worthington who secured the points for Town, who dominated Rovers all match despite missing five first team players, including striker Andy Booth.

The impressive Stead was watched by over 20 scouts who had come to see how Town's leading marksman faired against the inform Doncaster side who are renowned for their passionate never-say-die attitude.

Both Stead goals were set-up by stand-in striker Nat Brown, with Stead creating the opportunity for Worthington to seal the points. The only blip on the scoresheet came when the totally outplayed Rovers scored in the 71st minute through Gregg Blundell. Town also ended the game without a booking, but needed goalkeeper Phil Sneior to pull off a spectacular one-handed save to deny Dave Penny's side an undeserved equaliser. Despite that, with the next attack Town scored through Worthington to seal the points and the victory.

The victory was no more than Peter Jackson's side deserved in front of their second biggest crowd of the season, while stuttering Doncaster need to quickly rediscover their form if they are to claim one of the automatic promotion places.
Town dominated the first half and with defender Nat Brown performing heroics as a makeshift striker, Town caused all sorts of problems for the visiting defence.
With Worthington dominating in midfield it was something of a surprise that it took Huddersfield 42 minutes to break the deadlock
-

Even a Doncaster Rovers Internet site said that the 3-1 scoreline to Town did not flatter the Terriers, nor would one of 4 or 5 goals to the homeside. The DonnyMassive site on the rivals.net network believes that Doncaster were very nervous to go forward and that the pace of Jon Stead caused the Donny defence trouble all afternoon. Martin Haythrone who wrote the article felt that Peter Jackson got the tactics just right for the match with the red and white hoops of Doncaster Rovers

The Doncaster reporter gave Jon Stead "mixed pace, aggression and excellent finishing" and has everyone connected with Huddersfield Town know, Stead would do well at an higher level. Haythrone says that Leo Fortune-West was the Rovers man of the match, however the big striker whose duel with big Efe Sodje of Huddersfield Town was a major highlight of the match, should have seen red following his elbow striking the side face of Town defender Nathan Clarke
-

It will be Doncaster's first ever meeting to the McAlpine Stadium, earlier this season at Belle Vue the scoreline was a 1-1 draw
-

Midfielder Tony Carss looks likely to miss the game with Doncaster, has he is rated only 50/50 following injury. It is a big blow for manager Peter Jackson who was hoping that Carss will have been fit for the contest, due to the suspension of Lee Fowler.
