Marcus Stewart talks to Sunderland's official site, on how he is relishing a return to the McAlpine Stadium:

Marcus Stewart will tonight make an emotional return to the club where he made his name in football.

The Sunderland striker is guaranteed a hero's welcome at the McAlpine Stadium after scoring 58 goals in 129 starts in a hugely successful three-and-a-half-year spell with Huddersfield.

Stewart describes his stay with the Terriers as "the best time of my career", and his inclusion in Mick McCarthy's squad is sure to bolster the gate in the pre-season match. He said: "I'm really looking forward to going back. I haven't been back since I left and it will be nice to go and see a lot of friends. I still talk to a lot of people at Huddersfield. "I think when they sold me Huddersfield were third and Ipswich were fourth. Huddersfield didn't even get to the play-offs that year.

"I hope things start turning around for them soon because I'm genuinely still a fan. There's only two teams I support and they are Huddersfield and Bristol City." Terriers fans were up in arms when Stewart was sold to Ipswich for £1.2m in February 2000 and it marked the beginning of a decline that culminated in them dropping into the Third Division last season. He added: "We were in the highest position the club has been for 30 years, third in Division One just before I was sold.

It was the best time of my career to date. "It wasn't unexpected when I left the club because there had been speculation about it, that I was a player they wanted to sell." Sunderland go to west Yorkshire looking to get back to winning ways after Saturday's draw at Grimsby.

And Stewart insists that the mood in the Black Cats' camp is good and that McCarthy's players are looking forward to the big kick off. He said: "The pre-season has gone really well so far and I'm feeling good. We have scored a lot of goals this summer and looked solid and hopefully we can carry that on into the season. "The pre-season is good for building up the confidence ahead of the real thing.

But that's when we have to do it, in the proper games when the season gets started. That's the time to start judging players, not now. "It's the worst thing in pre-season when you get one or two niggling injuries. You just want to be fit for the start of the season. You've got to make sure you are right for the 50-odd games that we're going to have. "Nearly every team that is playing in the First Division this year will be saying they want promotion - we're no different.

"There's more pressure here than at other clubs. This is a big club and we need to be able to handle that pressure."

(03/07/03) Town made two signing's today. Rob Edwards returns to the club from Chesterfield (1 year deal), whilst quality striker Jon Newby joins from Bury on a two year deal.

Both players joined with their new team mates who returned to training. There was 18 players in total, with them Adie Moses, 4 are currently injured and took no part.

Newby should address Town's lack of goals, whilst Edwards will help solve the right-back situation and with his versatility will play anywhere for Town…. I am sure you can remember Robbie's contribution to that famous goal in Town's 1-0 win at Maine Road in Jackson's last spell as manager…one of the most memorable goals of recent years, if not of all time

The friendly due to take place between Town and Bradford City at the McAlpine as been cancelled due to the cost to police the game. West Yorkshire Police was demanding full payment for the "money-making" game, which Town regarded it as a competitive match and thus some of the £30,000 reported fee would have been met by the Police Authority. West Yorkshire Police regarded this to be a high-category fixture, despite Town believing there would not be a sizeable crowd
It now makes the fixture at Halifax high on the possible axing list!

As expected last season's top scorer Martin Smith has left Huddersfield Town to join third division rivals Northampton Town. Smith who came to Town for £300,000 by Steve Bruce is owed £258,975 in unpaid wages. Maybe Jacko could look at striker Jamie Fullerton who was recently released from Brentford. Having seen him play for St. Mirren he would have the passion Jacko would love
