Huddersfield Town v Stockport County, Coca-Cola League 1, August 09, 2008, 15:00

Football is back!

The first match of the highly anticipated 2008/2009 season takes place on Saturday August 9th at the Galpharm Stadium, as the Terriers welcome League One newcomers Stockport County.

County secured their place in League One with a play-off victory at Wembleyt (3-2) over Rochdale.

History proves in favour of a Terriers victory with Town enjoying 12 victories from the 21 matches played in Yorkshire. County have secured just 3 victories, with 6 draws. On average Town have scored 1.95 goals per match to the visitors 0.90.

The last match at the Galpharm Stadium between the two sides was in March 2005 when Huddersfield completed the double over County with a 5-3 win. That season Stockport were relegated, but did beat Town in the FA Cup first round in Stockport.

Town's overall record against Saturday's opponents is also far greater with 20 wins from the 44 matches played. 11 draws and 12 Stockport wins make up the rest of the historical matches against County. Town have scored 64 goals to County's 56 goals.

Town also enjoyed a narrow 1-0 victory at Stockport in the Autoglass Trophy tournament at the northern quarter finals stage. It was in the season under Neil Warnock that the Terriers progressed through to the final with Swansea City.

The last time County visited Huddersfield and went home with anything was a point from a 0-0 draw in January 2001, the season prior to that County won 2-0 in 1999/2000, when two early goals ensured a very disappointing home loss for Town in the now Championship league.

Town will be hoping for a opening day repeat of 2004/2005 when they visited Edgeley Park and came back with three points. Despite losing 2-1 with minutes to go late goals from Andy Booth and Pawel Abbott gave Town an amazing victory, after County had taken the initiate (Luke Beckett scoring one of their goals) after Tony Carss had given Town the lead just before half time.

The home fixture that season - that 5-3 game, saw five different goalscorers for Town in a lively encounter which saw Warren Feeney score an hat-trick for County. County had taken the lead on just 2 minutes, but moments later Andy Booth had equalised. That's how the scoring stayed until 51 minutes when Abbott gave Town the lead.

Two further goals from Feeney (one a penalty) gave County back the lead, until the last 8 minutes when David Mirfin, Adnan Ahmed and a Joe Dolan own goal sealed a dramatic win over County for Town for the second time that season.

Less dramatic victory for Town would be nice on Saturday, but whatever happens a win would go down well.
