Huddersfield Town v Bradford, Carling Cup Round 1, August 12, 2008, 19:45

After the largely disappointing opening league one match on Saturday which Town boss Stan Ternent called "rubbish", the Terriers will be hoping to get their 08/09 cup run off to a flying start in the Yorkshire Derby tomorrow evening.

League Two side Bradford City travel the short distance down the M606 and across the M62 to face their West Yorkshire rivals. The League Two favourites got their season off to a great start with a 2-1 Valley Parade victory Saturday and with it showed they are justified the favourites tag.

With promotion high on the City agenda this season and more big gates at Valley Parade expected this will be a test for Stan Ternent's side very early on in the season. Town will be expecting to taste victory in and progress past the first stage in the competition since 2005/2006, if our own promotional aspirations from League One are to be given a early season boost.

Last season Town went out of this competition at the first hurdle with a 1-0 defeat at Blackpool, the season before a disappointing 2-0 loss at Mansfield Town at the first stage ended Town's League Cup hopes who have a semi-final placing as a best finish in 1967/1968.

Against Bradford in the League Cup Town have never tasted defeat from the two matches played. The two legged affair in August 1997, saw Town take a 2-1 lead to Valley Parade after the first leg. A Wayne Burnett late equaliser for the Terriers levelled 1-1 in Bradford after the home side had taken an early lead.

The last 'cup win' at Valley Parade came in 1992 when Iain Dunn and Kieran O'Regan scored the goals in a 2-0 FA Cup win. The only other cup match played was an FA Cup 5th round tie when Town won 2-1 at Leeds Road in February 1930.

8,720 turned up to the League Cup first leg in 1997, due to the lack of City/Town derby match last season, significantly more are expected this season certainly travelling in the claret and amber of Bradford City. A big gate could be secured by Town if they do a special pricing initiative for this match, ticket news to follow later.

This match will also be the first Town/City match since 2006 when Town defeated Bradford in both league matches to help relegate City from League One. A 1-0 victory (Hudson) at Valley Parade was followed up with a 2-0 March win under caretaker manager Gerry Murphy. A third minute goal from loanee Paul Hayes gave Town the perfect Galpharm start and the victory was confirmed with 15 minutes remaining when Danny Schofield scored.

Recent history of matches between the two sides is with Town, having won three of the last four matches and drawn the fourth.

Historically the matches between the Terriers and the Bantams have proved to be close and often exciting with plenty of talking points. But in the cup competitions Town have never tasted defeat at the hands of the Bantams.

Town won 2-1 in the FA Cup in February 1930 there was a 1-1 draw in the Associate Members competition. Town defeated City 2-0 at Valley Parade in December 1992 (FA Cup), until the last cup meetings mentioned above.

This will be the 50 match between the two sides with Town winning 19 to City's 13. The Terriers have scored 68 of the 130 goals with an average of 1.39 goals per game to City's 1.27.

Of the 23 matches on Huddersfield soil Town have the honours again with 10 wins, 7 draws and 6 visitor wins. Town have outscored Bradford by on average 0.52 goals per game with 35 goals to 23. Town will be hoping that their strike force can score the goals tomorrow evening to win the match and the defence can shut out Peter Thorne who was scored both Bantams goals Saturday.

This match will be the first in which a Town manager has been able to announce seven substitutes. For next season all FA and Carling Cup matches will allow seven named subs, although only three will be allowed to change with a starting eleven.

Although this will be a difficult contest, we feel that following the 'roasting' Ternent will have dished out following Saturday's 1-1 draw with Stockport County Town will be fired up and enjoy victory in this West Yorkshire derby.

Ternent, who used to be an assistant manager at Bradford City will be issuing the direct instruction that a victory tomorrow is essential, but Stuart McCall will also have his side fired up, as will the travelling Claret and Amber army who visit the Galpharm Stadium for the first time in sixteen months.

All the while upon the field of play,
Thousands gladly cheered them on their way,
Often you could hear them say,
Who can beat the Town today?

Then the bells shall ring so merrily,
Every goal shall be a memory,
So Town play up and bring the cup,
Back to Huddersfield
