Robbie Edwards
Rob celebrates his play off goal in the 2-2 second leg against Lincoln City
Posted: 08/01/09

The next player to feature in Legends is 38 year old Robert (Rob) Edwards born on February 23, 1970 in the 'Blue Side' of Manchester.

Rob will always be fondly remembered by Huddersfield Town fans, as a player who would go on to captain the side with a passion and desire that rightly befits the honour of the status of Captain of our great club. Robbie did this with the utmost determination during this second spell with the Terriers.

Rob had two spells with the Terriers from March 1996 to September 2000 then returning to help take Town out of the dark days of Administration in July 2003 before retiring at the end of the 2004/2005 campaign. His second spell coincided with the return of Peter Jackson has first team manager, a feat only one other Town manager (full time) as done in the club's history - one Tom Johnston. Brian Horton was the manager who bought Rob for his first spell at the club for a fee of £150,000.

In total Rob played in 141 league matches for Town (another 39 from the subs bench), seven FA Cup matches (one more from the bench), 14 League Cup matches (one more from the bench) and two other fixtures (one more from the bench - these fixtures were the successful play-offs 2003/2004). In all matches Rob scored 20 goals whilst proudly wearing the blue and white.

Rob will be remembered for the goal he scored against Lincoln City at Town which levelled the scores on the night at 2-2 after the Terriers were down 2-0 at half time. Anyone who was there will never forget the jubilant scenes as Town booked their place in the League Two play off final. The Edwards goal gave Town a 4-3 aggregate lead after two pulsating encounters with Lincoln City.

Edwards 20 yard schemer in front of the North Stand (the then Panasonic Stand) left the majority of the 20,000 plus crowd delighted and the friendly pitch invasion that followed had manager Peter Jackson drenched in champagne, and a place in folklore for Robbie Edwards.

Edwards also scored in the penalty shoot out coming on as a extra time substitute as Town gained promotion at Cardiff. The club captain had helped take Town from near extinction to promotion in the first season under the new regime and had helped put the pride and honour back into the club and Huddersfield back on the footballing map.

But perhaps the most talked about goal Edwards scored for Town came at Manchester City in November 1997. After a glorious Terriers move Edwards capped it off by scoring the goal in a 1-0 victory at Maine Road in front of the SKY Sports Television cameras click here for a video of that goal. Edwards was an integral part of the Peter Jackson side that produced one of the greatest of 'Great Escape' across English football history (1997/1998 season)!

In his career he also played for Crewe where he started and Chesterfield. He left Town for Chesterfield and returned to us from them. He scored on his Town debut in Division One at Luton Town on March 9th 1996 in a 1-0 victory. His final Town match was on April 20th 2005 at home. He came on as a substitute in a 4-0 victory over Swindon Town. Fittingly enough Edwards scored the fourth goal of the match on 85 minutes. The reception Robbie got at his last game, is still remembered to this day from a man who still holds the club so close to his heart.

Peter Jackson donned the phrases "Keep The Faith" and "Be proud and honoured to wear the shirt" that was never more evident that with Rob Edwards who rightfully is included in our Legends section. Rob now lives in the Kirklees area.

Now over to Rob's view of Huddersfield Town then and now ...

1 What is your impression of Huddersfield Town now?
A club who should be playing in the Championship.

2 What did you think on joining Town?
First time - Great club with high standards. Loved it.

Second time - No hesitation, wanted to get the club back up the leagues.

3 Any regrets later in leaving Town.
None, would of liked another season perhaps but that wasn't down to me. Loved my time in both spells.

4 Memories of Town? Earliest-vivid-now
Scoring on debut v Luton (1996).

Scoring against Man City away (live on SKY).

Promotion (scoring in play off semi) (scoring first penalty).

Scoring on my last game versus Swindon Town.

5 Most memorable moment? Goal-save-tackle
Apart from those goals mentioned above, being told I was Club Captain.

6 Longest lasting Town memory?
Scoring against Man City, my boyhood hero's.

7 What do you think of the current state of soccer?
Money and foreign players have taken the game over, not enough home grown talent.

8 Do you still follow the Town results or any other Club or Sports?
Oh yes every time they play and Man City obviously.

9 Your best match in a Town shirt and Why? and the Result?
Man City away, I'm a City fan.

It was a well worked goal and it was live on SKY. We won 1-0 and it was part of our great escape season.

10 What do you think of the Town fans - then? & now?
Brilliant, cannot fault them. Honest lot. The reception I received in my last game was breath taking. Brilliant.

11 What do you think the future holds for Town?
Hopefully a steady manager (note Rob completed the interview with thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk before the appointment of Lee Clark) to build a team to get Town back into the Championship.

12 What are you doing now?
I have my own joinery business with my mate Richard.

R & R Joinery.

Details of the company via Yell.com - thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk inclusion. Town fans need a joiner, give Rob a call!!

13 If you had one wish, what would it be?
To win the lottery and become a member of Town's board and get VIP treatment on matchdays.

and finally, anything else you would like to say?
On a serious note...

I wish Town all the very best for the future. The club and fans deserve to be playing at a higher level and hope fully the next manager can achieve this sooner rather than later (note Rob completed the interview with thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk before the appointment of Lee Clark).

Thanks for taking part Rob in the Legends feature, and thanks for helping the club out of the doldrums of Administration into some sort of football parity. Long may your goal against Lincoln City that took us to Cardiff for the Play Off Final be fondly remembered by Town fans.
