Joey Jones

Legends - Joey Jones

Joey Jones, a cult hero to so many, especially Wrexham AFC and the Welsh nation, but also Liverpool & Chelsea. How many players have the honour and respect of so diverse a following and that does not include the love and affection he built up in just two seasons with us.

Much has been written about this Bangor boy (born in 1955) who went on to conquer Europe I'll give you two very personal ones.

Whilst having treatment one day at Leeds Road he told me he always knew he would play for Huddersfield Town! I was shocked at this a top international who had played at the very highest level expecting one day to play for my team, our Town. Oh yes, he said. In fact one of the football magazines had done an article on him some time past and in it he was quoted saying just that.

What pride I felt, the very top players don't come to us do they? We either produce them ourselves and watch as they move on to greater glory on greener pastures or they come to us as wee boys, example the King, Denis Law. Joey Jones always wanted to play for us.

My second abiding memory was following him breaking the record for the greatest Welsh international appearances, a game I watched at the Racecourse with chest bursting with pride for this was a Huddersfield Town player On returning to Leeds Road there on my desk were his international shorts. I had to ask Joey to autograph them!

Joey helped Liverpool win two European Cups, two League Championships and reach the FA Cup final, and took part in a memorable Wales defeat of England. He was and remains a football fanatic.

Thankfully this oh so proud Welshman despite health problems is still going strong in the land he never left. He has just brought out his autobiography - Oh Joey, Joey. My life in Football. (To purchase Joey's book click here)

Thanks to Joey Jones Town fans in there thousands had two seasons with him in their ranks, a special time for us and him and one that ensures this son of Wales will always hold a very special place in our hearts.

Left-back Joey joined the Terriers from Chelsea in 1985 and scored three times in 68 appearances. After two season he moved back to Wales to re-join Wrexham.

1 What is your impression of Huddersfield Town now?
Same as when I was there, great club, great supporters, brilliant stadium, smashing people in charge.

2 What did you think on joining Town?
Very proud to be playing for a club of such great tradition, and Leeds Road was an absolute joy to play on

3 Any regrets later in leaving Town.
The way I left wasn't the way I wanted to leave, too much I'm afraid to go into detail!

4 Memories of Town? Earliest-vivid-now
Nellie who did the kit, what a great woman. Brian and Jean who still I think do the kit and other jobs. Friends that I made, such as Dave and Irene Robb.

5 Most memorable moment? Goal-save-tackle
Beating Bradford at home, I think we scored 5

6 Longest lasting Town memory?
Being named player of the year in my first season, a real honour.

7 What do you think of the current state of soccer?
I'm not that keen on the premiership (players don't really recognise the fans) I'd rather watch the leagues from Championship down to league 2.

8 Do you still follow the Town results or any other Club or Sports?
Yes, I also like boxing

9 Your best match in a Town shirt and Why? and the Result?
I don't know about best match, but the one against Millwall when we had to win to make sure we stayed up. I scored my only goal at Leeds Road to help us win, also it was my last game for Town.

10 What do you think of the Town fans - then? & now?
They were great to me and I appreciated that, I have seen them recently and they are still as fanatical.

11 What do you think the future holds for Town?
At this moment I think Town have a great chance of gaining promotion and I hope they do, in Peter Jackson and Terry Yorath they have a great management team. [This article came through to thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk in the middle of the 2006/2007 season]

12 What are you doing now?
Working with the reserves and young lads at Wrexham F.C.

13 If you had one wish, what would it be?
To start my career all over again.

and finally, anything else you would like to say?

Just to thank everyone, like yourself David, for making me so welcome when I joined Town and to wish Huddersfield all the luck in the world with their push for promotion.

Thanks to Joey for taking part in the Legends feature, good luck to him and Wrexham for next season - Joey is currently in the management team at the Racecourse Ground.
