Father Christmas comes early for all you readers of ‘Legends’ this is a special for the older Town fan but how the current crop of supporters would love this man dominating the ’Pharm. Born: Ellesmere Port, October 30, 1929 Joined Town in 1955 from Aston Villa, before leaving to rejoin Everton in 1957 Town Games: 54 Town Goals: 28 Total: Games: 404, Total Goals: 182 Position: Centre Forward Just what he would cost if available on today’s market goodness knows. A few of the superlatives accorded to him include ‘Cannonball Kid’, dashing is a more exclusive title, add on unswerving, committed and given to getting into the occasional scrape with officials and opponents. Oh yes when men were men back in the 1950’s no yard was given either way nor were handbags on view and more than one centre half has felt the full force of Dave Hickson's – let us politely say power. thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk is indebted to Everton Football Club for putting us in touch with the now 76 year old. Go on to their past players section on the EFC website and read what the Toffees feel about the Ellesmere Port born striker then look at the same section of the website for the club across Stanley Park - links to both articles are at the end of this feature. This man is no mere mortal he actual played for both the Blues and the Reds! Thought I was joking about his fighting spirit? Well there you have the proof and what testimonies they write just as we here are now going to enlighten you about the far too short a time Mr Hickson spent at Leeds Road. Here Mr Hickson writes exclusively for thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk: What is your impression of Huddersfield Town now? I was invited recently and found it very impressive and friendly What did you think on joining Town? I heard Huddersfield was interested in me, I thought it was a great challenge with Andy Beattie and Bill Shankly as managers; Any regrets later in joining/leaving Town? I had no regrets joining Huddersfield, but couldn’t resist joining my old club "Everton" which I joined when I was 14 years old Memories of Town Travelling "ON TRAIN" to play Liverpool, our team was late. Huddersfield was fined, K/o late we won 2-1. I scored the winner in the KOP, which was memorable on the day. This game provided Dave with his best match in a Town shirt for obvious reasons. Most memorable moment? When Denis Law joined, I could see he was going to be a great prospect Longest lasting Town memory? We had great team spirit, and didn’t deserve to go down after winning our last home game What do you think of the current state of soccer? There has been a great change in football, and perhaps players are more protected, and have more opportunities than we did Do you still follow the Town results or any other club or sports? YES I always look for the results of the teams I played for What do you think of the Town fans? Then & Now? We played in front of bigger crowds at Leeds Road, but Huddersfield have always had good supporters What do you think the future holds for Town? I feel their aim is to get promotion, and finally reach the Premiership, which I hope they will do What are you doing now? Working part-time at Everton FC on stadium tours also doing P.R. on match days If you had one wish what would it be? To stay healthy, also to stay in the game I love; ... and finally, anything else you would like to add ... I enjoyed my time at Huddersfield, I played some of my best football with them, and I wish them every success in the future. What a truly magnificent man and player one who despite only a brief career at Town very quickly and most firmly became a Terrace favourite. Town fans have always loved a trier, someone who gives everything, who battles to the end and doesn’t mind taking a few knocks along the way. Dave Hickson fits that bill to a T. Dave Hickson has also been described as "A gladiatorial centre forward", and with his good looks and blonde quiff, this full hearted player was a star on and off the pitch in his own right. Thank you, Sir for taking the time and trouble to enable us to make you a ‘Legend’. Read Hickson's piece on the Everton website - from their giants section Read Hickson's piece on the Liverpool website - from their past players section
Following the article, a Town fan gave us his memories of Dave Hickson: I remember 16 year old Denis Law getting 'the treatment' from a thuggish Port Vale defender. A few minutes later said defender was dwelling on the ball near the touchline on the Popular side just above where I was standing. A sudden blue and white flash (Dave Hickson) launched a ferocious tackle on the defender sending him across the cinder track into the crowd a couple of yards away from me. Dave then stood above him glaring down at him and said "If you touch that kid again I'll bl.... do you". Referee sensibly said, "Come on you two, get on with it". A man's game in those days. No bookings, no fuss, and Denis then left in peace to continue strutting his stuff and dancing his magic through the Port Vale defence. |
