Click here to go back to the main Legends Page Allan Gilliver For the second in our 'Legends' feature we again have a number 9 and again a player associated with both Town and along the road at Bradford City - Allan Gilliver. A robust, no nonsense type of player who on leaving Leeds Road, when our top-scorer, for Blackburn Rovers saw a large chunk of his transfer fee returned to the Lancashire club following an appeal to the FL, because of a back injury! My memories of AG are very much his early years in the Reserves where he struck up a potent striking partnership with John Rudge, former Port Vale Manager for many years and now with their arch-rivals Stoke as Director of Football. I remember a incident in a end of season reserve fixture at Leeds Road, we won 4-1 but I forget the opponents although Derby County seems familiar, in April and Town's second string were attacking the 'open end'. A move developed down our left a cross was put in towards the edge of the box level with the left hand post, Gilly half facing backwards to goal, pivoted and let fly with such force the ball screamed goal wards and struck the crossbar with such force, I swear it shook for weeks afterwards! Funny how you remember little incidents like that. Back to the present and an excellent club/sleeping giant is how Allan sees Town today who on joining us as a 15 year old saw it as exciting times, and on looking back had no regrets in joining Town, or when the time came leaving. For his memories of Town he can remember cleaning the old Leeds Road ground up and making a losing debut (v Bradford City) but scoring in this match provides Allan with his most memorable moment. For his longest lasting Town memory he picks what many Town fans of that era would pick for him also. Scoring a hat-trick v Middlesborough in August 1965. This gave Town a trio of wins to commence the season, no goals conceded and 9 scored. But as regular readers to "Those were the days ... " will remember it was the - Coventry - season when we just missed out on promotion Whilst following the fortunes of all his former clubs, Gilly on asked his opinion on the current state of soccer answered 'not a lot'. The Town fans though have not altered being a good lot when he played for us and still good now. For the future, hopefully, promotion for the Terriers. Currently he is a consultant to Bradford City FC. Alan's one wish is to be happy and live a long time with no ailments. He signed off with a "Good Luck" message to both Town & the Bantams. A big thank you to Mr G for being a 'Legend' and we very much hope that the future brings both health and happiness for him and his nearest & dearest |
