He is the voice of Night sport on BBC Radio Leeds. Avid Town fan Adam Pope also commentates on Town games and has close contact with the players and Peter Jackson. He is well known with town supporters and used to commentate on matches at Leeds Road for Huddersfield Hospital Radio
Adam is a valuable asset to the Radio Leeds broadcasting team, and here he gives an in-depth interview to This is The Barmy-Army.
Did you know? Adam was commentating at Goodison Park when Wayne Rooney scored that special goal to sink Aresnal? The former Huddersfield student, is now very much a Town follower and believes that the current squad of players is the most exciting he has ever come across.
Adam answers questions of a topical nature, on a occupational level and of course on our beloved Huddersfield Town.
Question |
Adam's answerWhat is your Name?
Adam Pope
What is your Place of Birth?
Liverpool
What is your Age?
37
What is your current role with Radio Leeds, and how do you like working in the media and with Radio Leeds?
Broadcast Journalist. This means that I commentate, present, report, interview and read sports bulletins. Job satisfaction is immense compared with the work I used to do up until five years ago when I decided to go for a career change. I also work for other BBC stations because you have to start as a freelancer until you gain a staff position. Job security is an issue but it is a great career
Describe a typical day in your life
On non-match day it might start at 9 am interviewing Peter Jackson and a few players either at the McAlpine or at Storthes Hall before chasing back to the BBC studio in Leeds to edit the material for the sports bulletins and also for the West Yorkshire Sport programme on match day. Whilst doing that I collate all the other sports material and audio to read at lunchtime across the region for West Yorkshire and East Yorkshire.
In the afternoon I prepare all the audio and material to read four bulletins per hour across four BBC stations. A lot of time is also spent calling guests to appear on various shows whether it be the Football Hour, West Yorkshire Sport or Nightsport. Somewhere in between I have to try and research the facts and figures for each commentary game. Match day is the jewel in the crown. The away trips are a real buzz because you have to be really well prepared for any eventuality and have your wits about you. When the game was called off at Northampton I had to still make sure that all the information is relayed back to the listeners, interviews are grabbed, police and referees spoken to, etc
How would people describe you in three words?
Hardworking, cheeky and determined
What is your favourite work-related memory?
Above all it was commentating on Wayne Rooney's goal to beat Arsenal at Goodison Park last season. I have never seen anything like it. Pure genius and I lost it. I was commentating for BBC London at the time.
With BBC Leeds I think Andy Booth's second debut goal on his return to the club and Pawel Abbott's goal at Bristol Rovers. Halifax Town's Craig Middleton's late equaliser at Lincoln which meant they needed one more point from two games for survival as few years ago in Division Three. As for Bradford it will be Lewis Emmanuel's screamer at Cardiff this season and for Leeds it will be speaking to Harry Kewell after he left the club to join Liverpool
What is your connection to HTAFC?
I live in Huddersfield having been a student in the Town. Its natural that I support them. I started out doing Huddersfield Hospital Radio commentaries at Leeds Road and then progressed from there
How long have you supported the Terriers?
I have been watching Town on and off since 1986
Who would you regard has your favourite all time HTAFC player?
It has to be Andy Booth followed by Rob Edwards in the time I've been watching the club. Marcus Stewart was excellent and Jon Stead will surpass them all eventually. Out of the current crop I think Nathan Clarke will go on to greatness
What is your greatest ever Town game?
When Rob Edwards hammered the late winner in the 3-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers
Do you think the Terriers will be promoted this season?
Yes, automatically
What has been the most frustration element of the season to date?
Red cards which could prove costly in the run in
Do you have any affection to any other club?
Everton
Are you interested in any other sport?
Rugby both codes and Golf
You have interviewed many people - who has been the most memorable and why?
Denis Lillee for his sense of humour and down to earth manner despite being a legend. Robbie Paul and Mick Quinn were excellent too.
The Huddersfield players are excellent to deal with from the manager and coach through to all the youngsters. Phil Senior, Andy Holdsworth and Anthony Lloyd are excellent to speak to and will always help out
Name your best Town side ever!
I would have to settle for what we have now. My best 11 would have Stead, Booth, Shearer and Stewart all up front! This squad is the most exciting thing I've come across in a long time and because I speak to them regularly they are the best thing about Huddersfield Town to me
What is your opinion of This is The Barmy-Army Internet site and will you visit the site in the future?
Excellent and yes it's in my favourites!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to get involved within media?
Dig in, never give in and never listen to anyone who says no without a reason
Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Hopefully still with the BBC doing World Cups etc!
