A Discussion with Dean
|
|
Coming from our feature write David A Wood, who is the name behind Those Were The Days and the Legends feature on thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk, we hope you enjoy this special feature "A Discussion with Dean" ... " Not a " Those Were The Days" or a "Legends" feature though it is up there with both as a momentous moment when Town's Chairman elect Mr Dean Hoyle gave me a call! Now I have been blessed to know many Town officials in my time but never before has the very top man got in touch and just to talk Town at that. My first reaction was to thank him for that day Thursday 10th April 2008 when headlines proclaimed 'Town sold to Local Businessman and Town fan'. With the emphasis on one of us. When 199 years and counting is written I believe 10-04-08 will be acknowledged as the day our Club re-asserted itself and began a further climb up the footballing ladder. That he is a fan like you and me is not in doubt, but he is a businessman with a bit of brass, okay then a fair bit, enough as he may well have put it! How well these two (fan and money!) go together for the benefit of Huddersfield Town Football Club and all who love her. A true man of the blue and white stripes with commercial acumen to spare someone who is here because he has never been anywhere else. That he his willing to commit his own personal fortune to the rebirth of the Terriers is more than proof of his intentions. I for one have always had a dream of owning Town and running it my way and winning Championships and Cups and having my name chanted all around the ground. But given the opportunity of doing so, how many truly would risk their own hard earned cash? - Suddenly the queue shortens. Roman Abramovich he will tell you 'he is not' but he is more than capable of providing backing to ensure as a starting requirement a Championship level status. Firstly, though, we have to get there and vital to all his plans are YOU the Town fans. Mr Hoyle put it oh so plainly, without you there is no club. Quite simply you are the club - of that there is no question. Attracting old and new fans is vital and so we have the superb £100 season ticket offer. Superb is my word, for Dean believes it a reasonable price only if we produce on the field. So to the new managerial team of Stan Ternent and Ronnie Jepson. That the new Gaffer is an unexciting appointment to some is perhaps true. But like a fellow Geordie many years ago similar was said of Mick Buxton who went on to become our most successful manager of recent times. Unquestioned are the abilities of the new Number One to spend Mr Hoyle and Co's money wisely, his little black book bursting with contacts and potential signings all geared towards that Championship status we all desire. As for Rocket Ron, a 'Legend' in his playing days with all the passion for the Club Town fans love. Now like the Manager possessing all the Coaching qualifications, he his here on merit not memories. Both have a task to complete with ups and downs to come but given the support of all they may just surprise the one or two who wanted a different managerial duo. Me - I confess I wanted Arsene Wenger The successful businessman he is Mr Hoyle has many things going for him, not the least his wife and family, but for we Town fans most of all my fellow Heavy Woollener, the love of our Club. He feels the pain of defeat, the joy that winning brings. The feeling only a true fan gets when Dave Cowling nets the promotion clincher against Newport County. Or the inner warmth of the debut of one of our youngsters such as James Berrett. He accepts the pain and desolation of the past year or two, the journey to the Galpharm less energetically taken for as a fan he suffered alike. Indeed our Club had become somewhat stagnant. Something needed to be done, most were powerless. Until April 10th that is and the gloom lifted, the sun came out and Town fans thought they were dreaming awake. But Dean Hoyle is nether a ghost or a figment of our imagination. This time, oh so wonderfully we were not dreaming but it did feel like dreamland. It was indeed all happening. Investment, a new chairman elect, with even more to come at the Centenary Seasons end. So far Town fans have responded magnificently with Season Ticket sales already past last years total and this after just 10 days of trading. Dean is making as much available, including himself, to Town fans as he possibly can for he his one of your own. He wants the same as you and I and will give everything he can to make the dream come true. The Manager and his number two are under no illusions as to what is required and now. Backing of every kind is there for them including financial. Around 9,000 Town fans have also begun the journey with many more hopefully to join helping to make it fortress Galpharm for 2008-09. Together it will happen, the man soon to be Chairman has built his company from nothing to having over 400 outlets UK wide. He is not starting anything like as low as that with Town but he does expect to be at least as successful. To remember a headline in Terrier Talk in the mid 80's. Asked what was required to get Town into the elite again Mick Buxton replied "give me 15,000 Town fans and I'll give you top flight soccer". Never a man to waste words we are already over half way to that figure but with a new special ingredient added Dean Hoyle. The final word goes to the man from Heckmondwike, 'I know I will have arrived, when they ask me to switch on the Heckie lights'. Mr Hoyle thank you for your call, lights have gone on in the hearts of so many Town fans thanks to you in the last few weeks that you could have lit up the whole of Kirklees. YOU + Dean Hoyle = an unbeatable package.
