Huddersfield Town v Sheffield United | Carling Cup 2 |
Galpharm Stadium | 27/08/2008 | 19:45

Following Tuesday evening's defeat of Bradford City Town have been rewarded with a home tie against Championship Sheffield United, a side they recently beat at the Galpharm Stadium 2-1 in Pre-season.

It is the first time Town have progressed past the first stage of the competition since 2005/2006 when they visited Blackburn in the second round before losing out 3-1 where Pawell Abbott scored the Terriers consolation goal.

Sheffield United progressed last night with a 3-1 home victory against League Two Port Vale. Goals from Lee Hendrie, Stephen Quinn and a Danny Webber penalty gave the Blades the win, but they were made to battle hard after Vale had equalised through Luke Rodgers.

Sheffield United started off their Championship season with a 1-0 defeat at Birmingham City. Kevin Philips scoring the only goal deep into second half injury time to leave former Town player and coach Kevin Blackwell's side just above the relegation zone after one match.

They face Queens Park Rangers at Bramall Lane on Saturday and then a trip to the seaside to face Blackpool before their match with Town on week commencing August 25th.

A number of Premiership sides joined the competition in round 2, but those involved in European competition and holders Tottenham Hotspur do not join until the third round.

The second round tie will be the first time the Blades have enjoyed competitive action against Huddersfield Town since the 2000/2001 season when Town won at home and lost at United's ground. It will also be the first tie between the two sides in this competition. The season before Town recorded an impressive double over the South Yorkshire side.

The last cup match (in the FA Cup) was at Leeds Road in January 1989 when the Blades won 1-0. The last Blades victory at Huddersfield was a 2-1 Sunday afternoon victory in September 1995. Jostein Flo and Glynn Hodges scored for the Blades in a 2-1 victory; Town's assistant manager Ronnie Jespon scored the Town goal.

In 95 matches, Town have the upper hand in terms of victories with 37 to the Blades 24. Town have scored 136 goals to 112. In Huddersfield Town have recorded 20 victories from the 47 matches, tasted 11 defeats and there have been 16 draws. Town have scored 68 of the 118 goals at an average of 1.45 per match.

This should be yet another excellent test for Stan Ternent's side and another Yorkshire derby in the competition. After Tuesday night's impressive performance against Bradford City, Town will be hoping that a couple of victories under their belt in the league will ensure that many more Town fans turn out for this fixture than they did on Tuesday night.

There are a couple of intriguing ties in the second round draw including another Lancashire derby for Oldham (they travel to Burnley) and a local derby between Ipswich and Colchester - town's opponents on Saturday.
