Happy Birthday to you ...

Here is the latest topical look back on the history of Huddersfield Town AFC on thisisthebarmyarmy.co.uk

Welcome to next instalment of "Those Were The Days"

'A Those were the Day's / Legends Special'

Our principal aim of Those were the Day's is to provide enjoyment by gently reminding the Town fan of days gone by. Of Days which have provided fond memories for those dark nights when the current result may well have been less than we would have hoped for.

Link those memories to Town stars of the past and you have a recipe for success.

Today we have a rather unique memory which links with a Legend who rather than possessing a good left or right foot indeed comes with four! Two front and two at the back!

A four footed legend who stood barely 18" high but had a terrific bite on them and couldn't half get around the park. Rather than dribble the ball around an opponent this legend was more likely to run straight at them and through their legs with the ball tightly controlled by the nose.

Skippy was the name and the date is Saturday September 27 1969. The venue Leeds Road with the 3pm kick off fast approaching and the Trotters from Bolton Wanderers have come over the Pennines to take on Town in a 2nd Division fixture where the home side had a new secret weapon in their armoury.

'Skippy' was a Yorkshire Terrier who on this day became the new official mascot for Huddersfield Town Football Club. 40 years on and our mascot and the nickname it proudly gave our club, 'The Terriers, still 'lives' on at the top of our official crest and on the lips of Town fans. The original 'Skippy' passed away several years ago and her owner Mrs Fisher also died a few years past

But the cry of 'up the Terriers' and many such can still be heard whenever Town are mentioned and long may our mascot and nickname prosper and grow.

So ... Happy 40th Birthday Huddersfield Town Terriers!
