Here is the latest topical look back on the history of Huddersfield Town AFC on thisisthebarmyarmy.co.ukWelcome to next instalment of "Those Were The Days" (First published on the website April 14, 2006) In this instalment we look back at the finish to the 1967/1968 season Coming from our feature writer David A Wood " The campaign of 1967 had opened with such great hopes, confident that Manager Tom Johnston had a squad that could put in a challenge at the top. With that victory down at Ashton Gate followed by a first home outing success everything had looked rosy. Sadly after this quickly things went in the wrong direction with victories few and far between and when we did put a run together it barely stretched beyond 3 or 4 matches. So the most successful ever FL Cup run was as unexpected as it was marvellous, reaching a Cup Semi-Final in itself is a magnificent achievement but it turned out to be the event, the 7 games of our season. With March bringing our first win of 1968 Town fans were finding the Cup magic now fading as the second division table was viewed from the bottom up. Thankfully the next four weeks following breaking our winless streak brought 4 wins with defeats at Preston & Middlesborough. In the return Easter fixture Town turned the tables on ‘Boro with a 1-0 win. With four matches of the season to go Town would not win another game. Two defeats, two draws, no goals excepting the last match of the season where a 1-3 home defeat at the hands of Blackpool who to their anguish were to miss out on promotion by goal average .6511 against .8611 for QPR who had put three past us just four games previous. The season had just gone away from us, finishing in 14th spot, twenty points from second place but only 7 from relegation. This was by far the worst league finish in Tom Johnston’s managerial rein with us. Hopes had always been high with the craggy pipe smoking Scot in charge. He had brought in many new players, at one stage an entire forward line, signings such as Hellawell, Clarke, Dobson, Hill and others that proved testimony to his ability to not only spot a talent but bring them in for nothing or virtually nothing. The capture of Jimmy Nicholson says it all. Town fans, despite the euphoria of being Cup semi-finalists and the pleasure the run had brought us, still providing treasured memories today, could not help but think, ‘we are as far away as ever’ from the First Division. Though new players had come in, youngsters had been blooded, there had been changes on and off the field, yet we still are not good enough to make that jump. Would we ever be? As Town fans drifted away from that last match of the season those thoughts and more were going through their minds, the Seasiders fans too were disappointed as they realised how close they had come to going up but they also would start next season in the same Division. Yet again we were left wondering what the future would bring. A future though for Huddersfield Town that would be starting not in August but in the last few days of May. These moves were to prove pivotal in the history of our proud club.
