A special edition of the popular "Those Were The Days" articles - looking at Chippenham Town and the FA Cup

Coming from our feature writer David A Wood

"

Normally this is a look back to times special but this article brings us the present and the future, as we look at the F.A.Cup 2nd Round draw, and the possibility of a very, very special tie.

With the utmost respect to possible opponents Worcester City who with "Jock" Morrison in their dug out will be one heck of a team to beat the draw our family all wanted from the competition proper is now a possibility. Chippenham Town.

All my life the Wiltshire countryside has been a second home with names such as Corsham, Bath, Castle Combe, Colerne, Chip and the like meaning so much to me. My father's folks moved to Hawthorn, near Corsham in the 50's and so began a life long love of the area and its people.

Chippenham Town then were not the big non-league club they are becoming today, crowds were counted much more easily than the near capacity 2800+ that attended the Worcester tie but they were as loved by the Bluebirds fans as our Terriers are by us.

Now they are mixing it with the big boys and hoping to win the replay at St George's so they can entertain us Yorkshiremen. Be it Town v Town or City we will be in for a battle and anything less than our best will see us struggle.

One thing you can be certain of, to be there will be telling your grandchildren stuff. Those of you who travel to either of these grounds are in for a Cup-tie like Accrington Stanley, only more. Stanley are a former FL Club, our next Cup opponents aspire to that and mean to do all they can to make it happen.

In front of the BBC cameras the first Sunday in December they will have the best opportunity ever of showing their credentials.

To get to Chip take the M1 come off at Jct 20 follow the Fosse Way. Pass through Moreton, Stow, Cirencester over the M4 & towards the town centre on the A350 (sign posted Poole). At the Esso roundabout having just passed the Golf Club on your right and with Morrisons just over the r/b to the right, head straightforward for Town Centre.

Take next right at the lights go down the road past the school, at the bottom mini roundabout left into Hardenhuish and the ground is on the left next to parkland, Town will be in the School End top of the slope with the main stand on your right and a wonderful 90 minutes awaited.

What particularly pleases me are the comments from both possible opponents who have been most gracious in their comments of our Club. Well they might be can I hear you saying? It does not always happen. I know Mick Buxton and playing non-league opposition could at times get up his nose but officials from both our possible opponents have been high in praise of the "awesome" draw, we have got a "really big club" if we can win the replay. Before then we have some terrific fixtures coming up.

A knock-out 2nd round tie and interest continues to build on the Terriers as we search for success on two platforms. Top of the League and a cup Third Round match to savour, now that would be a 'Christmas Box' to give any Town fan.
